What are templates good for when creating custom characters and is it safe to change or remove them from characters that use them from the base game and dlcs?

It can be removed but you will lose any data that was used from the base actor and you will need to add it to the npc directly.

So it's useful when your making many characters and just don't want to take the time to customize them all? I kinda dislike the cookie cutter approach of it. I had a character I was editing and I couldn't get them to use spells until I removed the template flags. Might be useful for copying some custom characters with special abilities or whatever. Haven't played around with it yet to see.

Take a look at the template you were using and see if that was set up to use spells it may not have been.

Dawnguard template- so no. I probably should edit the template since I have mods making vampires much more dangerous.

Depending on which mod it is they may well have their own templates, in which case you could use those templates.
