Today at QuakeCon 2011 in Dallas, TX, Bethesda lifted the lid on the Collector’s Edition of the highly-anticipated Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The CE, which will be available on PC, PS3, and 360 on the same date as the standard edition (11.11.11), will contain the following:

Alduin Statue: Created in conjunction with the IP Factory, this collector’s only statue stands 12” tall and is made of high quality PVC. Modeled from actual in-game 3D digital files, it showcases Alduin, the World Eater. He stands perched atop one the game’s many dragon walls that teach the player the lethal language of dragons.

‘The Art of Skyrim’ Official Art Book: Featuring over 200 pages of striking, full-color illustrations, sketches and models, this stunning 9 3/8” x 12 1/8” coffee table book showcases the characters, creatures, environments, and weaponry of Skyrim. With a foreword by game director Todd Howard and commentary from Bethesda Game Studios artists, readers will be guided through the game’s iconic visual style.

‘The Making of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ DVD: This documentary DVD contains exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage, including interviews with the Bethesda Game Studios team as they take you from concept to creation and provide insights into the story, gameplay, setting, legacy of the Elder Scrolls franchise, and much more.

The Collector’s Edition will be available through pre-order and will retail for $149.99 (US), €149.99 (Europe), £129.99 (UK), and A$199.99 (Australia). So, who plans on picking this up?!?!?

Pricey, but i'm a complete sucker for an artbook, escpecially for the Elder Scrolls. Hopefully it will have a couple of scantily clad dunmer girls in it. Took me a second glance to even notice the statue I was so focused on the 'book. Couldn't care less about the DVD.

Thoughts? Personally i'm trying to figure out whether such a bare-bones (as awesome as the artbook is) Collecto's Edition is a sign of confidence on Bethesda's part of apathy.

I would be outraged at the price, if The Old Republic hadn't beaten them to this price. Chances are good that this will be the going standard from this point on for Collector's Editions with statues, if it wasn't already, since I have never really bought one like this before.

That is pretty epic, but I still prefer Skyrims artbook and statue. =P

Survival gear is a fun novelty and gets the feel of of the game across, but its not the same as a statue and an artbook of high-quality fantasy art. Nor does a worn t-shirt appreciate in value unless you are famous. It's also, I imagine, that Dead Island as hopeful as I am that its going to be good isn't as big as titles like Skyrim. Being honest i'm not sure i'd want most of that stuff. The bag, the t-shirt, and the glowsticks sure. Shame they arn't offering it elsewhere since I would get it.

Well all I cay say about Skyrim for now that it will fail..

even CE sucks :P

And the price...if they put 150 euro that will be like 600zl... for statue artbook and game... I think Bethesda should look at The Witcher 2 CE...

Oh, I agree its stupidly overpriced (£100 for a book and statue) but its too early to say it will fail. Infact i'd safely predict that unless the economy dies forfore its released it will be a massive financial success and the console players will nom it right up. Mindless fans like me are even paying them an extra hundred for a book and statue. :P

Looking back I just did a check. Oblivion's CE was no better, though it will have been cheaper, and used is going for £30 on amazon. It had a Septim coin and a 'Pocket Guide to the Empire'. Not sure what Morrowind ahd exactly; but from a picture i've found it had a small resin figure about two-inches tall, a art-bookt he same size and quality of the manual, and a soundtrack. Basically it just looks like Bethesda are crap at Collector's Editions. Not new for Skyrim. Infact, it is pretty much Morrowind's CE on steriods, and puts Oblivions to shame. Way overpriced though. I could go on about starving orphans; but in reality i'd just waste the money on something anyway, so might aswell be art and a shelf-piece.

I'm at a loss to explain why Skyrim is getting so much negetive feedback before its even released. A few things have disapointed me sure; but other things have made me hopeful. It's like Morrowing to Oblivion again, but at least people had the grace to find out Oblivion was released broken and buggy first.

Since then modders have done much more with Oblivion, just look at Lovers and Deadly Reflex and such, than was ever managed with Morrowind. I'm hoping it will be the same with Skyrim. I'm not trying to be a fanboy, i've been stung by Dragon Age 2 and thats made me somewhat more wary of sequals, but almost everything i've seen of what Skyrim is going to offer has made me want the game 'naow'. Most of the annoyances will be fixed by modders, just like for Oblivion, and for Morrowind too.

Nope.

I saw this last night and i remain unenthusiastic. The art book would be nice to have but the making of specials never do anything for me and unless the dragon statue is 14 karrot gold or hand crafted by a master it just isn't worth the money. Further i hate to be cynical but look up the withcher IIs collectors edition, it puts Skyrim to shame.

So my plan is to preorder and look for the art book on ebay later.

I'm at a loss to explain why Skyrim is getting so much negetive feedback before its even released.

I've said this a few times already' date=' but:

* I'm a PC gamer.

* I like a little food for thought with my gratuitous mayhem.

* I like lots of stats to minimax.

Bethseda's games from Morrowind to FO3 have tended to trend away from those things I like. The games have been increasingly console centric; They've been increasingly dumbed down, and the system increasing "streamlined".

My problem is that all the PR coming out of Bethseda suggest that this trend is going to continue with Skyrim. Which leaves me a little sceptical about the game.

I can't really fault them for focussing on the potentially more lucrative console market. They do risk alienating a chunk of their core user base - the guys who've been playing since Morrowind and earlier because they liked all the stuff that Beth have lately been trying to get rid of. Then again, from a business perspective, that's probably a reasonable gamble. I won't criticise them for trying to expand their market share.

On the other hand, I don't want to reward them for making a game I don't want to play, either. And all the available evidence, both from Beth's recent games and from Skyrim PR, suggests that this is a strong possibility. So I'm going to wait and see. If that seems irrational, so be it, but it's probably no worse than deciding ahead of time that it's going to be worth buying.

A few things have disappointed me sure; but other things have made me hopeful. It's like Morrowind to Oblivion again

Well, yes, that's what Beth are saying, but frankly, I've seen nothing that suggests any similarity with Morrowind. The "shout" system maybe. Apart from that, we have another generic European setting, with standard fantasy elements. I rather suspect they said "we're going to make it more like Morrowind" because they know a lot of the Morrowind fans have been disappointed with the direction of recent Bethsoft outings, and they're hoping this will be enough to make them buy the game. I suspect they may be fibbing, in short.

... but at least people had the grace to find out Oblivion was released broken and buggy first.

Like I say' date=' I'm sceptical. I'm going to wait and see if this is broken or not. But I think I'm allowed to say I'm going to wait and see, and I don't think I'm required to pre-order the game, just to show I'm not pre-judging it.

Most of the annoyances will be fixed by modders, just like for Oblivion, and for Morrowind too.

Entirely possible. But definitely not an argument for buying the game early. If anything it argues for picking the thing up from the bargain bins 18 months to two years after its released, when the modders have had a chance to fix these shortcomings.

Bottom line: I'm going to see what the damn thing is like after the hype dies down, and then I'm going to decide.

I'd be more inclined to get used to it mate. The only companies that are still PC centric are Valve and as well as CD Projekt (given rumblings of the Witcher 2 being on Xbox360 makes me worried). All others are focusing on the consoles these days.

On the flip side, that does give the companies a bit more incentive on the PC by having different features on it, such as Crysis 2's HD pack for PCs or DA2's DX11 patch. However, this is pretty token in that all it does is make it more pretty. How about a few new missions only for the PC like Fable 3 had? Or something that is PC-only?

On the other hand' date=' I don't want to reward them for making a game I don't want to play, either. You must remember that Bethesda has moved beyond what gamers believe is the scope of the Elder Scrolls really. On one hand, you need to satisfy (to a reasonable degree) the fans of the series (whatever platform they choose to play on) and yet still draw in the newcomers into a setting they could easily be familiar with. That's what PR is for. Obviously, opinions and as well as other factors will make that negative or positive in either way.

I usually have a healthy dose of scepticism in regards that it'll be awesome etc etc. I let the screens do the talking as a picture is literally worth more words that you can juggle.

And you can still vote with your wallet if you're so inclined.

Like I say' date=' I'm sceptical. I'm going to wait and see if this is broken or not. But I think I'm allowed to say I'm going to wait and see, and I don't think I'm required to pre-order the game, just to show I'm not pre-judging it.

To be honest, you can't say that with complete confidence. Every software HAS to have some bugs. No company is ever free from that. But I do agree in the wait-and-see approach. That way, you can judge from a different viewpoint. I've been too used to solving software bugs so it becomes normal anyway.

I passed on the collector's edition but did preorder a regular edition. The statue and artbook are nice but for the price I feel like it should have more. Halo Reach was a similar price and had tons of stuff with it. As others have mentioned the Witcher 2 CE was also a good example. Same with the Fallout New Vegas CE.

I am however excited about Skyrim. I am a bit worried that the dragons may turn into an annoyance on the scale of the Oblivion gates but I'll live with it. I am also happy that the way scaled leveling works sounds like it'll be closer to F03/FONV than Oblivion. That's a huge plus for me.

Fallout New Vegas CE wasn't that great really as I have it and apart from the All Roads comic book, there wasn't much after that.

I think there was. The deck of cards, the platinum chip, the other poker chips...

Which didn't really reflect the extra price increase compared to the normal version. Heck, I would have expected more than that.

Well' date=' that... or maybe find something better to do with my time. Or maybe just give up on the big name studios and spend my money on indie games. Or maybe finish finish one of the half dozen free software projects I've got going.

However you slice it, I can't see the point in financially encouraging a company to do something I don't enjoy, just because they once did something I did enjoy.

Well, yes I agree. On the other hand ... so what? I'm not saying "Bethseda is Bad". I just think I'm going to need some information that doesn't come from a corporate spin doctor before I decide whether or not to part with my money.

That's what PR is for. Obviously' date=' opinions and as well as other factors will make that negative or positive in either way.

[/quote']

My problem with PR happens when a game studio knows they have a problem with the software and decide to fix it in PR. So they take the defects and present them as major strides forward in gaming enjoyment. And by the time we all realise we've been had, they've already got our money.

That's why I get worried when I hear Beth telling how it's a good thing that they got rid of all those dreadfully, dreadfully complicated attributes and multi-piece armours and so forth. My feeling is "pull the other one...", you know?

Like I say' date=' I'm sceptical. I'm going to wait and see if this is broken or not. But I think I'm allowed to say I'm going to wait and see, and I don't think I'm required to pre-order the game, just to show I'm not pre-judging it.

Hmmm... I don't mean "broken" in the sense of "buggy". I meant "broken" in very personal sense of "deeply and fundamentally unsuited to my tastes and preferences". And that's a judgement I think I can make based on emerging online consensus.

Hmmm, Though I will agree that the collector's edition for Skyrim is pricey compared to other CE's, I'm only buy a CE for two reasons.

1. What's the big item there trying to sell me.

2. What other goodies am I getting.

The Witcher one looks cool because of all the stuff you get, but I'm not going crazy about the bust.

Skyrim's may not have as much stuff, but the dragon piece looks cool and would fit my room with all my medieval equipment and statues.

There was one collector's edition though I wanted to buy so bad, and that was Catherine's set.

What other CE gives you underwear. :D

Wow, just wow. I live in Poland too, so I know how high this price really is. This deserves fail of the year award :D Good thing I wasn't going to buy CE anyway, just standard version.

Err, Han, that's still cheaper than what we Aussies have to pay for our CE. AUD $250 compared to roughly AUD $200 to you. >>

EDIT: And compared to the Witcher 2 CE which is $200 AUD compared to $80 AUD to you. :(
