That's because the original Doom game was nothing but cardboard cutouts of pixelated bukkake.

 

As for recent that depends on your definition of recent. Doom 2016 was released in well... 2016. About 9 years ago give or take. The ape is merely a parody of this poster:

It was pretty impressive, from a technical standpoint, in its day.

 

"Recent" has a lot to do with how old the speaker or writer is. And also what the subject matter is. And what is it being compared with. Context is king.

I'm not talking about the technical details. I'm talking about the visuals although I'm sure there is a technical aspect to it somewhere. Fighting 2D monsters on a 3D backdrop in the original Doom makes even Pong look good due to the uncanny valleyness of it all. Like I said before cardboard cutouts of pixelated bukkake.
