Game stuck or CTD on loading saved games, but can load saves after starting new game

I fixed the issue, but wanted to share...

 

My mod list is long and heavy on the scripting... The game is completely stable while playing, but always seemed to have issues loading. I would either have to start a new game, then load up a save, or make sure I save in a very small cell.

 

Every single CTD or hang, I looked at the Papyrus log and could not find anything that caused them.

 

In my skyrim.ini, i changed fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0 to 1000.00

 

The game started to load in bigger cells, but still failed in big cities and skyrim. I kept upping that timer and finally have it loading saves correctly the first time in every city. My final setting, able to load in Solitude with 20 NPCs around me was:

 

fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=2500.0

 

This is on an i7-7700K running at 4.8GHz, 32G mem, AMD R9 390X video, and an SSD for storage. Depending on your system, you may need to turn it up even higher.

 

Hopefully this helps anyone else experiencing similar issues. I dealt with starting a new game and loading saves to get around these stalls and CTDs for far too long and I'm so happy this sorted it out.

I have the same problem sometimes. I've reduced the amount of CTDs somewhat by turning up the time it takes for script mods to update in their MCM menus. I still get crashes on load if I play on one character for a long time, but it's not as bad as it used to be.

The reason why the game has trouble loading when you are running a ton of scripts and script heavy mods is because when you load the save every single solitary script in your game tries to load it's ass up at the same time. Which can cause lag freezes crashes and what not on load time. The reason why it works fine on new saves is because there are not as many active scripts in the save file yet.

 

One trick I use is to start the game and when you get to the load/new game screen open the console screen by hitting the ~ key and typing in COC qasmoke this will warp you to the games testinghall. From there bring up the load screen and try to load the save you are trying to load and it should load up fine unless you have some serious problems in the save file. There is also save cleaners that you could try and see if they can clean up the save file but it doesn't always work.

While what you say is absolutely true, I got around all off the coc qasmoke/starting a new game/etc. by simply changing that one line in my ini. Now it loads straight from the game menu every time without fail.

There's a mod called Continue game No Crash that automates that process into 1 step.  He has a bunch of other cool utilities as well.

I have not had a single instance where the game crashed while loading a save since installing this and I used to get crashes from having too many animations (according to crash fixes).

this happens when i'm trying to load a save with Captured Dreams and Deviously Cursed Loot mods installed, but when i remove them and load a save before installation of these mods, the save loads normally, pls help.
