They gave him crayolas and he started doodling Mr Freeze & Nora, Rick Deckard, Max Rockatansky and Jesus. And Todd was like "oh wow this is brilliant Emil, here take this popsicle" and later decided to make a billion$ game out of it
NymphoElf Posted July 31, 2021 Posted July 31, 2021 Most people seem to have already stated most of the big points here. However, look at it this way: Game development teams may be big, but they will NEVER out-size their fan base. If a game is moddable, the fans willing to put time and effort into personalized content that's sharable with others will be able to dump MILLIONS or BILLIONS of combined work-hours into features, patches, designs, and everything else that the developers couldn't do in their whole lifetime. It's a numbers game, and modders will always have more time to work on stuff by comparison to the developer. That doesn't inherently mean the game is "bad", it just means the modders have expanded upon the developer's "foundation". It's a mutually beneficial relationship. It makes me think that the answer leans more into the side of "mods are just good" but not because they're "better" than the game itself. It simply adds to the experience, no more no less.
JRICH604 Posted August 1, 2021 Posted August 1, 2021 One of the more interesting threads I have come across and really made me think. Thinking about the past experience as a gamer. There is truth to many newer games feeling unfinished and unpolished when released. At first I thought maybe alright now that a dev has the ability to push updates on a whim there is less incentive to spend as much time for QC and testing. Does not have to be that way though as when I think about the best time I ever had in a game with no mods was Zelda ocarina of time for Nintendo 64. That game blew me away and I never ran into any bugs that I was aware of. Not stuck in walls, or unable to progress etc. So I wondered if it was still that way and I asked my friend who has a switch if the new Zelda was any good and what I got was a resounding yes. So I think it really is ultimately the publisher and developer that either have a rep for taking time to release something solid like big N does or you know like beth where the first thing everyone does is look for the Unofficial Patch cause they know its already broken beyond reason lol. ( insert fav "it just works" meme here ) This made me think even more. Taking 2 games I love from different times. Zelda and Skyrim. Comparing the quality and experience of the base game Zelda for me wins hands down. But N is not a fan of their fans changing their game. If a rep from N ever drops by your place and notices your poster of Link it had better be official and licensed lol. So as much as I loved it once I played it through a couple times that was it. Now take skyrim, first character I chose to abandon due to broken game. Had alot of fun but without mods it would have been years since I would have played it. Lost track of how many playthroughs i have done now. Zelda there was no compelling reason to go back. Skyrim I am still finding excuses to go back. With all the talented contributors that have shared their changes skyrim really has become with mods something much more then the dev could ever hope to do and in this case I would agree 100% with NymphoElf For games now and in the future I would hope that the dev would keep modders in mind and when they do it is always better in my experience. I love total war and lately been playing alot of Warhammer2 but if I am honest its only cause when I encounter something I would like changed I think to myself I bet theres a mod already for that and sure enough most times there is. For the few I did not find ill do what I did for skyrim and find a way to make my own changes. So kudos to creative for being supportive that way and I think they realized early on the value it brings to their game and I would not have shelled out for the last few DLC of theirs without being able to play it with mods. Whenever I look to get a new game these days whether or not the dev is supportive to our community plays a huge role in what I end up playing. Its just so important regardless of the type of game from AAA to indie from the value it brings to the game for everyone. So games can be good or bad and do not need mods. When they do have them they can make a bad game good and a good game great so I would say that mods really are that good
beefers Posted August 18, 2021 Posted August 18, 2021 I played the "KOTOR II Restored Content Mod" and it really did help complete the game much better than the original console version. The only other games I play on PC are Sims 3 and 4 and the Wicked Whims mod saved Sims 4 in my opinion as it was VERY underwhelming at release and I immediately went back to Sims 3 which is still a much better game. However, if you like sexy stuff, Sims 4 is better and easier to run.

Though Sims3 had a better mod with more options. I can say that Sims 4 can be fun with the additional mod (can't say pm please).
