Vuulgar Posted June 10, 2019 Posted June 10, 2019 My current character is level 71 and I have not changed any mods other than updating CBP. I have begun to have a ctd as soon as I hit the ESC key, not on save but as soon as I hit ESC. I need some advice on how to hunt down this bug. I downgraded CBP and went back to the previous save but I still get the crash. It seems to happen anywhere and sometimes, rarely, twice in a row but usually once I log back in I can ESC and save as needed in the same spot so it doesnt seem location related. Thanks for reading.

I will get the logs, I have it off at the moment. My frame rate is locked at 60 with Afterburner and for the most part stays there. My last save is 17.5kb. Mod list is in the spoiler. Strawman Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 I do not have much experience with fallout 4 modding on pc, however I do mod skyrim with over 1000 mods at 60 fps 2k and can give you some general advice based on your load order and save size. I am only including this addendum to inform you that I am not intimately familiar with popular fo4 mods and thus take some of my advice with a grain of salt, by making sure that you read the mod descriptions for each mod. First I recommend to either lock your fps with nvidia profile inspector or if using amd the amd equivalent or with enblocal (nvidia is preferred though), this is due to my testing that these programs keep the fps locked at 60 more consistently and can stop objects from being hurled around a room when you go through a load door, they are nowhere near perfect of course, but they run slightly better than afterburner. Second your save size looks good, at least by skyrim standards which is similar to fo4, thus I doubt there is any save bloat. I assume it is very unlikely your problem is a critical mod conflict, but I still recommend to us fo4 edit to check for errors and conflicting records. One red flag I see in your LO is the amount of live dismemberment where the author explicitly states to use only one plugin but you are using all of the modules. (please read the mod/file descriptions as they can save you hours of headache). After you perform the fixes above and the problem persists, (which it likely will however you should take my general advice posted above anyway) check if it is a problem on earlier saves and by earlier saves I mean lv 50, or even lv 60 saves, you should have been backing up all your savefiles as it can save a ton of headache but if you do not have backups that is fine as well but it may make your problem unfixable especially if it is baked into the save and the file is corrupted. Have you uninstalled any scripted mods or expansive mods ie quest mods which make a ton of record edits mid playthrough? What mod manager are you using (I assume vortex)? Have you sorted your LO with LOOT (I assume you have but sometimes users forget the most simplest things)? Is your f4se up to date? Also make sure to give me those papyrus logs (I need multiple to make an accurate assessment and only give me ones where the game crashes) , in most cases it is useless but in your case it will probably diagnose your problem. Finally, THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT, get and install falhrim save tools on skyrim nexus it works on fallout 4 as well and check your save for unattached instances and undefined elements remove them, if you have either one of these make sure to use falhrim tools to remove the unattached scripts and undefined elements which of course will clean your save game. If the problem persists, go to your oldest backed up save and check if it has any of these as well with falhrim and report back to me if it does. Disregard the end of my post then as EgoBallistic seems to have the solution, if it is game engine then there is pretty much nothing you can do. However you should heed my other advice for your next new game as it will improve the stability of your game overall.
EgoBallistic Posted June 11, 2019 Posted June 11, 2019 I've noticed this too. It seems to only happen if I reload a save without quitting all the way to the main menu first. It never happens on the first game load. I normally never do that - in fact I normally restart the game completely if I need to reload my save. But I've been testing my mods recently so to save time I would save, test, reload, test a different way, reload again, etc, and started seeing this when I would hit ESC to go into MCM. It almost certainly is a game engine issue and not caused by mods.

I did not notice those instructions on Live Dismemberment, using MO2 it installs everything as a regular plain mod, I am shocked I didnt have more issues. I am wondering if I shut all but one off what the effect will be on my save and if I am better off to leave it alone this game and eliminate all but one going forward. I did try some old saves for a bit but even though I had no occurrences it has been such a random seeming event I was not sure. I use Falhrim Tools for save cleaning but usually avoid removing anything generally starting a new game. I am an altoholic. I do use LOOT, I have a default save with a base set of mods that I have tested for a while to be stable, I copy that into a profile folder and add a few mods to flesh out the new character, then LOOT. If I do anything at that point its only add a mod or two as removing usually causes more trouble than restarting. F4SE is one step behind, I wait for everything to update before upgrading and I believe the game just updated lately? But I update all F4SE mods at the same time. I actually dont usually get over 35 or 40 levels before beginning again so I had wondered if it was a game issue that showed the longer I have played, I will pay attention to how I log as I do occasionally just go to the menu but I hadnt noticed a correlation. I really appreciate you taking the time, thank you!

Modding a game to be as you want is the best but even after a few years I often find myself in the dark, thank you for your time here and on your mods.

Do you have the German Game Version? Because Buffout is only for version 162, not for 163 of the game. Maybe you updated Buffout and this causes a CTD? Because i had the same problem after using buffout and its dependency (those two loose files) Greetings, Khajiirah
govnovich Posted November 19, 2021 Posted November 19, 2021 For posterity: I got this problem due to incorrect installation of Buffout. I forgot to add the TBB file to my Fallout 4 root folder
