Guest Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Howdy folks, I've been playing my game for quite a while, after doing a clean install for the fourth time and I really got into settlement building (all the various settlement mods helped me out). I've been trying to build as realistic settlements as I could with a lore friendly purpose for my own enjoyment, but I thought maybe other people would also enjoy seeing these types of builds (I'm planning to do more). So I decided to do a video on one of my settlements. Red Rocket Station, the Logistical, Internal Affairs and Processing Camp. You are free to give me feedback on what I should or should not do while building or maintaining this settlement. I appreciate everything, after all, inspiration comes from somewhere! Also, I would like to see what y'all got built up, a show-your-settlement of some sorts! Have a good day y'all!
Snazzishoez Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Really good job. It's pretty cool how much you fit into that station and still it wasn't totally cluttered. There is space to move around. I was especially impressed with how you made a room around the outdoor station with it's four squared off beams. You floored and walled it very nicely. You covered everything. That cat walk was a nice touch. It looks like you used the snap and build walls for your outside barrier. I didn't see any major gaps, which can be annoying. Extremely lore friendly for those who are hardcore about that. I've never seen the graves before. It really bothered me to see bodies laying about in settlements where your comrades had fallen. The example that comes to mind is the castle. I don't think more than once or twice I was able to go in and clear it out with everyone alive at the end. Maybe once. Graves would have been perfect. I'm pretty sure there are mods that zap bodies lying about. It would still be nice to place graves to honor the fallen. Now, either you have a mod or I've been totally oblivious to the feature that shows your establishments and their purpose. That is a really nice touch. I've messed around with settlements and setting them up, but it takes so long that I feel more like a carpenter than an adventurer, minuteman, or whatever. You mentioned though that you set up places, like the warwick farm so that you don't have to set up each area with everything. That's a roleplay aspect right? How would that work for distribution? I love the idea of it, but your settlements would be pretty unhappy without the essentials. I did notice a lot of what you went over was in fact in a roleplaying aspect. Seriously though, good job. Your video makes me want to jump back on FO4 and join the Minutemen. It's the only faction that really makes the effort to unify the commonwealth and get things going again.

Ha, thanks for even bothering to take a look! You're most likely right about the snap n' build walls, I did use those many times, now that I think of it, I used some from HomeMaker as well. And to be honest, I kind of struggled to keep everything sort of populated, I didn't want only one building and then everything else empty, so I had to sort of think out the layout of the whole thing. I usually write down my ideas on my phone when ever I think of them, so I wouldn't forget what I wanted to build or do. I have no idea what mod uses the grave yards, but I saw them in the misc sections and I thought "Holy shit! I can make a graveyard!" and so I did! haha, you'd be surprised how much I still don't know about the building menu, because the mods add a ton of new stuff! I also usually just "disable" bodies or animal carcasses when they get in the way, sometimes it doesn't work however, if they're marked permanent or what ever... There's a mod, which is called "Commonwealth Journal" or something along those lines, that let's you write stuff into them, like diaries, to-do lists, etc. So I made a section for the settlements, so I could keep track of it in-game, instead of using my phone all the time. I distribute the stuff around, like I said, I don't wanna keep all the eggs in one basket. It's mostly a role play aspect, but it works in practice too. Because since I distribute my stuff around, I no longer have to try to cram everything (storage, farms, military bases, living areas, etc) into one settlement and it would honestly prove difficult to do so, especially in Red Rocket Station. For example, I have a warehouse that is built in the airport, which has no food or water supply, so I just sent a convoy from warvick farm to there and it works. Since I quit playing all the other games and now mostly play this, with the occasional CS GO interruption, I really take the role-play aspect seriously. And I enjoy this, I enjoy building a bunch of useful stuff, that I know is going to have usage, not just mindless settlements for the purpose of "just" doing it. I like to have purpose for everything I build. I'm glad I made you want to get back into the game and I'm glad you enjoyed this!
Snazzishoez Posted October 4, 2016 Posted October 4, 2016 Commonwealth Journal, nice. Going to grab that one. Thanks. I had no idea you could assign people to get stuff for another settlement. Makes sense, I just had no idea. With the Minutemen, there's just so many settlements that need to be established, that it's hard to put your full attention into every single one of them. The first few locations get a lot of love, but then you get exhausted. You said it took you 15 days to make that Red Rocket settlement! Wow. That's some serious dedication. It paid off in the end though. I can't imagine what Sanctuary must look like for you. Walling that place alone is a huge amount of work. Anyways, good video, nice work and thanks for sharing.

I'm actually planning on finishing my sanctuary (it's not done yet, just a commie block, a greenhouse, a trading area, a common area and a mansion. Lmao, took me a week to set it all up. I'll definitely be doing a video on that soon and you can sort of see a sneak peak of my sanctuary in this video. I've also uploaded my warehouse build. It's nothing impressive, but to me, it's perfect. My biggest beef with the settlement system is that the settlers are just beyond retarded. They decide NOT to do stuff you assign them to do AND when you fast travel back in, they're all just wandering about and it takes them a good 15 minutes to get into their places. Besides, you can't really have a huge settlement with only 21 settlers. Assigning them to guard towers alone takes away about 6 of them and then there's farms and other shit I want them to do (sit at computer desks, greet people as they come in, yada yada). I'm actually right now looking for something that livens up my settlements, something along the lines of random NPC's passing through your settlements, to give it a feel of actual stuff going on, like trading and other shit. I know they do have that in right now, but cmon, 3 NPC's and a cow isn't exactly what I call trading. I always imagined that I could build settlements like diamond city.... but, here my dreams are thrown out the window, due to awful engine limitations and badly optimized game.
Benmc20 Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Your project is really interesting, but your video is a bit harsh to watch, at least for me. Your camera moves way too much and gives me a bit of nausea (not really but I think you've get the idea). If you could remake a video without such precepited camera movements, it'll be far better and your project (really nice indeed) will better shown. I'm curious to see what you have done to Sanctuary .
Zor2k13 Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 ^This I was thinking the fps was so bad because you had crammed all that into red rocket and sanctuary was just down the road so some of it was probably trying to render even if you couldn't see it from there. The only thing I can think of for reducing poly count in settlements is for someone to mod all the default pieces to have less polys in each thing and make low poly versions of the mod stuff too. As far as realism goes no matter how high the walls are the enemy spawn points are always inside the settlement and if you are not there it is a dice roll. It should be that if you have a high enough defense number and population number then the settlement doesn't get attacked anymore. I still can't figure out why beth thought it was a great idea to require the player to fix every broken thing in a settlement after an attack. Like the settlers can't do that themselves? Who could survive in the game world waiting on the player to fix up their tato sticks and busted razorgrain?
Guest Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 I agree, the video is a bit harsh and the FPS is terrible. My narration is a bit...off too is the least I could say. This was actually my first ever video on youtube and I wasn't actually planning this through, just decided to record it and give it a go.I could definitelly remake it later on, with maybe an intro, fixed up FPS and hopefully better narration. Maybe I'll need to write a script or something along those lines. There is a way to fix the lag in settlements, but that would require heavy scripting and merging of mods, etc, which I am uncapable of. The least I could do is lower my draw distance and maybe disable shadows. The way to fully disable lag, is to merge all of the placed down items into world space, basically "lock" them down to the actual textures of the world itself. Since bethesda has done that to the rest of the objects to reduce lagg (locked all the little pieces into one big texture). Ofcourse that would render the settlements useless, since you could no longer remove/scrap stuff, only add stuff, however, if I think I have a finished settlement and I think that I'm not planning on removing anything, that would be a great little script (if anyone's down to do something like that). EDIT: Out of curiosity (while trying to improve my videos) I tried to create my own intro, my steps were to create a photoshopped picture and then add an audio clip on top of that. Failed miserably because I know jack shit about photoshop!)
