Some guy (?) chases me down on sort of hover bike with rockets and even chases me into the casino- lvl 180 or some shit and actually said it's their favorite past time saying shit like "alien" or "modder". Called me out with his buds a few times and I ignored them. He/she actually said something about tracking my ip to see when I log on, Could that be true? I don't give a fuck about mind games- I'm impervious to psyche, lol. I just want to hunt this bitch down cause he/she/it don't know what they're fuckin' with. What really gets me is the chat these asshats have together saying stupid shit like "U hate niggas too bro?" and stuff. Death is not enough. GTA 5 players all seem to think the point of online is to just kill each other for no reason. As a veteran of the MMO genre, GTA online is a piss poor example of an MMO experience. You'd be better off looking to something more traditional, where a sense of community actually means something. All that being said, there's still assholes in every game, and some games have a worse community than others.

I recently tried to play one and was almost immediately getting killed left and right. I don't have a mic and it's hard to type and play at the same time, so I disabled chat so I could focus on getting some experience. Did I goof? Should I at least say "hey" to other players? Is there some unofficial etiquette for playing an MMO that I should read up on? Not distressed btw, just curious. I know the feeling... Just be cool and you'll get along just find with others.

That may also have something to do with the difference in etiquette. I recall many a great days spent on EQ (yep I am one of Everquest players..... I think both WOW and EQ types chose to ignore those five people screaming "but Ultima Online was first!!!"), SWG was early/mid 2000's, it, along with DAoC (that came out a couple of years earlier) filled something of the gap between EQ and EQ2/WoW. Star Wars Galaxies was a fantastic concept with the emphasis on RP but was poorly implemented and balanced. The NGE is not even worth talking about. EverQuest is considered by Most to be the Grand Daddy of MMO's (Although, as you say, Ultima Online and Meridian '59 both came before it) but the Father of the "Modern" MMO (meaning those that followed EQ2 and WoW) is actually DAoC. That's the game that both EQ2 and WoW used as basis for their system, with all classes getting cool down skills. You could argue that SWG also used this but they just forgot the Cool Down and so it was basically a spam attack fest, if you had the buffs (or no armour) I sadly missed out on WoW as I went to EQ2, preferring the lore there. I loved the little teaser fiction that was published before it's release. However, from speaking to friends, it did sound like WoW was just a more complete game, if the sides were a little unbalanced. I recall they hired the Guild Leader of one of the top teir EQ guilds (Furor, from Fires of Heaven) who had been banned from EQ for exploiting a pathing/targetting bug in the Sleeper's Tomb, as their lead raid dev. I doubt we'll see the likes of these games again, for reasons already mentioned. The player base has changed and no one wants to spend half their day in a raid zone now. I guess that's understandable. Althought right now, a game like EQ that could suck 4 or 5 hours of my day would be kinda welcome.
