James Bond, Agent of ... Mephala?

I've been reading about Mephala, and I think she gets some shitty quests in the games. I mean look at some of the things encompassed by her sphere of interest:

  • Assassination
  • Seduction
  • Diplomacy
  • Veiled Threats
  • Espionage
  • Blackmail

Is there anything that 007 ever did of which Mephala would not have approved? I'm having difficulty thinking what it might be.

So why isn't there more glamour in the world of Mephala? She's the patron of every femme fatale and every charming sociopath you ever read about[1]. Remember the film Dangerous Liaisons? Glenn Close and John Malkovitch would be instantly at home at any gathering of Mephala cultists. How about Kill Bill? Murder, sex, secrets and betrayal in every second. Pure Mephala.

But what do we get? Whispering Doors and pointless betrayals. Dreary and sordid and pointless.

Personally, I blame the Dunmer. They have a long history with the cult and marked tendency to be Miserable Gits. In Vvardenfell they couldn't even set up a daedric assassination cult without wrapping it in a legislative framework and making sure everyone filed the necessary paperwork.

Somewhere along the line people started thinking that this was how Mephala had to be: staid, miserable and boring. I don't think that's the case at all.

I think Mephala is overdue for a makeover.

I get too many ideas every to realise all of them, but I can imagine a mod called something like "Sex and Lies and Mephala". One that tried to add some style and some fun, some sexiness for Gods' sake, back into the Webspinner's worship.

Because I really think she's far more interesting than anything we've seen so far.

[1] With the possible exception of Steve Jobs who clearly sold his soul to Hermeaus Mora. Obviously.

With Mephala and Loverslab it would probably turn out to be more James Bondage than James Bond, but I like where you seem to be going with this.

Also when will we get a chance to see your current mod, pretty vacant, in action ourselves?

Well, there is that I suppose. Sometimes I need to write an idea down to get it out of my head :)

Soonish. I have almost all the scripting I need done, which is good. There's a tricky bit of rotational geometry still to sort out, and then a smallish pile of dialogue and a radiant quest and we'd be ready for a release.

Luckily, I've completely stopped thinking about Mephala and will be able to concentrate on Pretty, Vacant :)

Yes of course.

You have nice decorative spider by the way, got to say it goes well with just about any topic like murder, or conspiracies, and betrayal all of which do not fit into any sort of mold for any non existing mod.

p.s. it really is a nice spider, key hole could be a bit better if I am honest but obviously just a first draft that you may or may not at one time return to.

enjoy doing whatever you want to it's your time after all!

keyhole... that is an old school sands of time clock.... black widow style.

Need a complete re-write of the civil war quest....

Make it so that at the end, you kill the one you were supposedly working for (with the ebony blade). Then you walk out into the city and tell the army you were working with that "Your commander is dead, you've lost. Now throw down your weapons or die like your leader"

If they don't surrender, you get to go ape shit with the ebony blade on an army and each kill increases the blades lethality, because they were once your comrades.

Deception, Lies, Murder, more Murder.... Hell make it so even if they surrender you still kill them.... Long Live Injustice!

Edit - now that I think about it that sounds like how the one group from "Game of Thrones/Thornes" what ever its called got wiped out.... banquit of poisoned wine and then the army was slaughtered by there supposed friends.... hmmm Mephala would have been pleased with that show.

Yeah. The slight asymmetry is deliberate. I wanted to try and get a suggestion of female curves into it. I'm not sure it works particularly well though. Still, at the scale I'd be using this (I was going to make a forehead tattoo) it wouldn't really matter either way,

And I'm not really about to start work on this as a mod. I have an image in my head for a movie poster or two which I might make, but beyond that I don't have a plot. So currently it's just an idea, albeit one I might fool around with for a little while.

Yeah. I don't know if they have black widows in Tamriel, but Mephala would certainly have wanted one as her emblem :)

That's the thing that's eating at me though. Mephala is one of the "good" daedra. Now I know that we're talking about "good" from a Dunmer perspective, but you can't have a stable society based on worship of a deity who only cares about betrayal and wants everyone to murder their best friends. There's got to be more to it than that.

The Red Wedding. Yeah, Mephala would be delighted with that piece of work. And Game of Thrones in general.

I suppose I'd just like to explore the less-dark side of her worship.

Just found your blog... seems like I "just find" a lot of things on LL that I "should have been following" months ago.

Gonna have to read up on Mephala, and why "good daedra" is applicable.  Might just be because he/she/it (do pronouns apply to any of the daedra, really?) doesn't look to screw you over or generally promise pain and suffering to mortals in general (similar to Azura and Merida, two others I like). Clavicus... well you know what you're getting into, or should.

The other daedric quests are also kinda MEH compared to the game.  There are side quests longer and more involved than most of theirs. For the mentioned Vile... clear 2 dungeons and you're done.

Are longer player made daedric quest mods something I've missed, or are there just not so many out there? I'd love a thieves guild like quest chain for Mephala... just taking on the role of Karliah. Setting up of the family houses in the big cities against another, seducing and robbing a daughter/son (like Alain and Nilsine Shattershield).

I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but as I understand it the Dunmer (Chimer at the time - this was before the War of the First Council) the Chimer split from the Altmer over religious differences. The Altmer worshipped the Aedra and Chimer the Daedra.

The Chimer lost the argument and ended up fleeing to Morrowind. The "good deadra" were the ones who taught them the skills they needed to survive. Boethia taught them courage and ferocity, Mephala treachery and diplomacy and Azura ... I'm not sure what Azura taught them, to be honest. Anyway, when the Dunmer say good it means more "on our side" than "moral and upstanding" and is generally used to distinguish them from the not-so-good daedra like Sheogorath and Molag Bal

I haven't seen a lot of Daedric quest mods, to be honest. I'd love to do one with Young Mephalians. I have a cast and a scenario and probably an ending... I'm just a bit fuzzy yet on the bit in the middle. Although it is starting to get clearer.
