Kendo 2 Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 The subject line says it all. I've looked at various forums on-line and others are having similar issues, but no one has answers. Sims 4 is the only game or process being affected like this. I can run Witcher3 and my CPU usage is stable at about 60%. Bethesda games like Skyrim and Fallout New Vegas run at about 43%, and that's on maximum settings and both games are heavily modded. For Sims 4, after the Toddler update was released I did the usual preventive measures; removed the folder at C:\Users\MyName\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 4. I moved the Sims 4 folder to my desktop, started the game so it would make a new folder, get the game updated, etc. Then I added my saves, Tray and Mods back and played the game. Everything worked fine for about four days and then my game suddenly crashed to BIOS without a warning or any error messages. Now Sims 4 clocks my CPU at close to 80% when sitting idle and near 100% if I try to actually play the game. Before the BIOS crash Sims 4 ran about the same as my other games. My Intel CPU core is running at 3.01 Ghz (the maximum I can get with a dual core). I have a 120GB of free disk space and my Physical Memory never tops 45%. I have almost all background processes disabled out of habit. With 8 GB of RAM and a GTX 550Ti graphics card that is more than enough machine to run Sims 4. As I stated the game was fine until the Toddler update. I haven't installed any new software (other than the Sims 4 update), nor have I downloaded or installed anything else. Anyone know what's going on and how to fix it?
TURBODRIVER Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 The only thing I could recommend you checking is if you're running the game in 64-bit. You can do that in properties of The Sims 4 in Origin. I would assume you already did that, but just in case. I don't actually believe that would fix it though. Tomorrow there should be an update to the game, around 10 AM PST / 7 PM CET that maybe will fix your problem.

At first I thought it was a hardware issue or maybe a memory leak from a virus. I'm using the current service pack for Windows 7 so that's not it. The virus scan was clean. I reinstalled the video drivers and that didn't fix it. I've also done all of the tricks with both Origin and the game to keep Origin running in the background to a minimum. Nothing works. Origin runs at about 90k (which is just ridiculous) and the associated QtWebEngineProcesses siphon off another 70k total. That's 160k just for Origin to run and then Sims 4 takes over a million k when running. I've never seen anything like it. I tried both Sims 4 launchers (the base one and the 64bit) and the game still taxes my CPU usage at about 80%. That's with the game paused and me not rotating the camera or doing anything. As soon as I click on the play button it goes up to 100%. I hope the update tomorrow fixes this because I have all of the packs and dlcs and that stuff wasn't cheap.
camerenwood Posted January 23, 2017 Posted January 23, 2017 Can you post your computer's specs please? Operating system, bit version of windows, RAM, etc. A few suggestions: 1. Clear out cache files 2. If running WIndows 10, disable cortana along with other unnecessary apps 3. A cool thing you can do with windows is add an SD card or USB and use ready boost as an alternative method of extra memory. You'll lose that port unfortunately because the device will have to permanently stay in to work but it has worked for me. I'm running a 64-bit version of windows 10 on an old laptop coupled with an opolar external cooling fan 8G of RAM and I'm able to run most games at Ultra settings no problem. CPU stays stable throughout gameplay. Hope that helps!

Computer Brand: Dell XPS 630i Processor: Intel® Core2Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00 Ghz (But it runs at 3.01) RAM: 8.00 GB OS: 64bit Windows7 Home Premium Graphics Card: GTX 550Ti That's more than enough to run Sims 4 and it was fine until the Toddler update. EA did something because now I'm losing memory like crazy and I haven't installed or downloaded anything else.
Kendo 2 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Funny thing. I cleared all the caches and ran command prompt to flush the dns. Now Origin is updating again...probably to sabotage what I just unknowingly fixed.
TURBODRIVER Posted January 24, 2017 Posted January 24, 2017 Sorry, there was no update after all. I hope you will figure this out somehow, good luck!
Kendo 2 Posted January 24, 2017 Author Posted January 24, 2017 Sorry, there was no update after all. I hope you will figure this out somehow, good luck! I've uninstalled Origin, all Origin games and everything associated with them. Now I'm reinstalling one thing at a time. What I'm afraid of is all of my previous saves and Tray files were contaminated by the Toddler update. It happened once before when Get Together was released and the game updated. I lost all of my Sims and Lots since anything I installed from my community library would make the game crash. I guess that's the price for using mods, even when no modding content info is in the Tray files. I'll post the results of my total reinstall here just in case someone else runs into the CPU usage problem I had.
Kendo 2 Posted January 25, 2017 Author Posted January 25, 2017 Sorry, there was no update after all. I hope you will figure this out somehow, good luck! I think I figured out what is going on. It is the same situation as what happened with Sims 3. EA's recommended specs for the game will handle the base game and a few world packs but the more you add the more problems you'll have if your system isn't above and beyond what they recommend. The more official packs you add and the more EA updates, the more memory gets leaked. That explains why only Sims 4 is being affected and my other games still run fine. Poser also runs fine and it is the most memory intensive program I use. I added 4GB more memory and the game is somewhat stable now. I also booted from the Windows7 disk and did a memory test and a disk scan. All of my hard ware is fine. I have the feeling Sims 4 is going to play out like Sims 3 did; can't run all of the packs at once without a rig that can handle the memory leaks. Players will have to pick and choose what packs they want to use.

I even was making a memory leak tests like two days ago to make sure my mod is safe and everything was fine too. Your setup has to be really specific to have issues like that.
Kendo 2 Posted January 25, 2017 Author Posted January 25, 2017 The setup doesn't have to be specific to have the memory leak problem. It is a known issue, as I have come to find out after it happened to me.

What I did was I went into my Power Options and changed the Balance Power Advanced Options and changed the Max CPU Processor State or Power Output to 90% so far I haven't seen the Sims 4 go past 60% after I did that or at least I didn't see it go past that and interestingly enough the game actually ran a little better

Kendo 2 Posted January 25, 2017 Author Posted January 25, 2017 @bemis67 That didn't make an appreciable difference in the Sims 4 CPU usage. *has a sad*
