Hello fellow Labbers,

I want to know if there is a way through .ini manipulation or mods to limit the FPS to 30?

Before you show me your Master Race membership cards and tell me how much of a peasant I am, please understand that I run the game on a potato. It manages 60 FPS fine in certain areas and in most others the rate is in between 25-40 FPS. The problem is that these huge swings are very noticeable and cause microstutter, which is imo way more annoying than playing with 30 FPS capped. The fidelity settings don't matter in regards to the swing, since all they seem to do is bring overall FPS down or up, with the stutter-"gap" still present.

My google-fu failed me, so any help is appreciated.

Mine was capped to 30 when I first got it. Not sure why, but I had to unlock it. Anyways, you can try this Add IFPSClamp=30 in the fallout4.ini under the general section. Should be under users/mydocuments/mygames/fallout4/fallout4prefs. If that doesn't work, also left click on the prefs folders, make it read only. Then go to the nvidia control panel & set the refresh rate to application controlled.

If you have enblocal.ini in your skyrim folder, there is a sub-section titled limiter, I think you have to enable it first and then set the cap FPS you want.  I have set mine to 60 a long time ago so I might have my facts screwed up, I'm sure the more knowledgeable will correct me, but as a start maybe you could look into it.  One suggestion I have though is any time you go messing with your .ini files, write down on a piece of paper every change you make, and what values you change.  I have found that some suggested changes work fine, and others not so much.  Not every persons modified game is exactly the same, and some changes could be harmful and you may need to change them back.  A very good reference for optimization for your rig, is (S.T.E.P. .ini settings.) Google wont fail you this time, I promise, good luck.

edit: Ok I'm an idiot.....I just saw this was for FO 4.  Sorry!

Bruce, do you use ENBBoost for FO4? Boris over at ENBdev.com has released a new ENBBoost for FO4, 3.0.7 and it has a built-in FPS limiter.

Best thing you can do disable Shadows, main reason a lot people having microstutter in certain areas.Try this little mod when get updated.  http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1822/?

Thanks, but that's what I found with my google searches and already tried. FPS in-game was still 60 and my character moved super fast. Didn't put it in read-only mode though.

Thanks anyway.

IIRC, the .inis responsible for your graphics settings are created automatically when you start the game for the first time, so you can delete them if you want to reset them (with exception of the *_default.inis). Don't quote me on that though. :)

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into it. Didn't even think about ENBoost, since first thought in regards to ENB is huge performance loss on my machine.

Thanks I check it out.

As I said, the fidelity settings didn't do much. The game looks worse and I get a couple of extra FPS, but the swings are still there. My overall FPS are quite tolerable, but the sudden drops are killing it for me (usually from something around the mid-40 mark down to the lower 30 range).

You can use MSI Afterburner to lock fps in games if you would prefer that. There is also Nvidia Inspector which can lock fps as well.

Thanks again for the help guys. Now I can enjoy FO4 in cinematic 30 FPS mode.

ENBoost did the trick. Seriously though, despite it running on less frames overall the experience is so much better without the constant frame drops and resulting choppiness. I'll also look into the shadowboost thing, since it might help me out in areas where my machine starts struggling even with 30 FPS.

iPresentInterval was the ini setting that was capping my game to 30 the first times I loaded it

EDIT: oh you solved with ENB, sorry I didn't see. I still keep it written, in case you'll want to make an attempt in the future

Yeah, the iPresentInterval together with iClampFPS solution was all I could find on google. As I said before, it didn't cap my FPS and it made my char run in turbo mode. Which was probably more due to the interval thing than the FPSClamp. I guess this only works if your machine can handle 60 FPS without problems, since it apparently unties gameplay from framerate.
