DeltaD36 Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 Skyrim still suffers from a nasty bug that was still present since oblivion. If you notice your game crashes allot' date=' do not mistake this as just crashing to desktop it should give you an error at the end. First switch to 3rd person so you can see yourself, use the tilde key ~ and click on yourself and type kill. I know it sounds strange this will force the game load your last game and clear left over memory issues. Since oblivion they are very poor to clear memory. And this workaround fixes anything still leftover from you loading your save game. [/quote'] Is that so? o_0 I'll try that, than. Thank you!
DeltaD36 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 So I've come across something rather interesting... and I'm not sure if it applys to the crashes... >> I have started crashing again, and I still haven't figured out why, though I am uninstalling mods I'm not using or suspecting are causing it. Anyways, to get on with it. I was headed near a known CTD spot for a test. This CTD spot seems to be a line connecting to a stream that starts off from the side of Whiterun, far behind the Honningbrew Meadery. I chose to jump over the stream on the side of Whiterun and... I was suddenly told that I was carrying to much... which is impossible. o_o I've done this test many, many times and I remember that my weight was 295 out of 300. When I was told I was carrying to much, I checked my carry weight, and it was suddenly 357/300! I derped and thought I probably did something, so I put Bandolier items on to put my carry weight to 357/400. I took about 3 more steps before I slowed down again. The message popped up saying I'm carrying to much. I checked the carry weight and I was at 1257/400!!! But that's NOT the best part! I decided to check my inventory for what would be doing it. What I found was a little freakin' weird... What I found was Barrels...Barrels and random items such as Treasure Chests (like the ones at the end of dungeons or near world walls), Cabbages, (and no, not normal cabbages, I'd drop it and it would become a single cabbage... with the ground attached) and tons of other items I had not checked out before I decided to quit out of the game. Unfortunatly, I did not take a screenshot when I should have. But it certainly makes me think of what the hell might be going on with the crashes. Just a theory: The place I picked up all this crap from no where was in a known line of CTD. I'm guessing that CTD is not caused by a random error all the time, but just an over abundance of stuff getting put in your inventory at once. Possibly a LOT more than 1257 carry weights worth. There's no real way to know because you usually crash without knowing why. It's at least a start. Again, just a theory. Maybe someone else can shed light on it? I'll try to get a screenshot if I can. Note: I've also nailed down that it is NOT the Drow mod causing crashes.
DeltaD36 Posted July 9, 2012 Author Posted July 9, 2012 Entering Markarth's Palace causes an instant crash no matter what I do. I'm not really sure what would conflict with this... I've tried this with the official patch, I've tried it WITHOUT the patch. I've already ruled Drow out, but now I'm not to sure. What if one of the companions is in there?
HanPL Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 Keep in mind that Skyrim 1.6 makes many mods unstable (even when they are updated to work with 1.6 version lol ) If you get CTD in certain places check if any of the mods you have overrite/overhaul the location if yes then disable them and check if problem occurs. (Good way to check it is to make new save game write tmm 1 (shows all location ) and got there with "fresh " character/savegame since often after new patches saves get corupted and CTD. If there is no CTD with new character then it's corrupted savegame. If problem occurs then it's caused by mods or in worst case corupted core files.
DeltaD36 Posted July 10, 2012 Author Posted July 10, 2012 My Moonshadow Elf is a fairly recent chracter and it doesn't crash with her. And it's honestly over on Whiterun with my other chracters.
Firedoom Posted July 10, 2012 Posted July 10, 2012 DeltaD36, sorry if you already answered this. Are you running Skyrim in Windows XP by any chance?
DeltaD36 Posted July 11, 2012 Author Posted July 11, 2012 DeltaD36' date=' sorry if you already answered this. Are you running Skyrim in Windows XP by any chance? [/quote'] I am not. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. Speaking of making a new character; if I don't crash as my new chracters, does that mean my old characters are fucked? :/
HanPL Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 Well maybe not "fucked " but corrupted for sure. Like I said sometimes if you have older mods adjusted for let's say patch 1.5 and then patch 1.6 is applied "old " savegame gets corrupted (since mods are not compatible ) Starting new character usually solves this problem.
The DarkSlayer Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 I've been having CTD issues lately. I think it's time for me to make a new save game, haven't even finish the main quest line yet lol .
Firedoom Posted July 11, 2012 Posted July 11, 2012 DeltaD36' date=' sorry if you already answered this. Are you running Skyrim in Windows XP by any chance? [/quote'] I am not. I'm running Windows 7 64 bit. Speaking of making a new character; if I don't crash as my new chracters, does that mean my old characters are fucked? :/ It could be as simple as an item you are holding. Try dumping all your possessions into a safe box and see if that seems to help. If not, use the console "~" and then click on yourself to get yourself targeted by the console. Execute the command, "removeallitems". You might lose some invisible tokens that are essential for certain mods to work correctly, so you may have to deactivate mods, save, reactivate mods and see. Hope this helps. If it's a buggy script clinging to the character it's possible that the mod deactivation/reactivation could clear it, but then again maybe not. Good luck and Godspeed.
DeltaD36 Posted July 12, 2012 Author Posted July 12, 2012 I've already done all that. As far as I know, I've stopped crashing while approching places. But just as old problems vanish... I've run into NEW problems! HOORAY!! =_= Here's what I've got: Upon making a new chracter, I tend to crash ever time I switch the gender to female. It's as simple as that. I can't change my NEW made chracters, to replace the OLD chracters, to female. And it's starting to piss me off.. Now My recently made Male chracter, when I was making him 2 days ago, I was able to make a female chracter, and was positive I could do it today. Unfortunatly, this is not the case. Anyone have any ideas?
Firedoom Posted July 13, 2012 Posted July 13, 2012 I'm assuming it doesn't matter what race you are? What immediately comes to mind is a problem with your body replacer (assuming you use one) or perhaps a custom skeleton. Could also be any number of things related to character creation, like hair mods, face parts and such... If your mod list has changed you should probably re-post that.

They take a lot of GPU's memory and if you overdo it, loading a female with all the hair files at once (up to hundreds of MB) crashes the game.
GMan2 Posted August 4, 2012 Posted August 4, 2012 If you're still crashing, try disabling VSync within either your GPU's control panel, or there is an .ini edit you can add. (Though I do it with both methods) Now with VSync disabled your FPS might shoot WAYYYY UP....thus creating tearing and physic collision issues. So grab FPS Limiter from the Nexus and configure it to what works best for you. Once I disabled VSync MANY of my CTD's went entirely away. Some nights I can get in HOURS of play before I freeze/crash. And generally, I believe those freeze/crashes are due to bad coding within the game itself and nothing related to my PC or mods I use.

They take a lot of GPU's memory and if you overdo it, loading a female with all the hair files at once (up to hundreds of MB) crashes the game. This is correct. The guy who made the "Hair Packs of Oblivion" mod, for example, recommends using "Textures Optimizer" (currently hidden, apparently... no idea why) to crunch down hair textures to something more manageable. I can definitely recommend it! Also - if you're using any "Presets" mods, I have found it is helpful to put these at the TOP of your .esp load order (no, I have no idea why - it just works). If it's STILL giving you trouble, try *TEMPORARILY* switching to LOW settings, in the smallest 4:3 windowed mode you can get, to switch the slider across. Hit "R", name, save, quit, re-set to whatever setting you were using before, open the game again & play. You can use "showracemenu" to play with the other sliders later once you get into Helgen keep. I do this on my laptop to start a new game. It can still take a couple of tries, but it does work.
