Just curious how other people play their game, ya know? Did you decide to play as Nate or Nora, and why? What's your characters stats? His combat style? What's your characters alignment, and the justification for said alignments?  Do you base the characters decisions based off your feelings, or try to roleplay how the person you created would react? Or do you just create skimpily dressed characters with no backstory or real character (not judging... it's your decision to play your game any way you want.)

It should go without saying this is a discussion about your head-canon Soul Survivor... "the (wo)man out of time", if you're playing with an alternate start mod and are just being some random merc, that's fine, but I'm more interested in how the Sole Survivor reshapes the Commonwealth in your games.

For me, my Sole Survivor is Nate; my head-canon justification is that it felt more natural for Nora to take Shaun... maternal instinct and all that, as well as the fact that Nate's an ex-soldier, and equipped for the game, whereas Nora's either a law graduate or a lawyer. (In NV, I'd have totally played a charismatic character, but it's not like Fallout 4 is full of dialogue options.)

His starting stats are- S:5 P:7 E:6 C:4 I:4 A:7 L:7 with "You're SPECIAL!" going toward Strength, making it 6; he's an all around soldier, well versed in combat, and a marksman popping off critical shots left and right. I'll be honest, I cheated and gave my character 40 SPECIAL points like NV, but my justification was that he's a decorated and skilled soldier, so in my head he's had "intense training" to make him an overall above average character right off the bat.

His opinion of the institute was poisoned from the beginning with them... you know, killing his wife and stealing his only child, and while he was a bit strunned learning about Shaun, he came to the realization that the Institute truly was evil (Honestly, I was torn between the thought that in practice, they're not as big of a threat to the Commonwealth as raiders/mutants/B.O.S. while wanting to finish the Main Story... but not with them.)
He fights for the people, so the Minutemen (even though I hate the radiant quests) was the faction he decided to fight for... while he does believe that synths are deserving of freedom, he feels like the RailRoad is to narrow-minded and would forsake humanity for synths. He soon found that the B.O.S. was little more than a group of glorified raiders with better weapons, and any benefit they brought to the Commonwealth was an afterthought of their "crusade".

My characters kind of a generic "good guy", but in my head I was justifying it as what would have been the most likely canon play-through, while you can be a bad guy (NW) it doesn't feel like the vibe the game pushed to me.

The default start is pretty terrible, railroads the player into a huge number of things from an RP standpoint and just generally shouldn't have been done.  Still, the concept of a cryogenicly frozen sole survivor in a vault is a good one, but it's one gem of an idea buried in a shitpile of a story.

That said, it's as good a jumping off point as any for a first delve with no other goals in mind, so for my first Vaultie, I took it.

My Nora (hereafter referred to as her chosen name, Victoria) followed pretty much all the main story beats - law school graduate, recent mother, happily married, etc.  I built a little more onto it, though.  She'd had a fascination for guns for a long time, part of what attracted her to Nate, but between Nate's military experience being a downer for him and her parents pushing her into law as a career path with more opportunities than gun, she reluctantly set that interest aside.  She was also the one that had to convince Nate to get Codsworth, tied to another interest of hers; robotics.  She was a wild child in college, too.  Racy clothes, several boyfriends (some at the same time) but settled down quite a bit after meeting Nate.  Something in him settled her, and not through his own doing.

Then all hell broke loose.  Nukes dropped, she watched her husband get capped and her baby get stolen, and then she was alone in a familiar yet alien world in a vault suit that was way too tight.  If it weren't for Codsworth being around, she might've lost her mind.  Having one sane anchor to her past keeps her grounded and has helped her adapt to her new reality.

Sans the socio-economic state from before, she found room for her interests to thrive.  Good thing too, since it turned out guns were really important now.  Equally convenient was the fact Nate had given her some "off-the-record" power armor training while they were dating.

Not much else to tell.  She has a platonic thing with Nick; she avoids faction allegiance because acting as a free agent makes everything easier but does have a loose understanding with the Minutemen, whom she assists as an adviser to their Sanctuary settlement; and she really, really wants to put a bullet into every Institute member she can get her hands on.
