How to increase the number of vertices/faces of a .nif file/mesh

Hello everyone

I want to increase the number of vertices/faces of a (vanilla) body mesh (.nif file) in order to have a more detailed body mesh when editing in Outfit Studio.

I have the .nif file, Blender, Body Slide / Outfit Studio and nifskope but I can't figure it out. How do I increase the number of vertices/faces of a .nif file without breaking it? Any ideas? Help would be very much appreciated.

You will need to export the mesh as an object file or FBX file from Outfit Studio.

Right click on the mesh (in the top right panel) and choose the "Export as" function.

Save the file and open up your 3d rendering program.

Load the OBJ or FBX file into your 3d rendering program and start editing the mesh.

How to with Maya (student license version).

1. Import OBJ.

2. Adjust your view so you can see the mesh clearly (usually it starts out with a wide pan view off of  the right shoulder for me).

3. Figure out if you want to adjust the vertex/face count of the entire mesh or just part of it (Me I'm lazy and just do the whole damn thing cause I'm lazy).

4. With the Vertex/Faces you want to edit highlighted go to the top and click on mesh then choose "Quadrangulate" (this process will turn the tri's into quad).

5. Under Mesh at the top choose "Smooth" (this function will increase the vertex/faces of the selected area).

6. Under Mesh at the top choose "Triangulate" (this process will turned the higher poly quad's into higher poly tri's).

7. Weight Paint (Nightasy's tutorials - abweight lifter using a reference source to copy weights from to the higher poly mesh).

8. Shrink Wrap if you so desire to have the mesh line up better with your reference shape.

9. Save adjustments to mesh then export as a new FBX or OBJ.

10. Import new FBX or OBJ into Outfit Studio, right click the mesh in the upper left panel choose properties and set the texture, material, and other options (note you can look at the properties of the original copy that information into notepad then paste from notepad into the updated meshes properties).

11. Export Nif.

12. Load it in Nifskope and make sure everything looks okay.

13. Test in game...

Hopefully the higher vertex/face/poly version will conform better to your liking... if not then make adjustments until you are satisfied.

Thank you very much for your reply BringtheNoise. I had to adjust some of the steps since I use Blender, but I was able to increase the number of faces of the mesh*. Now I have a new problem: in game the seam between the head and the neck of my model don't match anymore. There is an ugly gap. Additionaly the body looks a little bumpy and has some small stings poking out when moving. Could that have to do with the weight paint? I just used the "Copy Bone Weights" function of Outfit Studio since i didn't really find a Nightasy's tutorial about bone weights.

Any ideas how to make the new body match the head seamlessly?

[* I started out as BringtheNoise suggested but imported the obj file to Blender. I deleted the standard camera, the cube and the lamp. Then I selected the body and clicked on "Subdivide" to increase the number of faces. Exported it as obj and continued as BringtheNoise said.]
