How do I check if an ENB is working as intended?

Recommended Posts

If they don't have the specific driver you are using, then it probably means it's obsolete.

Who knows what obsolete might mean for them, for all we know it could be better for dx9 games. I need a way to back up it

Game not looking as the screenshots showing on the preset download page might not have to do with the ENB preset itself, but may be by other factors such as high quality textures (2k+), lighting mods (ELFX, RLO, etc) and weather mods (Climates of Tamriel, ELFX weathers, etc).

Also keep in mind that some of these very same mods might have the opposite effect on the ENB preset. The author of bleak ENB made a good example of why he considers some of these mods "incompatible"  for his presets (as in they make the preset not look as intended).

Take a look at these screenshots

Also 2 very important things

1) It is said (not sure if probed) that ENB works better with drivers older than v361 (some even say that you need to use 355 or older)

2) IF you happen to change drivers do not perform a "clean install" since this will delete special settings saved in your driver profile (for Skyrim in this case) and you will have to do the settings all over again

If you do not know what i am talking about in this point then you have missed a prerequisite for ENB installation

Skyrimtuner, author of realvision preset, made a very detailed explanantion step by step on how to install and properly set ENB

It also suggest some texture mods, tho since the guide is a bit old, it might be outdated.

Don't know what graphic card you have but ENB itself is very demanding (some presets more than others) so i would suggest you that if you go on "high quality texture mod" hunt do not install anything that is higher than your VRAM

I always use the latest drivers, ENB has always worked completely fine on both my old computer and my new. Seems like most of these people saying "Older is better!" are either running junky setups or have other outdated stuff that don't work well with newer software & drivers.

It'd be easier to identify the issue if say....

We could look at the ENBlocal you have.

Have Screenshots of your Skyrim Directory

Knew what ENB binaries version you had.

Knew what your in game screens looked like.

Had your Skyrim INI's like Skyrimpref.ini

You could use your Print Screen Button,

Then you go to your Windows Paint (on every version of Windows)

Hit Paste

Then save the picture to desktop as a PNG....Then you attach it to your post.

Yes, you can also print screen stuff off the windows screen too.

That's a good suggestion, I knew the ENB look depends on what lightning mod you have but I always make sure to follow exactly what to install. I actually followed instruction on Realvsion page to configure the settings on the gpu and the one in enb text files. I'm not running texture replacer at all, in fact the only one I'm using is the "optimized HD texture" pack.

I will post all that later today since i'm not on my pc at moment. I have a screenshot on my steam account however with northern light ENB

It's just my character but you can clearly see that it looks basically as vanilla. It lacks DOF(which is really noticeable) and many other effects too. It's stable at 60 fps too which is impossible for a demanding ENB like that on my setup

Just made a suggestion that saved messing around with paint.

Thanks I'll try your method since I hate undeleteable paint history

Because of the looks of that screenshot i'd say ENB is running

Just in case, give me this info pls:

- What CPU, graphic card, and system RAM you have

- Wich is the ENB you are trying to run (i think i read 0.279)

- What ENB client did you installed (0.292, 0.303, 0.305, etc)

- Did you set the application settings on the Nvidia control panel (just like realvision tells you)

- Do you have ELFX / CoT installed?

- A screenshot of a landscape

- Your [MEMORY] settings in your local ini

It depends what the preset requires, if a preset says to use 0.272 (which isn't available anymore) using 0.292 or 0.305 should be okay but if you've found one that is asking to use 0.119 which has been kept available then you should use that one as the preset author would have a reason for using that one and the ENB author must have a reason for keeping the older ones available on his site

As they have been developed the lines we have to add/remove/change in enblocal.ini have also changed over time as well

Do older binaries work with newer preset as well? Anyways I tryed everything but poupori, northern light and southern light don't work at all when I use them, since most of the features are not functional somehow

No

You can use a newer client for an old preset, but not the other way around. Ususually the preset creator states witch version is required

And just in case: No, using a newer ENB on an old preset is not necessary a good thing to do. I usually use the same binary that the preset creator suggests.

Yes something is indeed running but only bloom and another effect works

-i7 4790k, gtx 970 g1, 16 gb ram, windows 10

-northern light, southern light, poupouri, insomnia don't work ; unbleak, somber 3 and rudy work with some bugs in somber 3; I tested this with the following  binaries: 0.262, 0.279, 0.305. Some of these ENBs require a binary that is no longer present on enbdev.com

-for client do you mean binary? If so the above is true

-it's the same as suggested by Realvision so I think yes, just to be sure i'll post pictures later

-I do only install them if they are suggested by the author of the preset

-with a particular weather?

-will send it later when I get to my pc

Use the next one after it. But my suggestion to use latest is still there, unless they're saying to use one of the much earlier versions as someone said before. Anything 0.2xx+ should be fine to use latest.

Have you tried seasons of skyrim? One my favorites.

If you give it a try, installation notes given by Anatriax which basically go through what you'd need to do for most ENB's. Usually supposed to be used with a lighting mod like ELFX or RLT and a weather mod like CoT. I'm using an earlier version of CoT, 3.1, as the latest, which I think is 5.something has some issue with ENBs. I don't really remember, but using 3.1 definitely works fine for me.

Next the preset:
Just get the base file, Revision 1a. The data folder update isn't needed, as these features will be covered by other mods.
Spoiler
1) in the downloads folder you opened in the previous step, go back and extract the Seasons of Skyrim archive
2) open the extracted folder, and go to True HDR (Not HD6 Tribute)
3) Open main files, and copy the contents into your Skyrim folder
DO NOT let enblocal.ini overwrite!!! (We will adjust this for your system, specifically)
4) Go back, open the Performance Options folder. I use the one with SSAO-SSIL disabled. It just puts too much strain on my system. Copy it's contents (enbseries.ini) into your Skyrim Folder, and overwrite.

Configuring enblocal.ini:
MOST users won't have to change a lot of the settings here. This is ENBoost, and changing these settings can greatly enhance, or reduce, your performance. Instead of numbered steps, I'm just going to point out key features of interest that I've found have the greatest impact. Other guides are available for configuring this further.

EnableZPrepass=true
This is kind of important. It will increase performance by not rendering shadows you can't see.
ReservedMemorySizeMb=512
256 is default here (if I remember properly) I suggest a minimum of 512, personally I use 768.
VideoMemorySizeMb= xxxx
Method 1: (VRAM + System RAM - 2048)
Method 2: Right click desktop, select screen resolution, look for Advanced Settings, enter the "Total Available Graphics Memory" value.
Results may vary for each method. Some people may perform better under Method 1, while others perform better under Method 2. Test both, to see which gives you the best results.

MaxAnisotropy=4
Not as much as a performance impact as 16, and I really can't see much of a visual difference.
[Antialiasing]
I have all of these set to false. I don't mind a few choppy lines here and there if it increases my performance.

The next step is configuring your video driver to handle certain things.
NVidia:
Spoiler
1) Right click your desktop
2) Select NVIDIA Control Panel
3) In the left pane find "Manage 3D Settings" (It should be the middle selection under the top header of 3D Settings)
4) In the drop down, locate TESV.exe. If it's not there, click Add, and locate your Skyrim directory, then TESV.exe
5) Set the following values:
--Anisotropic filtering = OFF
--Antialiasing - Gamma Correction = OFF
--Texture filtering = High Quality
--Triple Buffering = ON
--Vertical Sync = ON or Adaptive (Half Refresh Rate)
6) Click Apply.
7) If you have an SLI configuration, disable this. Click "Configure Surround,PhysX". Under PhysX settings, select your secondary GPU, then click the box for "Dedicate to PhysX"
8) Close Control Panel

Nope never heard of it, I'll try it later, hope it works but I doubt it will at this point

Made an edit to my post that includes some info that might help when it comes to ENBs.

Should also note, RealVision ENB has some pre-made Skyrim ini's that outline a lot of the features and change some settings that help quite a lot.

"Optimized Ini uGrids 5" is the best to go for.

I also should ask, just in case this got missed somewhere earlier in your installs and such, are you using the Wrapper or Injector version of ENB Series?

And only moving d3d9 and Enbhost?

Yeah I just extract them both in the skyrim directory. I do think however that enbhost is useless to extract since it should be the same for every version(same size, same data modification)

This should install all running previous versions of directx, it wont replace your current version, it'll just add to it.

If you already have it, it'll either say so, or just say the installation is complete without actually doing anything.

I know you asked where to check, but honestly I'm not sure. dxdiag only shows the latest.

Ok, you have a great computer, with that monster graphic card and no aditional texture mods installed i wouldnt be surprised if you are at 60fps constant  (limit) even with ENB working.

Only enbhost.exe is the same, d3d9.dll is different for each binary

And yes, use the binary version next closest to the preset creation if possible. I had lower performance on some presets created with 0.279 while using the 0.305 for example

I do not understand why you say "ENB didnt work. In your screenshot they are clearly working. May be DoF comes in the ENB preset zip as an optional component?

From the ENB presets you mentioned i only tried bleak / unbleak but i did not like them (i was using ELFX and CoT so i was not getting the expected results) and their DoF was "light", only noticeable in exteriors.

I invite you to try Grim and Somber series, Azura and Jyggalag specially. I do not run them my self because they are too demanding for my rig, but with your graphic card it should be really smooth. They have a very noticable DoF so will inmediately tell if they are working.

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50501/?

Just in case, to avoid getting files from other presets i would suggest you to install and use this http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/7804/?

Every single preset creator will tell you NOT to use this, but i have been using it all along with no problems what so ever. Very handy for switching between several presets  with different binaries to try and to compare.

Also you avoid the chance of not deleting an old files from a previous preset you were using.

If you sill think you are not getting the quality of image you see from people presets then its the mods you are lacking.

I suggest you install these 2 in this order

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/607/?  (only main)

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/61995/? (download main fail and then optional 4k textures)

They pretty much cover everysingle texture of the game with high quality ones.

With those installed your screenshots should look better than the ones in the presets :)

From unbleak probably just detailed shadows but i'm not sure if they are included in this preset, so I can't say for sure

Trust me northrn light, southern light, insomnia and poupouri are no working. If I go to the enb menu and uncheck the settings there is no difference not even slight, Only bloom and another setting that I don't remember the name work. The rest is disabled.

Anyways screenshots are coming

Your ENBlocal suggests that your using SweetFX and running your ENB through its DLL via the proxy library?

I'm under the impression that its not your intention to use SweetFX mod but just the Nothern Lights.

You should have EnableProxyLibrary=False

Until you've got your video sorted.
