Zerosleepless Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 Hi I've been modding Skyrim for almost 2 years now , and for me it's always the same charade: The game is absolutely stable and fine until i arrive at a certain level (usually 20) , so i'll spend time troubleshooting and finally give up , reinstall everything , start new game and then it happens all over again. Judging from the considerable amount of issues (mostly random CTD) reported in this forum , i'm starting to think that nobody at all is enjoying a somewhat stable game. And i just feel so tired of losing progress, not knowing the actual cause of the ctds and having to play the game all over again knowing very well that it's gonna start crashing soon enough. Anyways i'm getting ready to wipe out my whole Skyrim install and start all over again , and i would like some questions answered beforehand. *Is it indeed possible to have a somewhat stable game that's heavily modded?or should i just roll with a semi-stable game (mine crashes like every 15 min) *How many mods would you consider safe to add? 50? 100? 200? *Does the number of installed texture mods influence stability? even if they're all optimised to a minimalistic 1k with ordenador? *Wrye bash is asking me to activate "auto-ghosting" what is it and what does it do? *I have a Bashed patch , would it be useful to create also a merged patch with tes5edit? *Do i ABSOLUTELY have to use loot or can i just sort my load order with common sense (to decide what overwrights what) On another note , i'd like to include my load order , maybe someone can help me troubleshoot: GameMode=Skyrim Skyrim.esm=1 Update.esm=1 Dawnguard.esm=1 HearthFires.esm=1 Dragonborn.esm=1 Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Edition Patch.esp=1 Falskaar.esm=1 ApachiiHairFemales.esm=1 ApachiiHairMales.esm=1 ApachiiHair.esm=1 SGHairPackBase.esm=1 EFFCore.esm=1 RSkyrimChildren.esm=1 AzarHair.esm=1 TERAArmors.esm=1 SkyMoMod.esm=1 ClimatesOfTamriel.esm=1 Campfire.esm=1 UnlimitedBookshelves.esp=1 Gray Fox Cowl.esm=1 LegacyoftheDragonborn.esp=1 BCS - dTd Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 I used to have the same issues then I found out that as soon as I received the letter from the Yarl in Falkreath my game would start becoming unstable little by little. it was actually a bug fix mod I had installed for a long long time which adjusted the build times for hearthfire houses when outfitting them through the steward dialog. Once I removed that things became very stable for me. I have 205 active esps and many texture and mesh overwrites and I feel my game is as stable as it is without them installed at all.

The curious thing is that my game started being unstable around the exact same time (after the letter from Falkreath) I'll try to uninstall some stuff to see if there's a clear culprit like in your case.
Avallonkao Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 i dont know if this will help you but help me alot since i did that, remove heartfire with all mods related to it, dont use any sound mods, like AOS or sounds of skyrim, dont use mods that changes cities, like JK and etc, and absolutly dont use anything that changes helgen. and for final, try using safety load, little by little by removing mods like that make my game alot stable, i think its because this mods works better on less modded games, but i have around 275 mods and 180 plugins actually, and i have crash (its skyrim) but its really rare, its mostly when i run around some strange npcs doing strange things since im using the Immersive Citizens. another mod i stopped using a long time ago was the unoficial fixes, they alongside with the Immersive creatures always givme random crashes in wilds. and like i said its solved to me, but try removing some of this heavy mods to check and see, even i missing this mods, i still preffer playing more. ah and the Sound mods, the problem is they have highly incompatibility with alot of Lightning mods, even with paths.

ButchDiavolo Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 As a STEP fan boy, I always follow the step guides when installing Skyrim. I don't follow it completely though, I pick and choose which recommended mods I install. STEP also has a wealth of information/ troubleshooting guides which I find very handy. As a result, my Skyrim is always very stable. I have little to no CTDs. I do get the occassional freezes, but those are usually caused by doing something wild in a heavily populated area. Recently I tried a tes5merged patch, but I couldn't really see/ find the benefit of it. I am not even sure what it does. As for Loot, I generally use it to sort my mods list and then use common sense to adjust the load order. i.e. some mods have to be loaded last, yet Loot puts them somewhere in the middle. Bashed patch should always be the last in the loadorder etc. However... I have noticed that as soon as I start the Civil War quests, my playthrough very swiftly goes to hell. So I generally avoid doing those. Apart from that, I think Skyrim can be very stable to play, but it involves a measure of luck. I have had it happen that with the exact same setup, loadorder etc. I would CTD every 10 mins or so. Yet after reinstalling everything, it was stable as heck up until the Civil War quests. So yah, go figure?

That's a useful list of mods to avoid , i won't include them if i have to completely reinstall skyrim , but i heard that uninstalling stuff mid play-through is asking for trouble , and i'm kinda still hoping to stabilize my current save , do you think it's safe to just remove that many mods? Also I'll be getting rid of the sound mods cause i actually hate them more than vanilla and hearthfire as well cause it's gimmicky , but for JK's skyrim and the unofficial fixes , are you certain that they cause issues? i dont know if this will help you but help me alot since i did that, remove heartfire with all mods related to it, dont use any sound mods, like AOS or sounds of skyrim, dont use mods that changes cities, like JK and etc, and absolutly dont use anything that changes helgen. and for final, try using safety load, little by little by removing mods like that make my game alot stable, i think its because this mods works better on less modded games, but i have around 275 mods and 180 plugins actually, and i have crash (its skyrim) but its really rare, its mostly when i run around some strange npcs doing strange things since im using the Immersive Citizens. another mod i stopped using a long time ago was the unoficial fixes, they alongside with the Immersive creatures always givme random crashes in wilds. and like i said its solved to me, but try removing some of this heavy mods to check and see, even i missing this mods, i still preffer playing more. ah and the Sound mods, the problem is they have highly incompatibility with alot of Lightning mods, even with paths. I agree , safety load used to crash my game when i browse my inventory or sell/buy , and I've learned that other users had the same issues , the memory path was extremely useful but i think maybe it's obsolete as well since we have crash fixes by meh32 As a STEP fan boy, I always follow the step guides when installing Skyrim. I'll also skip on the merged patch since no one seems to know what it's good for and it'd be one less esp to worry about. Thank you all so much
Avallonkao Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 i dont know if this will help you but help me alot since i did that, remove heartfire with all mods related to it, dont use any sound mods, like AOS or sounds of skyrim, dont use mods that changes cities, like JK and etc, and absolutly dont use anything that changes helgen. and for final, try using safety load, little by little by removing mods like that make my game alot stable, i think its because this mods works better on less modded games, but i have around 275 mods and 180 plugins actually, and i have crash (its skyrim) but its really rare, its mostly when i run around some strange npcs doing strange things since im using the Immersive Citizens. another mod i stopped using a long time ago was the unoficial fixes, they alongside with the Immersive creatures always givme random crashes in wilds. and like i said its solved to me, but try removing some of this heavy mods to check and see, even i missing this mods, i still preffer playing more. ah and the Sound mods, the problem is they have highly incompatibility with alot of Lightning mods, even with paths. Mods like the ones i said its not a good thing to remove in middle of gameplay, i advise if you want to try without them start a new game. and if you choose not have heartfire start the vanilla new game version, you will avoid so many problems in your saves. Joe99999 Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 Hi, Here what i find works for me so this is what i would do 1. Remove SAM. It will kill your game. I can run 400 mods but with SAM i cant even run 100. 2. Use crash fixes v12 mod. That is probably the best thing you can do for stability. Make sure to enable the OSAllocators and the heap align thing. Do some reading to figure it out. It looks more difficult than it is and well worth the effort. 3. Get rid of the XPMSE.esp. you can still run the skeleton without the esp (the esp uses a cloaking script) 4. Definitely use a Tes5edit merge patch. Load up all of your mods in Tes5edit (except the bashed patch and anything after it. Once all mods are loaded then r-click and create a tes5edit merged patch. THEN (and this is important, remove the Items leveled list and npc leveled list only in the newly created tes5edit merged patch) Finally, create a Bashed patch after the tes5edit merged patch. So the tes5dit patch fixes any npc data conflicts, and the bashed patch then correctly fixes the leveled list conflicts. Both patches are critical for a stable game. Once way to figure out if your game is stable is to use arthmoors alternate start mod and see if when you start a new game you get the lights bug in racemenu (you need the racemenu mod also) If you can toggle lights but it doesnt do anything then you have an unstable game. Moving racemenu to just below Falskaar usually fixes this. To do that you need to use wrye bash and esm-ify the racemenu esps (so that they behave like esm files. These things i have learned after 4 years of painstaking getting the game stable with 400 mods. A typical game session can last 3 hours straight. Oh and do yourself a favour and avoid any mod by the sands of time team or tonycubed. Those guys are awesome but they cannot make mods that are stable. Good luck.
RenaSan Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 The thing with me and mods is that I usually look at them and think: Oh, nice. That'd be cool to have - but. There's usually a but with me, certain mods just haven't ever made it from my 'oh that's cool' to my 'ah I need that' list. Stuff like guard dialogue overhauls or pretty combat animations. My goal after all is a stable running skyrim, with the focus on being able to play through it. So when I consider a mod only a 'nice' mod, but not an 'essential' mod, it usually doesn't make the cut. This results in a lot of cool mods not being in my game - but I don't miss them much. The thing about having a stable skyrim is having a balanced skyrim. I used to have a skyrim with close to 500 mods installed at one point and it never truly worked, from that I just dumped whatever was just a 'cool' mod and since it's been good. Sure I still run into a problem here or there, but being more selective with my mods has improved the performance a lot. We can't have all the pretty things, that's just a rule that applies everywhere. Gotta sacrifice some things for other things.

Hey Joe (where are you going with that gun in your hand... sorry, couldn't resist), Anyway, could you perhaps explain more about what a tes5merged patch actually does/ what it is for? Is it just to fix npc data conflicts or is there more to it. I have been searching for an explaination, but have never found one. So if you could clarify, it would be much appreciated!
Isenia Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 Also, since no one added it here, you SHOULD learn to use Mod Organizer if you dont already, might take a few days, but man, its the bees knees when it comes to modding, since I use it my skyrim became 1000% more stable, simply because I can swap mods in and out so easily, really worth the effort, also, reinstalling takes about 30 minutes with it, cool stuff. Also what Nerio_ said is very important, only install the stuff you know youre gonna use and see in your playthrough.
spoonsinger Posted August 26, 2016 Posted August 26, 2016 Also, since no one added it here, sometimes just sometimes fucked up textures will bollocks your game, (but usually they just cause a CTD). These are the really shitty things to find if you go on a texture installing frenzy and a particular texture only crops up later in game so you forget that you might of changed one that might be being used in an area.
Zerosleepless Posted August 27, 2016 Author Posted August 27, 2016 So i ended up making my game stable again , I've played 3+ hours and no CTD at all Although i'm not sure what fixed it , cause i changed many things: I replaced SAM with SOS light , removed AOS , Reapers the dark tower and deactivated XPMSE.esp I updated Crash fixes from v11 to v12 , Made a Tes5edit merge patch , remade bashed patch and skyproc patch , reran FNIS And finally i changed ReservedMemorySizeMb to 384 . One of these changes is bound to have helped because my game is once again stable like it was before , so thank you guys so much for the help , otherwise i would have had to reinstall everything
Guest ...failure Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Little off topic, but my story... I can play Skyrim as long as I like without CTD or Freezes, like +6 hours or more. Well I get one CTD once in a while, because of GPU load, like 1 CTD in 20 real life hours of gameplay. And no, I haven't followed STEP or any other video guide, I did what I see good for me. And I'm still using NMM and not planing to jump ship to MO. Anyone can say anything, but, if it works for me, then there's no reason for me to change a thing. So, my last words... If you know what you're doing and do it carefully, nothing goes wrong, in the end you have a stable Skyrim. Have a nice day & please no hate comment drama on my post people.
siskin Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 And no, I haven't followed STEP or any other video guide, I did what I see good for me. If you know what you're doing and do it carefully, nothing goes wrong, in the end you have a stable Skyrim. Precisely. I have 254 esps after merging about 20 into 3 or 4. And I have about 300 packages in MO. I have a full complement of sexlab mods, almost everything except SD+ (never could make that one work right) I have death alternative, defeat, convenient horses, frostfall and some others script heavy mods I can't recall right now. The list goes on of stuff people say can't possibly make for a stable game yet I did it, without even using the creation kit, tes5edit, nifscope or cleaning esps. Skyrim takes about 5 min to launch but after that (assuming I load my games through new game @ alternative start -> spam enter and R to close racemenu -> load desired game) it works like a charm. I have a level 36 archery / conjuration type character and I can play several hours till CTD when I simply have to start skyrim again and keep going. What I did is use MO (it's a must, the way it can virtualize mods is practically a requirement for fixing issues later on), use the LOOT sorting within MO, slap bashed patch at the end, bring select mods that don't work otherwise to the bottom of the load order, fix the mod package order to have a overwrite priority consistent with esp priority and... that's most of it. Start with default skyrim.ini and skyrimpref.ini files and adjust as needed. Also I increased some of the papyrus settings to allow more memory and more processing time to account for the amount of scripts I have but not to absurd values which would bring my rig to it's knees @ fps (don't remember exactly where but a bethesda dev explained the parameters and how increasing too much negatively affects... everything. That was very useful) After that some juggling around to fix issues.

Well i'm glad to hear it's possible , cuz i was starting to think CTDs were a staple in a modded game , i too haven't had a single crash since the posting of this topic , so yay to that As far as MO goes , I do admit it is far superior than NMM as a tool , but I've been working with NMM for sooo long that it's just really comfortable to me to stick with it , i also have no idea what would be the benefits of migrating and if they are worth the time to do it. I've been seeing so many contradictory statements about the papyrus settings , some say changing them is a definite mistake and some others say it alleviates script lag at the cost of fps or something like that , which i'm definitely having cause of weak processor. but still i really can't afford to lose fps (i'm playing at 25 in exteriors , goes down to 20 in crowded towns.) Do you think changing papyrus setting would benefit me? , and if so , to what values?
ButchDiavolo Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 I think Siskin was referring to this page about the papyrus settings. It is what I always use as a reference. As far as adjusting the settings go: if you have no CTDs or other issues with Skyrim, turn off papyrus logging. It is a script hog and will affect your fps. The off setting is 0 (zero) The settings you can more or less "safely" play with are the first 3. But as Siskin said, don't use ridiculous numbers! You can try to set fUpdateBudgetMS to 2.0. The settings most people go crazy with are these: iMinMemoryPageSize=128 iMaxMemoryPageSize=512 iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=76800 I guess people think more memory is better. But again, if you set the values too high, it will cause other problems (stack buffer overflows). Leave the first two as they are. You can try to up the 3rd one to double the value (153600) to see if that helps any. It is a bit of trial and error. Just use very small steps. Read the descriptions of what the settings do and decide for yourself if changing the settings will have any effect.
ButchDiavolo Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Oh... it seems no-one suggested this: download and install Crash Fixes 12. Also read up on the description page for more information and tips to reduce CTDs. Crash Fixes also uses SKSE Plugin Preloader (which, strangely enough, pre-loads SKSE plugins). This has worked wonders for me.

Ah yes , I've already got that one and tweaked it , it is quite amazing , i couldn't even load a new game without it But thank you very much for the consistent help , right now i'm testing various papyrus settings to see witch values are best for me , as you suggested.
ButchDiavolo Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 Another thing to remember: you can't get more out of your computer than what it is capable of. Though it seems your computer should be able to handle a modded Skyrim well, except perhaps the oldish videocard?

siskin Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 I think Siskin was referring to this page about the papyrus settings. It is what I always use as a reference. I got my information ages ago from some obscure topic on the nexus forum, but this page is GOLD. It's going to my bookmarks, thanks. Another thing to remember: you can't get more out of your computer than what it is capable of. Though it seems your computer should be able to handle a modded Skyrim well, except perhaps the oldish videocard? Hah, oldish is the understatement of the year , more like archaic , but one day i'll upgrade and get to play 60 fps with enb , sigh It's very important that you understand the capabilities of your CPU and your GPU, distinctly. Also understand what kind of processing done by the game uses what (CPU or GPU). Let's take extreme cases: Supose you have a REALLY crappy CPU and a state of the art GPU. That means you can go crazy with graphics settings, install 4k textures, mesh improvements, heavy enb, postprocessing, etc, and it won't make a dent in your fps. But if you get frostfall or SD+ or something else that has to do with scripts and calculations other than rendering to screen, your fps will grind to a halt. I used to have a fairly weak platform and did heavy optimisations in papyrus. And the HDR and eye adaptation thing are nullified. it was horrendous and unplayable. I mean seriously, A candle was making every piece of silverware become a sun, in dusk or dawn one side of my character was shades of brown, the other was shades of black. This was back when skyrim was released so admitedly memory is biast and likely exagerates but I cut into the damn thing and made it actually look nice. Eye adaptation feels realistic. Oh and, the interior fog remover is a must, that thing is a absurd fps hog. For reference if you want something to compare to, here are my ini files: P.S. The shadow settings were cut severely to gain fps and looks very crappy in some conditions. That piece of software made skyrim playable for me in the early days of weak pc. Basically it dinamically cuts your resolution down to 75% or 50% when you turn with your mouse resulting in a very significant fps boost. If you're not turning it has no effect leaving a crisp image. The effect of the resolution drop is not very noticeable but the fps gain is high. Aditionally in high load areas if your fps drops crticially low, you can use a hotkey to permanently swap down the game resolution to 50%(only of the world render, not menus leaving the UI crisp) for extra fps.
