She would make a worthy Dragonborn, go there fetch that, bring me this, deliver that. Very, very Dragon born like. ;)

So aside from wet dreams, what core competences does Arngjar actually have? Can't fight, can's cast spells, has no clue about the wilds. What the heck did he do for a living to start with?

He's a mage....who knows how to fight, but he's a bit of a coward at the moment.
At the moment he has a gift....the gift of pissing off Princess Ayrana and alienating her.
But later on, things will probably work out for him.

Yeah, but here is the question. Given he offers nothing, keeps complaining and pisses her of at every turn, why does she still allow him to tag along? Yes, she can be magnanimous at times, but this makes no sense. Why weight yourself and your groups down with someone you've no interest in or business with and that you aren't required to keep around for one reason or another? Anyone who isn't a very odd kind of masochist would tell him something like "we will go south, you may go west, east or north". ^^
