Kingmusicmanz Posted June 28, 2020 Posted June 28, 2020 Hi there, this is my first post, so please don't be too harsh on me if I miss something. Quick edit here: I am using the most up-to-date version of oldrim, with all DLC installed. My problem is simple, whenever I get close to Winterhold, I crash to desktop. This only happens when I get too close to Winterhold, I've even tried starting a new game where I start out at the college of Winterhold, loaded up just fine, ran around the whole building, then tried to leave across the bridge, and crashed before I made it to the 2nd magelight torch. I've been travelling around to every other hold for almost 20 levels with zero issues, low loadtimes, etc, but, Winterhold specifically is giving me issues. I've tried a few things to fix this, such as: running LOOT to fix my load order, running TES5Edit quick cleaner on any dirty mods that LOOT gave me a warning about (save where LOOT mentioned that the mod maker intended for those ITMs/deleted registers), uninstalled a few more mods, and even ran BOSS because I read it in the forum post "read this before posting", and BOSS told me that LOOT was the better option. Now, I'm here, because I don't want to (for the 4th time since I started this particular modding adventure) slowly disable and re-enable mods until I get rid of the issue. Below, you'll find both my load order as well as my Papyrus log. Speaking of which, in my Papyrus log, it makes a LOT of references to something called "eogeom" and I'm pretty sure that it's what's causing the issue, but the problem is, I have no idea what eogeom is, so if someone else knows, so I can disable that mod, please let me know. Also I have no idea if a papyrus log is supposed to be full to the brim of errors, so if that is not how it's supposed to be (which I suspect is the case) if someone could also maybe let me know what steps I can take to fix that? I'm willing to do pretty much whatever is necessary aside from like, manually editing mods with the creation kit, or merging mods, as I'd rather install less mods than have that many. If I flagrantly missed something that most people should have already done, just tell me what and I'll go do it to the best of my ability. 0 0 Skyrim.esm 1 1 Update.esm 2 2 Dawnguard.esm 3 3 HearthFires.esm 4 4 Dragonborn.esm 5 5 Falskaar.esm 6 6 ApachiiHair.esm 7 7 RaceCompatibility.esm 8 8 ETaC - CTD in the same location is almost always a bad mesh/texture added by a mod. While I could make some wild guesses I don't know half the mods in your load order and I am not aware of one (or more) causing this issue. You should consider which ones are likely to change how things look around Winterhold as your most likely culprits however. These don't necessarily change the looks of buildings either. Impacting the looks of local creatures or NPCs can do this just as well. As a side note, Papyrus logs are usually not useful in determining the cause of a CTD. There is a sound technical reason for this (the log doesn't complete when there is a CTD so what you see comes, in computer time frames, well before the crash).

Right, and I read as much as well, which is what sent me uninstalling some more mods, as well as cleaning everything with TES5Edit, is there any way I can directly see which meshes/textures are screwing up? I'm really just trying to see if there's a better alternative to "disabling mods pseudo-randomly for 4 hours until the problem magically dissapears"

It is why old-timers (like me) warn newcomers that you need to build your load order slowly (as you could see in my blog). Generally it pays to limit yourself to 10 mods added at a time (excluding simple armors since they rarely give a problem).

Ah damn, I figured as much, I been modding for a while myself (pretty much since skyrim hit steam) and I always hated this particular part the most. I'm not usually one to try and join communities like this so I never really was active on any forums, but I decided to come here cos I finally got fed up and hoped beyond hope that someone had a real solution, but if that's not the case, then, well, guess it's time to start disabling! Wish me luck, thanks for the help Psalam.

Semi-quick fix if it works - try to narrow down where the crashes happen by approaching Winterhold from various directions, day and night and any other variable you can think of. be Assuming it is a mesh, we may be wrong, it could be anything - rock, plant, animal, wall, armour, etc. so try to spot something different. As @Psalam has said, this is usually down to a bad mesh so therefore the mod it will not necessarily be in your load order (it may not have a plug-in). Start a new game with a bare-bones set of mods (AS LAL etc) go to Winterhold. Add another 10 mods go to Winterhold and so on.
