Content Consumer Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 I have a few suggestions... For magic, here's a short list: Apocalypse Magic is my main go-to mod for magic. There are some other good ones out there that add spell variety too, such as Midas Magic (different theme, and may require some third-party updates at this point), but Apocalypse is my favorite. More Apocalypse is a little expansion pack on that too, with some other good spells. If you're looking for something a bit simpler, something that just enhances destruction capability, Tox Destruction Scaling is a good one, I used to use it a lot. Or there's Fortify Destruction Damage, but if you're going that route I suggest Summermyst instead. Elemental Destruction Magic is one I use alongside Apocalypse Magic, it adds earth, air, and water spells that mimic vanilla fire, shock, and frost magic. Great for more variety, and like Apocalypse the spells have unique effects so you aren't just using a retextured vanilla spell. While not exactly spells, Thunderchild is a good one for dragonborn characters in search of new shouts. And while I'm here I might as well plug Aurora Standing Stones too. Some individual spells or spell effects I also use include Dead Thrall on Anything Level 100, which does exactly what it says on the tin; Better Runes, for longer range casting and being able to set more traps; Magelight Multi-Cast is a must if you're using some mod that makes things darker; Banish Light if you're playing a stealthy mage character; Sun Rune is a good one for restoration mages - note that some mod I have adds another one, I don't think it's Apocalypse, but I'm not certain. There are a bunch more on the Nexus and other places too. And what use is some nifty spells without the spells looking good? I've always felt that Frost Atronachs are too large. They don't fit through many doorways, and make very big targets for enemy spellcasters and archers. Smaller Frost Atronachs rectify this problem. Deadly Spell Impacts make your misses a whole lot more immersive. Burn Freeze Shock effects is another good one for some extra effects, a little buggy at times but nothing ever game-breaking. Electrify makes lightning magic look better, and Transparent and Refracting Ice does the same for some frost spells and frost atronachs. Deadly Ice is another good mod that makes frost spells look better. Rune Magic HD is the best rune spell retexture in my opinion, and it covers Apocalypse and Elemental Destruction Magic mods. Enchantments are next. Summermyst (or the older version Wintermyst) are good ones for weapon and armor enchantments. Staffbuffs is a good one if you use staves. In the looks department, Animated Weapon Enchants is a must-have if you're a battlemage-type. And finally, the outfits. I'm assuming we're talking about female characters here, particularly since there aren't very many male outfits out there comparatively speaking. There are roughly ten billion mods out there that add some decent-looking mage-type clothes, robes, and armor - here are some that I have used. Opulent Outfits is probably the best, in my opinion. To be honest, I'm not sure which version is the right one any more... Mage Robes HDT is an excellent mod that takes over from minidresses. If you're going for some sort of theme mage, Black Mage Armor is a good one for darker mages, White Mage Robes for lighter ones. Temptress of Ice and Temptress of Flame are good for ice/fire themes. Temptress of Flame is particularly good if you're making some sort of human/flame atronach hybrid. There is a metric fuck-ton of mods out there that target each of these categories, though. It might be tedious, but I recommend spending the time to look through the entire Nexus database for good ones. Otherwise, do a google search for "hidden gems magic" or "best magic mods" and you'll probably come up with lots more.
orgs1n Posted June 26, 2017 Posted June 26, 2017 Less well known than Apocalypse, Lost Grimoire of Skyrim still contains a few spells that I consider essential. Its readme lists them all so you can decide for yourself if the spells fit your playstyle. Why should my thief start with a knowledge of magic? Or if he/she does, why a brutish killer like Flames and not a subtle illusion from Apocalypse or Lost Grimoire? Spell Choice has you covered. Less broad in scope than either Apocalyse or Lost Grimoire, Psijic Teleport Spells fills the niche of magical transport in a more immersive way than any other mod. So small that they don't even use up an .esp slot, Smart Souls and Transmute Iron Ore First yet save a lot of time and frustration. (These should have been in the base game.) Finally, when you've tried all these spells and have outgrown them or just don't like them, rid your spellbook of them with Spell Eraser.

It basically does a full rebalance of the vanilla system and is compatibel with almost all mods. If you go for Summermyst, you might as well just grab the older brother Wintermyst too.

It tweaks Novice/ Apprentice/ Adept/ Expert/ Master [school of the Magic] perks (that was garbage in vanilla Skyrim compared with some crafting perks) to strengthen the maximum of each magic school's level scaling [max. 100%]. Not only PC's Destruction, but also the Alteration Spells should be greatly benefactors of this scaling effect. Alternatively, Awakened Magicka introduces the more elaborated scaling effect not only to PC, but also to NPCs. As for new spells mod, I end up in adding only one spell mod, Lore Friendly Spells And, are you not satisfied with your spells compared with the ferocity of hostile magic users? Not bad though, I'll get an open slot in my loadorder No problem, though to be honest when I first installed opulent outfits, my first though was damn these are ugly robes, textures looked great but the robes themselves, bleh ugly as fuck, then did a bit of digging and found my current clothing/armour replacer uses its own mesh/texture paths rather than the vanilla ones, and the opulent outfits use the vanilla meshes path and just add extra textures to it. So it was dig around to find robe replacers that used vanilla paths and had uunp bodyslide files for it, which is where I found the second robe mods which I said just deactivate the esp as I just wanted the meshes to be there. Though to be honest, I think the art of magic really need somebody who knows what the hell they are doing with nifs/alternate textures to go through the whole thing and re-do it all, taking into account the way some of the stuff in nif files have changed over the past few years, value changing or being replaced, and sorting out the slot usage for the robes, which from my own look through it are in some cases all over the place. Though if I could find a good picture and text guide to alternate texture sets in the ck, I would have a go myself.
