Mephisto_VI Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Not sure what has changed now, but after using OSGM (Oblivion Save Game Manager) and loading a save made with a prior installation, I now cannot play Oblivion. I load a save, any save, and it will load up, go through initializing scripts, and then most of the time the last thing displayed on screen is "Failure to register callbacks" from LoversRaper (not 100% sure thats the exact name though, but its the closest I can remember) and it freezes completely. I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del and kill Oblivion.exe with the taskmanager (shown as not responding). I have already deleted the oblivion.ini from the My Games/Oblivion folder and run the launcher to create a new one. I have not added or removed any mods since the last time it worked. The only change was to use a save that was made from my previous installation which suffered from the save-crash bug (and this save was from well before that started happening). One more thing that is odd. Now Oblivion's memory usage is extraordinary upon initial load. It used to be below 1GB ram used upon loading, but since this started happening its now nearly 1.5GB used immediately. Watching memory usage while playing, Oblivion typically crashes after 2GB used before this happened.
gregathit Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 The saved game could be corrupted. There also could be missing esm/esp/bsa/meshes/sounds/textures/ or something else that is different from the last install to this one. It is best to simply start a new game so you don't inherit any issues from the last install and start with a clean slate. As to the memory usage. There are to many variables for me to point anything. I am not at all familiar with OSGM so I can't say whether it works or doesn't.
Mephisto_VI Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 I hope its not save game corruption. If it was, I would then have NO saves at all anymore. Going to try a new game (yet again) and see if that provides any clues. I think OSGM is part of the problem, if not the whole cause. Any recommendations for profile management? I occasionally play different characters and liked OSGM's ability to separate the saves per character. Doesn't Wrye bash have something like that?
Mephisto_VI Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 UPDATE: OSGM has indeed corrupted my saves. Any way to salvage them? Wrye Bash's remove bloat/repair (a/f)bomb counter options don't do much for me, never have, so I don't put much stock into using it to try to salvage my saves.
gregathit Posted July 3, 2012 Posted July 3, 2012 Once it is corrupted it (a saved game) generally is non salvageable. I don't know that there is any save game manager that I would trust. The best way (at least to avoid any corruption anyway) would be just to create a couple of saved game folders and swap the names as you change characters.
merctime Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 I seem to have a fair time with Wryebash's profile system... I just make more than one bashed patch and name them "Bashed Patch, 0", "Bashed Patch, 1", "Bashed Patch, 2", etc etc... and have one per character that way. This naming convention also ensures that BOSS reads and sorts them properly, and this is the sole reason I don't name them "Bashed Patch, (character name here)" by the way. I have 7 profiles used currently, and just assign a bashed patch and set of mods for each one. This way each bashed patch is only set for one profile/character. Then, I just move to the 'saves' tab, right click it, and choose the profile I want to swap to if I want to play a different character. Been doing that for some time now, and having no real problems. Just make sure, that each bashed patch is only assigned to one profile!
Mephisto_VI Posted July 7, 2012 Author Posted July 7, 2012 When I next play, I'll try using Wrye Bash. Not sure if I'll need multiple bash patches though. I almost always (98 out of 100 times) use the same mods across the board. Thanks for telling me about that Merctime
