Trouble with transparency

Hi everyone,

I've decided to make some parts of clothes semi-transparent, and found then followed a setp-by-step guide on how to do it.

When opening the Nifs if need to modify, I've notices the Alpha channel was already created (perfect!).

Fast forward to the photoshop part : I have the plugin to open .DDS files, and I save it back using DTX5 format.

Problem : the transparency is all or nothing! <50% grey leaves 100% opacity and >50% grey makes it 0% opacity once rendered in-game or through bodyslide (faster than launching game).

Any idea on what's causing it / how to make it progressive again?

EDIT : SOLUTION HAS BEEN FOUND, HERE IS THE TL;DR ANSWER :

delete and manually re-attach the NIAlphaproperty on the .Nifs you want to edit. Transparency will work again.

Thumbs up to Myuthinny who provided the answer!

Take a look in Alpha Properties.

Enable Blending and Testing, or in short 4845. For start use 30 or. 40  for test values.

Current is set to 4844 (flags) with 128 (bytes) threshold (was already set up on the mesh by mod author.), I'll try the values you gave me.

EDIT : tried flag 4845 and 30 bytes threshold, exact same result, all or nothing.

Aim was to give slight transparency overall because wearing "rags" that are as thick as coats makes no sense. But I can live without it too.

Outfit studios many times transparencies will not appear in it. It's just the way it is unless the transparency is pretty high sometimes it's hard to see a transparency and can't be seen unless you turn off and on the body while close to the part that has transparency. Sometimes having NiAlphaProperty attached to the piece can cause it to not appear right in outfit studios other times it doesn't affect it.

This outfit has transparency but doesn't appear in outfit studios except for the spots where the textures are completely gone.

Also if you edit a texture file while outfit studios is open you'll need to close it and reopen it and reload a file so that the changes will appear otherwise the edits might not appear till you do.

Yeah, I know that modifying currently opened files will usually mess things up. Rebooting is key.

However I've tested in-game too, and result is the same, all or nothing. I know i'm touching the right texture since the modification shows up, the problem is granularity.

I guess I'll try to find a different tutorial, wait a few days and try again when I've cooled down. Repeating the same processes again and again to try and see what could be wrong is draining.

In the worst case, I'll just skip it, adding 10-15% transparency is nothing I can't live without. I came here with my troubles in search of a quick fix (might be an oversight or something dumb like ticking a box somewhere for all I know), but if there isn't, anyone reading this don't spend hours on that for me.

I just thought of something that I have seen before but forgot about. Did the nif parts already have a NiAlphaProperty added to them? If so get rid of them as there is shit in them that is preventing it from working right. If they already had a NiAlphaProperty then delete them out using block - remove branch then paste a new NiAlphaProperty for the piece with node - attach property - NiAlphaProperty.

I remember before hitting some items that transparency wouldn't work with them right and it was either all or nothing I think but once I tried deleting out the old ones and adding new ones then transparency started working correctly for the parts.

Seems like the typical "hi, it's me ya boy the bug" you expect the least. The items indeed already have the properties attached.

Thx, i'll try that!

EDIT : that actually worked! Thumbs up to you!
