James Bond, Agent of ... Mephala?
I've been reading about Mephala, and I think she gets some shitty quests in the games. I mean look at some of the things encompassed by her sphere of interest:
- Assassination
- Seduction
- Diplomacy
- Veiled Threats
- Espionage
- Blackmail
Is there anything that 007 ever did of which Mephala would not have approved? I'm having difficulty thinking what it might be.
So why isn't there more glamour in the world of Mephala? She's the patron of every femme fatale and every charming sociopath you ever read about[1]. Remember the film Dangerous Liaisons? Glenn Close and John Malkovitch would be instantly at home at any gathering of Mephala cultists. How about Kill Bill? Murder, sex, secrets and betrayal in every second. Pure Mephala.
But what do we get? Whispering Doors and pointless betrayals. Dreary and sordid and pointless.
Personally, I blame the Dunmer. They have a long history with the cult and marked tendency to be Miserable Gits. In Vvardenfell they couldn't even set up a daedric assassination cult without wrapping it in a legislative framework and making sure everyone filed the necessary paperwork.
Somewhere along the line people started thinking that this was how Mephala had to be: staid, miserable and boring. I don't think that's the case at all.
I think Mephala is overdue for a makeover.
I get too many ideas every to realise all of them, but I can imagine a mod called something like "Sex and Lies and Mephala". One that tried to add some style and some fun, some sexiness for Gods' sake, back into the Webspinner's worship.
Because I really think she's far more interesting than anything we've seen so far.
[1] With the possible exception of Steve Jobs who clearly sold his soul to Hermeaus Mora. Obviously.
