shardoom Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 Does anyone know of a free program that can view/edit the .dds files that Skyrim SE uses? Also I'm having trouble with the meshes too. I created a bunch of body meshes using BS, but when I go to open them with Nifskope (2.0) it doesn't display them properly. There's no actual 'body' just a bunch of nifskope lines. Nothing I'm used to doing for regular old Skyrim modding seems to be the same...

Assuming that DDS is equal to the LE version, these two programs should be fine: https://www.xnview.com/en/ https://www.getpaint.net To which you can also add Photoshop or Gimp 39 minutes ago, shardoom said: Also I'm having trouble with the meshes too. A couple of screens of the steps performed with BS and Nifscope will certainly help to correct any errors

(otherwise I wouldn't have had any issue. I modded Le for years) Paint.net was always my goto program. Gimp won't do it either and PS isn't free...
spoonsinger Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 I use Paint.net for SSE dds files , (whichever format that is). rename them with .dds2 as the extention before loading into paint.net. Then rename them back to .dds once you finished fiddling. Ackward but free, (also I like Paint.net anyway over gimp). Edit Sheepish forgetfulness - You also need this :- https://forums.getpaint.net/topic/111731-dds-filetype-plus-2019-02-07/?tab=comments

I managed to get Nifskope to work somewhat like I remember (I had to uninstall the older version completely, then the newer one looked VERY different) Although that still refuses to load the meshes assigned textures... Why did Bethesda have to make it so hard to view the textures? I thought they liked people modding their games! >.<
rafael666 Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 Gimp has a DDS plugin (you may have to search for it on their plugins/addons page). https://www.gimp.org/downloads/ It is also IMO the best "free" full service graphics program available. It's multi-platform but originally a Linux beast, so it may be a bit of a learning curve if you are a long time PC user. Bethesda wasn't trying to make it difficult to read/use graphic files. The DDS is a popular graphics format for games. The main advantage is that the DDS graphic format files require less memory. That can make your game run faster and smoother. A win right?
myuhinny Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 Because they like making it harder to mod their games. I know for fallout 4 some texture files load into paint-net and gimp2 while others don't and loading those ones into Xnconvert allowed me to convert them but it messes up the texture file. I like gimp2 more as it has a awesome lasso tool paint-net is nice for it's ability to be able to load multiple files and allow you to take something from one and place it into a different one.

I KNOW about the awesomeness of .dds! The point is that Bethesda CHANGED their .dds usage from LE to SE... I've been modding Beth games for about a decade, so I've opened roughly eleventy five fucking TRILLION .dds files... BUT, the .dds files in Skyrim SE are FUCKING DIFFERENT, hence my question... O.o
rafael666 Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 Sorry! Give Gimp 2 a try and see if that helps.

flatliner10 Posted February 16, 2019 Posted February 16, 2019 The gimp DDS plugin does not support the new BC7 Format, but Compressionator allows you to convert BC7 compressed files into uncompressed ARGB, and vice versa, i use it to make Normal-maps smaller without Quality-loss to speak of, just DON'T use it for BC1/BC3 compressed files, might mess up the tint/color. However these formats should be supported by the Gimp plugin without converting them beforehand.
