Pie chart showing the proportion of lurkers, contributors and creators. 1% rule (Internet culture) In Internet culture, the 1% rule or the 90–9–1 principle (sometimes also presented as 89:10:1 ratio)reflects a hypothesis that more people will lurk in a virtual community than will participate. Unlike the common forums around the world, lots of Chinese forums require members to reply to see the hidden text ...yes, including the Moderteam, with which many LL member is familiar. Why? Because the authors don't want to feel lonely, so they force the viewers to reply to their post, however what they will get in the end are only meaningless replies. I don't like to do such a thing, however I am quite curious about how many replies per view of a post I will get if I don't hide anything? So I started to do this "research", it turned out that: The replies I got per view of a post on LL: 1.65%, on Moderteam: 2.81%. For me that's good enough. I also calculated some other people's value of replies per per view of a post: 0.27%, 1.09%, 0.80%, and it seems the more the viewers of an article, the less the value (especially when the amount of viewer is big). So there might be an invisible magic barrier that no one can get more than 4%? ------------ Don't take this research too serious, It's just for fun.

Although I have a question, what exactly is a "contributor" in the pie chart? Is it just someone that posts or does something more? Wait' date=' so how do I calculate replies per view?[/quote']The numbers are visible in the board. Write the replies and views as a ratio, replies on top, then convert to a percentage.

Simply divide the sum of replies by the sum of views, then times 100, then you get the the average replies per view in percentage. You can trim of the extreme data to get a better result.

Most of the time I lurk (Dunno if it's about 90%).
