PC Upgrade thoughts

Heyho,

now with all this new stuff being released I tinker with the idea of upgrading my PC this summer/fall and wanted to get some opinions.

So, my upgrade ideas are

 

MoBo: Gigabyte GA-Z97-HD3 -> ASUS Z170-A (90MB0LS0-M0EAY0)

RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport DIMM Kit 8GB, DDR3-1600 -> Corsair Vengeance LPX DIMM Kit 16GB, DDR4-3000

 

optional: OS drive: Crucial MX100 512GB, SATA -> Samsung SSD SM951-NVMe 256GB, M.2

I then would use the Crucial card as drive for other programs, so the new M.2 card would be reserved solely for the OS.

 

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 v3, 4x 3.40GHz -> Intel Core i7-6700K, 4x 4.00GHz

CPU Cooling: Thermalright Macho 120 Rev. A -> Arctic Liquid Freezer 120

 

GPU: 1x Gainward GeForce GTX 970 Phantom -> 1x MSI GeForce GTX 1070 Aero OC

GPU Cooling: reseller's air cooling -> Arctic Accelero Hybrid III-140

 

optional: PSU: Enermax Revolution X't 530W -> Enermax Platimax 750W

I'm not sure if the additional power is needed, as the DDR4 and GTX 10xx series are more efficient than their precursors.

 

Would this be worth it, or is it too much cost for too less power raise? I suspect the prices to drop until fall but I don't have specs of a comparison system yet, that's why I ask.

Asus and MSI have recently been caught failing to honor warranties and bullshitting for review sites, so I would change those out for gigabyte or evga.

 

evga has the best customer service without question or exception, and it doesn't matter if you get an extra 100 mhz out of that northbridge lane with another SKU, what matters if if you're lucky enough to win the lottery and have your shit explode or damaged during shipping you have a company that actually gives a shit about getting you back on the right track.

also you do NOT want to fuck around with your PSU, and if I were you, I'd be getting a Seasonic.

It wasn't solely for the chip clock why I chose the MSI card but also it was one of the best prices.

 

And what's wrong with Enermax as PSU supplier, I've seen many good critics about them?!

You already have a very good rig! 

Cant you just change the CPU and just the HD? SSD for OS is great, you could even have in a 120gb and save some cash on it (i got one and i never passed 70gb)

The rest seems pretty good to me

Forest for the trees. I'm not citing these as specific examples, I'm saying step back and look at the bigger picture of owning your pc for a while and using the fuck out of it for gaming, and not just buying products simply for performance's own sake, also yeah great price and you aren't ever going to actually hit those benchmarks for that price, because they cherry picked a review card for those specs, like the article says. So again how much are you actually saving long term. Warranty and service cover quite a lot, if you happen to come up unlucky, or say don't get a cherrypicked or exceptionally binned card.

 

As for enermax, again you don't fuck around with PSUs, they go bad and potentially every single thing they touch goes bad, and therefore as the bedrock of your system, and therefore your enjoyment, you go with what is simply the best to get. Enermax has bad batches, emphasis on batches, as in entire shipments with bad fans or poor heat management in particular. Their fan subcontractor is the same one who got OCZ/PCPC run out of business, so you're taking a gamble that's higher in the risk category than normal.

 

Ultimately it's your money and your choice. *shrug*

I'd wait. The new nvidia pascal architecture seems good but I would not buy first gen. Also the new Intel cpu s are coming and if I remember correctly amd as well with zen. Not enough power for the cost imo. I'd wait and see how things change. I do not think zen cpus will change the world but it might affect the market in a good way. If not next intel will be there which should be the better option, not skylake. I'd wait with everything else also, maybe the upgrade for ssd is a good idea.

if your not doing 4k and VR you really don't need that 1070. the 6700k is a good choice but if your not OC ing buy the 6600 K (the i5) then if you do want to OC, you can get it up to a good 4.2 ghz and be stable all day.also if your planning a steady Upgrade (meaning that this wont be the last upgrade ) get a larger PSU to cover any "UPGRADES" ,like SLI or Crossfire, and get a case that will hold anything! Thermaltake core X9.....Its BIG but so Worth it!
