AngelPhoenix69 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 As the title says, how is it possible that steam can update FO4 when I have it set as only update when I launch, and update when I am not online? As an added bonus, how can it update when I have set all but my script extender to read only? It makes no since. The last update made it so I could not play anymore. Just to play again, I had to delete everything. Now comes another worthless cc crap that I will never buy or even want.
dibz666 Posted July 25, 2018 Posted July 25, 2018 Steam keeps a log of ur actions when using it offline or on. They do it to everyone to get info on how people use steam. It's just like xbox live or playstation plus & just as greedy... There is basically no stopping it but u can work around it. When u launch Fallout through steam it keeps track of that & when u next go online in steam it will launch updates for ur most played games. If u REALLY want steam to not update ur games u should back them up. Mack a copy of ur fallout 4 folder. Then when ever u get steam saying u need anupdate just let it do it's thing. When it's done updating u just overwrite it with ur backup steam doesn't even notice. But u MUST back it up again. EVERY time u launch steam in online mode it will check ur games to make sure they're up to date & this won't work with online games.
AWP3RATOR Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 I just keep copies of the Fallout4.exe from each version. When the game updates, I roll back to the previous version for a few days until the mods I use have been updated to work with the new F4SE.... not really an issue.

I use the script extender launcher :), I have a backup copy of the last update, even though it is unstable, I can still play. @Awp3rator. yea I hear you and dibs, from now on I will keep a backup copy
code chufima Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 You can set Steam to only update a program when you run it instead of automatically updating it. If you're modding Fallout 4, you're likely using F4SE and starting the game through that. If you're running the game through F4SE instead of Steam, the update won't trigger. At least it shouldn't, anyway. Bethesda can be... insistent with updates.
ssddsquare Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 It's no use, sooner or later you would need to update it as mods would require a certain version of f4se, and the f4se would require the game to be updated.

Only when you are addicted to f4se-depending mod updates and an abundant supply of new f4se mods not to lose interest in the game. And besides, f4se gets updated as reaction to a game update, not vice versa...

Plus, I usually just switch to other games while F4SE gets updated after a Fallout 4 Steam update.
EdinMG Posted August 6, 2018 Posted August 6, 2018 I use the "Only update this game when I launch it" and never had any problems with it, in fact I updated my game to 1.10.106 yesterday, I was waiting for the last 2 mods to get updated, DEF UI and CCCleaner. Normally I wait for at least 10 days before updating the game to the lastest version, and again, never had any problems.

I do the same - after many unsuccessful other methods. I have nothing against updates - but I have something against updates without a change log and basically something against updates that bypass the read-only protection of files.
AngelPhoenix69 Posted August 7, 2018 Author Posted August 7, 2018 Thank you for all of the replies :). I do have a question, should I be launching through Nexus instead of my SE launcher? This is how steam got me two updates ago. Also what would happen to my save file if I do have to launch through Nexus?
