Into the depth: 2D to 3D (Stereo VR)

Venturing into the depth (pun intended) of my favorite photos I realized they would look so much better in 3D. So I went on and wrote a bunch of python scripts to compute the depth and create a stereo side-by-side version of my pictures.

I choose to use my own AI creation to illustrate the infinite possibilities, but it works even better with real world pictures. I tried it on video game screenshots and even cartoon characters and it was surprisingly good. I was even more amazed when I realized it works with movies too.

Tell me what you think and if you have a favorite picture or short movie you want to turn into 3D, just drop me a PM.

There are 2 pictures per set:

  • One is to be seen in stereo on a flat screen. Not everybody can manage that, but it works. This is how I do it: I look as far as I can, pretending the screen is not there, the mouse on the "unzoom" button and then I press the "unzoom" button until the two images meet.
  • The second image is to be seen with a VR headset in VR180 mode. It's the tiny picture with the big black frame. You will need a viewer like Skybox to enjoy it. It is of course more impressive and immersive.

First is a Swedish AI girl named Freyya:
