I have yet to play stellaris, but i am looking for a new game.

Games I like:(and have played)

  1. Age of Empires 2
  2. Rise of Nations
  3. EvE online
  4. Elite Dangerous
  5. 40k universe.
  6. Total war (mostly Rome/medieval)

Movies/books/fandoms:

  1. Issac Asimov- foundation
  2. Warhammer 40k books/table top
  3. Star wars  I appreciate the movies, cant say ive done any reading.. consider myself a fan, but not fanboy.
  4. Star trek  I appreciate the movies, cant say ive done any reading.. consider myself a fan, but not fanboy.
  5. Aliens (Prometheus, et al)

Kind of what Im looking at, or looking for:

  1. Im moving away from fantasy, so im looking at space games...
  2. I dont know how much I like turn based?(im not opposed to it, I play alot of turn based tabletop games).
  3. I look at CiV games, Im okay with the total war concept- take a look at the large map, but can jump down to unit based for war..
  4. Primarily looking for single player.
  5. I absolutely love the openworld/rpg type aspects.  If you lok at age of empires or rise of nations- they are both kind of "one offs"  Ive spent 2-300 hours on single fallout 4 or skyrim toons, but gods help me if i spend more than 2 hours a game in age of empires lol.. even slow rolling thats long..
  6. I cant help but think combat in sid meyerts games looks wonky.  I wouldnt mind the aspect of Total war series, but sometimes I want to give the plan, and just watch how it folds out- without necessarily micromanaging....  (as if you were watching someone play a total war battle)
  7.  I guess I kind of want a big universe to rule.

Games Im looking at right now:

  1. Battle-tech
  2. mechwarrior 5(when it comes out)
  3. Starpoint Gemini
  4. Stellaris
  5. Endless Space 2
  6. X4 (Honestly, I find flying space ships ala Elite Dangerous and x4 too difficult.  Flying like Eve online is fine.)
  7. Star Citizen(but still likely ways out- if it ever comes out)

Any ideas?  or expierence playing the "games im looking at" and how they might relate?   Ive been looking at the youtube videos of all, which is kind of why i think im "Stuck"

Stellaris is an awesome game with goodish mod support (Patches are annoying but it contains useful content that change the game)

but to enjoy it properly you have to have the DLC's for it (and there is no bloody Season Passes(I would like one for this game)

In the workshop on steam for Stellaris, there is a mod called Star Trek New Horizons which is an overhaul based around Star Trek (I didn't play much of it)

but there are other awesome mods for Stellaris that improve the game.

(there is an upcoming major DLC which may be the reason why quite a few mods haven't been updated)

I have Battletech but I haven't played it much

I have the Endless Series but I haven't played it much (I want to but I am playing other things)

Older good games such as Star Wars Empire at War has really good recent mods (including a good Battlestar Galactica mod)

Buy Stellaris and some DLC for it. I have played most games on your list and Stellaris is the grandest and best game of those with lots of depth and it can suck hundreds of hours of playtime. Theres ongoing Steam sale for it still 11h time left to buy but you can pick it cheap other places if you miss it.

Battletech is something i would like to love but it ends up being quite boring. Endless space is just bit too simple. Star citizen is promising but will we ever get complete game out of it, who knows. Mechwarrior 5 is out in week and it looks promising but better wait some reviews first.

If you're looking for a little something to pass the time, I found Planetbase to be a fun distraction.

I see it's on sale for a bit on Steam ATM.

I just grabbed Dawn of Man (same Dev) while checking  :)
