cleavagesweat Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 Is anyone here using Windows Enterprise 2016 LTSB? I just got it installed and WOW it's so awesome. No bloat from Windows 10. You can't even install MS Edge on this OS ... like at all even if you wanted to. so you're stuck with IE 11 or using firefox, chrome etc.. this OS is stripped!
Intrigued Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 What programs can it run? I use Parallels myself, on OSX 10.10 with replaced kexts. From this, I use Windows 7 for most 'needs' (Fallout 3/NV with 'expansions'), legacy apps that still have support in Win7 unlike Win10 and such, I use Windows 10 solely to run Forza Horizon (which is stable as bedrock in Eastern Europe, but stutters occasionally) and the latest version of Solid Edge (alas, we must keep pace with the times), and I occasionally even use the fancy OSX GUI - I honestly can't comprehend how people can prefer this over classic Windows (not Win 10, for fuck's sake), even knowing about the original philosophy of the system and being a user since the times of Snow Leopard - to watch Youtube videos. I'm eyeing Zorin OS, since those guys claim Windows programs run faster on Wine under Zoris than natively in Windows, claiming their system is so well-written. While that may be plausible, I'm not a fan of Wine. But (but) Wine could have made serious advances in those years I haven't used it - progress which Win 10 has also made. In any case, I'm keen on looking deeper into it one day. Does anyone have more experience with less-ubiquitous operating systems?
cleavagesweat Posted July 22, 2018 Author Posted July 22, 2018 it can run anything. Microsoft just has restrictions on LTSB because its more for organization that cannot have bloatware interfering with the environment (i.e. hospitals etc...) where they and need a stripped down version of an OS to just do what its suppose to do with crap like cortana fucking shit up. its a VLA purchase via CDW. its "supposed" to be only for biz but I think its a gray area.

However, could the lack of "feature updates" not brick applications in the long run? Let's say a game updates, and the update anticipates a Windows feature update - you'd then have to apply these Windows updates yourself, manually. How does it work?
Ernest Lemmingway Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 Argh! This is exactly what I wanted when I bought my desktop three years ago. Well, if it is available for private use I'll keep it in mind if/when I do buy a new PC. Oh, and there's a way to disable Cortana in the registry. It doesn't get rid of it but it does stop its functionality. I'm not sure if it affects how many system resources are used since I haven't run any comparisons.

Cortana still runs even after you mess with the registry - it's the new name for the search and indexing routine. Notice how it eats 100% of your hard drive reading rate each time you start the system. It will just get rid of the smartypants asking you questions on the frontside, effectively being the 2016+ version of murdering Clippy.
unded Posted July 22, 2018 Posted July 22, 2018 Get Enterprise or Education and strip it down from there. Or wait for the new LTSB that if i'm not mistaken it might get here soon.
