sly_dingo Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 One day I had issues with mods not working. I was told it may be a one drive issue. Unlinked my onedrive, slowly each save file I had disappeared. At first It was one of the three (all of which use one drive, so I didn't see why or how it would be a onedrive issue if the other two were intact), then each login another one. Sims has roughly 1,500 hours logged. I spend months on houses sometimes. 24 hours at the LEAST and hours in CAS getting my OC's exactly how I want. I just purchased shit for this game. To know my hard work, love, and countless months can disappear in a second? It makes me feel less inclined to play the game, which was such a positive outlet for me. I want my save files back, but I'm worried I won't be able to ever have my dozens of houses and literally 100s of sims back. I'm desperate, can anyone help me? It should also be noted I have to log out of onedrive again and unlink it every time I restart or turn off my computer but I'm really not sure what is causing this. I love this game and I really don't want to stop playing over this, but if there is no way to fix the issue I may have to.
Crashdown117 Posted July 11, 2020 Posted July 11, 2020 Okay, first thing's first: Files don't simply disappear (unless your hard drive is broken, which would not affect OneDrive). So keep calm and check your TS4 saves folder - "C:/Users/<YourUsername>/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 4/saves" - if you haven't already done so (and make sure it really is that directory, not the one within OneDrive's folders). If your save files are still there, they may have become corrupted, and if they are gone, you might just have to put them there. In any case, check your OneDrive folders next. Unless they were deleted when you unliked OneDrive (which would be bullshit to do, even by Microsoft standards), your TS4 files are probably still there and can be copied over to the local Documents folder. If you do so, remember to backup your local TS4 folder (copy it to Desktop or another drive), or just move it somewhere else (cut and paste) and replace it entirely. You'll lose all progress since you unlinked OneDrive, but you won't lose your whole Sims world. Â To get rid of the OneDrive issue (having to unlink again after every restart), I'd recommend uninstalling OneDrive and using some software like CCleaner to get rid of leftover files after the uninstall. If you need OneDrive for something else, restart your computer and re-install it.

Never is good let 3rd party apps manage your data, one drive or Dropbox, also if is a SSD drive could be impossible to recover it, SSD are ok for systems but if fails all your data dies in a sec. that’s why is important to make back up of any important data on disc, portable drive, BD etc.  there are professional programs which allow you recover data from damage drives. Maybe could be the last hope.

You can still use OneDrive for backups btw, just don't allow it to access the TS4 folders directly. Since I'm a little paranoid when it comes to this stuff, I have an internal backup (well, I copy the whole folder to another partition every now and then, but that doesn't sound as fancy), and an external backup on a portable hard drive (because I'm out of Dropbox space and don't like OneDrive, otherwise that one would be cloud synced).
sly_dingo Posted July 22, 2020 Author Posted July 22, 2020 @Crashdown117 Question, how do I keep one drive from directly accessing the sims 4 folder? Even if I move or copy the files to the regular sims 4 folder onedrive swipes all the files back, basically forcing me to keep it, and even with task manager stopping what onedrive is doing in the BG it won't let me delete it
Crashdown117 Posted July 22, 2020 Posted July 22, 2020 I think the only way to do this would be by unlinking OneDrive and your local Documents folder - which doesn't really work that well for you, as you stated in the inital post. Thing is, I don't like One Drive. I don't use it and if Windows didn't re-install it again with every major update, there wouldn't even be any traces of OneDrive anywhere on my computer. So the only thing I really know about OneDrive is how to shut it down for good - which is done by unchecking the "launch when computer starts" option in OneDrive's settings btw. However, I also know how to use Google ? and this time I found a different Microsoft help article that looks like it might actually be the one: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/back-up-your-documents-pictures-and-desktop-folders-with-onedrive-d61a7930-a6fb-4b95-b28a-6552e77c3057?ui=en-us&rs=en-us&ad=us Steps to stop folder backup are found below those for setting it up, but they're pretty much identical. Here's hoping it works this time around.
