Downsampling with DSR - window problem

This is about keeping the ALT+TAB function of Skyrim intact which normally hangs up the game with default settings.

Now when you downsample with nvidia's DSR, you can use the two ENBlocal options called ForceBorderless(Fullscreen)=true.

Problem is that the actual downsampling of the image doesn't work properly, making small fonts like in the console and ENB GUI entirely illegible.

In the past i disabled the ForceBorderless settings in ENB, and instead switched to windowed mode in skyrimprefs.ini (bFull Screen=0).

This was working just fine including 5 days ago, but today i launch the game and Skyrim shows as a regular 3840x2160 window on a 1920x1080 desktop. Meaning that i only get to see the top left quarter.

Any idea why this is suddenly happening?

I did update my nvidia drivers and fixed the settings BEFORE my last Skyrim session, so this was 100% working in this exact configuration. And i don't see anything in the driver or game settings that would prevent it.

I don't know why the fuck you want to use 4k dsr and downsample to HD but you can simply change your desktop resolution to 3840 if you activated dsr and then play Aldrin windowed borderless.

I remember you asking a question about what was the optimal AA a while back...

are you using DSR and AA?

What in the fuck for?

Also check your GPU scaling settings, they probably reset.

Because then he can say "oh look I play 4k" xd don't mind that he knows what AA is used for..

Well the display scaling was indeed reset to "display", switching to "GPU" didn't fix it though. Normally you only need to change this if you run f.e. older games that don't support your native monitor res and use a wrong aspect ratio. This won't change anything if you run 2160p on a 1080p monitor since the dimensions are exactly twice the size.

And as i said, this was working fine when i last ran Skyrim 5 days ago. Haven't touched any settings in that time.

Changing the desktop resolution is a workaround, as mentioned it works with native desktop size using the ENB tweak, and also used to work fine with Skyrim windowed mode instead.

And i would appreciate if you would keep your assumptions about my person to yourself, thank you.

As to why and how, the DSR is required to make decent screenshots. Downsampled pics always look 10x better than any AA and Sharpen methods can do. I mean besides that viewers can zoom in with up to 100% on a 1080p display.

And of course this is a goddamn slideshow with something between 5 and 20fps, nobody would play a game like this.

Some shots in 2160p - this degree of quality is wasted to post here in the screenshot threads.

But you can actually click on the pics, press F11 for fullscreen browser, and use the magnifying glass to see the actual 1:1 size. Holding down middle mousebutton lets you further pan the image.

Hopefully the pics explain why you want to use DSR combined with all kinds of ENB / SMAA effects. And you also need to Alt+Tab during screenshot sessions so you can examine the pics and make required adjustments that you can't see in game.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I guess the picture will only be bigger in size and I don't mean file size.. Also, even if you take 16k screenshots, the pixels will be lost if you resize the picture or don't have the monitor to view it?

Why don't you use Photoshop to edit the screens afterwards?

The algorithms used in browsers (or GPU drivers or whatever does that) to dynamically downscale pics are extremely good. So if you keep the pics in original size, it looks perfectly sharp on everyone's screen no matter what size they have.

I have a very nice 27" 1080p monitor myself, gotta admit the advantages of downscaling meet their limits if you see the picture embedded in the narrow forum. But in fullscreen it beats any original 1080p renders any time. The supersampling/downscaling will also prevent other artifacts from the graphics engine, like glitches from DoF and such.

You can reduce the pics to 1080p before uploading, but users with 1440p won't like it and on 2160p it's tiny like a postcard.

The filesize is larger, but the 2160p JPEGs still look better than 1080p BMPs. And the difference in filesize can be huge, from 32MB original BMP down to 2-6MB for JPEG with quality 98-100.

Cropping the pics for better image composition is always a good idea, but as far as i'm concerned, directly photoshopping (retouching) the pics is taboo.

I get 60 locked at native 4096x 2160, and use my own ENB that hits harder than K does because of using the Cook-Torrance lighting model, difference being I don't use AA.

If the issue still persists I would drop a PM to Manuel G at Guru3d or the nVidia home forums.

But enbs aa doesn't apply to corners and stuff, it only blurrs a lot, temporal aa is nice for screenshots but gives ghosting if moved
