How do I check if an ENB is working as intended?

Recommended Posts

Your ENBlocal suggests that your using SweetFX and running your ENB through its DLL via the proxy library?

I'm under the impression that its not your intention to use SweetFX mod but just the Nothern Lights.

You should have EnableProxyLibrary=False

Until you've got your video sorted.

Are you sure about that? If I remember well the sweetfx came with northern light itself. I'll try putting it to false to check what will happen

Ok, hold on one second: If you are saying that X ENB preset doesnt work because you launch the game and you see it vanilla-like then ok. You should check if you properly changed the applications settings on your video card driver's control panel and if you installed files / folders of the preset correctly (and that there were no other files from previous tested presets that might conflict)

This is a list of files that preset might have, when removing a preset make sure these are all deleted / not present

But if it is because you are trying to do changes from the ENB preset menu (SHIFT+ENTER) and you do not see any changes when applying new variables then i am not sure if that is a reason to suspect that ENB is not working

Some time ago, when i first installed Realvision ENB, i made some changes to the preset via that menu and saved it (and i could see the changes as i applied new variables).

For some reason that do not understand (i have no knowledge of how ENB works under the hood) i can no longer do that same thing (to that preset or any other). I change ambientlighting or directlighting and i see no changes in my screen,... but the ENB IS THERE.  I do not know if it is a binary thing, a preset thing or what, but it might have to do with some settings either in enblocal or other ini that wont actually show you the changes until you relaunch the game or something.

On the other hand , some suggestions

[MEMORY]
ExpandSystemMemoryX64=true
ReduceSystemMemoryUsage=true
DisableDriverMemoryManager=true --- > FALSE.  Unless you have a valid reason to enable it this always should be false.
from step wiki:

DisableDriverMemoryManager

This was mainly implemented as a fix for AMD video card users; however, it can also be useful for others. The parameter forces the ENBSeries driver libraries to manage video memory resources for cached textures (rather than the video drivers) and will ignore more of the errors reported by the video drivers. When enabled this parameter can cause lower than optimal performance and/or long pauses. If experiencing CTDs even while ENBoost features are enabled, users can try enabling this parameter to see if it resolves (helps to confirm video driver issues); otherwise, it is best to leave it disabled (false).

DisablePreloadToVRAM=false
ReservedMemorySizeMb=512 ----> setting this value too high might cause CTDs since it duplicates this in RAM aswell (coudlnt find boris post about it, sry) If you play hours and you do not have any then great, leave it like that. But If you do have the, try lowering
EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=false
VideoMemorySizeMb=7840 ----> i personally had better performance (more fps) when lowering this to the real VRAM. If you install textures / mods / ENB preset that end up lowering your FPS too much you might want to try 4096 instead
EnableCompression=false
AutodetectVideoMemorySize=false

The values you end up setting on your enblocal.ini (the ones that end up working better for you) should always be the same in ALL your presets
Be mindful tho, that this might change depending the preset

[PROXY]
EnableProxyLibrary=true
InitProxyFunctions=true

Some presets do not use proxy library dll and so the first line might have to be changed to false

It would appear that Northern Lights makes use of SweetFX.

Ok I changed proxylibrary to false and It gave me 0 results

probably both, mine looks like vanilla plus I can't enable/disable effects. I made some adjustments like you suggested in enblocal too and it had no difference

I just tried both north and south light presets. They look good (but kill my machine, cant play with those)

North

South

They do have more files than other presets, careful with that

They do look as intended I believe

Anyways here are some screenshots of my skyrim folder without ENBs installed and my settings in the graphic card panel

Trying to understand your settings to english (or spanish in my case for that matter)

Triple buffer (buffering triplo) is deactivated, when it should be enabled

The rest seems ok, some are set to global but they still match the RealVision guide settings

Just in case: Did you turn off the effects ENB is replacing from the game configuration?

25amez4.png

1. Nexus Mod Manager (NMM) and Wrye Bash users open the Skyrim menu through Steam. Mod Organizer (MO) users run Skyrim Launcher through MO.

2. In the options section, turn off Antialiasing, Anisotropic Filtering, and FXAA. (in the advanced section)

Of course, if ENB is not working then it wont matter what you set on the enblocal.ini

If you ask me there must be a step from the installation process that either was skipped or not done properly.

I apologize if this sounds dumb or i am explaining something you already know and done a thousand times, is just to be sure, ok?

Steps are:

1 - Turn off the effects in Skyrim that ENB will be doing (Antialiasing, Anistropic Filtering, FXAA)

2 - Set the proper application management in your nvidia control panel (as we have been revising and discusing)

3 - Copy enbhost.exe and d3d9.dll from the ENB binary that you are going to use (they are in the Wrapper folder) into the game's main folder (where your TESV.exe is)

4 - Copy all the content of the preset  directly into the game's main folder (NOT the DATA folder). You should see enblocal.ini, enbseries.ini and some *.dlls copied in the same place as your TESV.exe is

5 - Make sure you have these settings

Skyrim.ini:

[Display]
ipresentinterval=1 <--- this combined with EnableVSync=true in enblocal.ini is important to avoid tearing

SkyrimPrefs.ini:

[imagespace]
bDoDepthOfField=1 <--- turn it to 0 if you want crystal clear underwater

[Display]
bFloatPointRenderTarget=1 <--- IMPORTANT! Without this value, ENB is not working correctly!
bTreesReceiveShadows=1
bDrawLandShadows=1
bShadowsOnGrass=1
iMultiSample=0 <--- turning it to 0 is the same as setting Antialiasing to off in skyrimlauncher.
iMaxAnisotropy=1 <--- turning it to 1 is the same as setting Anisotropic Filtering to off in skyrimlauncher.
bFXAAEnabled=0 <--- turn it to 1 if you prefer Skyrim FXAA, but deactivate EdgeAA in enblocal.ini to avoid too strong blur.
fGamma=1.2400 <--- IMPORTANT! This is the in-game brightness RealVision is optimized for! Don't touch the in-game brightness after setting this.

6 - Never execute SkyrimLauncher.exe again.

Sorry for the long post

PS: Why do you have a Directx10 and another "Skyrim" folder in the game's main folder? Check its contents just in case you misplaced something.
PS2: Again, sorry for pointing what it might sound obvious, but since the Northernlights preset's files are in a folder inside another folder  i want to make sure you copied correctly.
This is what you should be copying in the game's main folder (all files and folders)

I see but I followed the guide on realvision page and according to the screenshot here : http://img5.fotos-hochladen.net/uploads/nvidia2wn2uqvk83d.jpg triple bufferng should be set as off

Yes anisotropy, fxaa are set as off as you can see from my ini files.

The configuration parameters from Realvision page are also correct, I manually checked them just now

DirectX10 and skyrim folder were always there if I remember well; skyrim folder contains another istance of skyrimprefs.ini

I think i copyed the right folder but just to be safe i'll upload another screenshot as soon as I can , showcasing the skyrim folder with an ENB installed

Good, i was testing if you were actually reading my posts...

  :lol:

j/k, i was actually comparing with my own settings but I do not recall why i set TB to enabled. May be something i read somewhere else?

In any case, sorry about that !

If you executed every step correctly, copied the ENB files to main directory properly and your Skyrim.ini / Skyrimprefs.ini are set correctly then i have absolutely no idea what could be wrong.

EDIT: Ok, i just read your post on the ENB forums http://enbseries.enbdev.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=4926

If you are using Mod Organizer remember that your ini files are located at ..\Mod Organizer\profiles\<profilename>\  and not in ..\Documents\My Games\Skyrim

Damn I always have the best luck when it comes to these things, I'm almost giving up.

About the MO ini settings, yeah I know about that in fact the one i copyed before are actually the ini files of MO

Do not give up!

Let's do some thinking: If some presets work and others do not then we should disregard anything related to Skyrim itself and focus on the presets

Either some installation step of that preset was skipped or a configuration file for that particular preset is missing, i do not think there is another explanation.

I would think the same but what is missing? I think I followed everything perfectly and also there are more presets that don't work than the ones that work. I tryed 8 presets in total, 5 don't work, 3 do work :\

ENBs that works: unbleak, realvision, rudy, somber 3( with minor glitches)

ENBs that don't work: northern light, southern light, poupouri, insomnia

Posted

Ok, was trying to see if the ones that work / do not work  had something in common, but i can't figure it out

Work:

Unbleak : 0.279, proxy d3d9_sfx.dll, SweetFx

Realvision: 0.279, proxy d3d9_smaa.dll, no SweetFx

Rudy: 0.279 / 0.292 / 0.305, proxy d3d9_SFX.dll, SweetFx

Somber 3: 0.265, no proxy, no SweetFx

Do not work:

Northen Lights: 0.266, proxy d3d9_SFX.dll, SweetFx

Southern Lights: 0.266, proxy d3d9_SFX.dll, SweetFx

Popurri (First Seed and Morning Star): 0.264, proxy d3d9_SFX.dll, SweetFx

Insomnia:  ???, proxy sweetfx_d3d9.dll, SweetFx

Probably has nothing to do but

- Do you have an Antivirus running that might block *.dll ?

- I am not familiar with Win10, have you tried to give administration permits to enbhost.exe?

I am running out of ideas, lol

No I never tryed that but seems that every program already have the privileges in w10.

I would like to add to the list of ENBs not working seasons of skyrim and mistveil ENBs too

Sorry for being annoying, but i must insist on this:

As far as i know ENB should launch automatically when d3d9.dll is placed in the main folder. If i understood you correctly you are seeing ENB menu when launching the game, meaning that the d3d9.dll and enbhost.exe are properly placed, but (aparently) some preset files are not / are missing because you do not see any changes ingame.

Please, do make sure you copied correctly all the files and folders of the preset into the game's main directory in such manner that when opening ...\Skryim\ you will see inside it the enblocal.ini, enbeffect, d3d9_sfx.dll etc etc + enbseries folder + Sweetfx folder and that your antivirus is not blocking access to any dll / files (turn it off for that matter). I can't come out with a better explanation for your problem

Since there is nothing to loose,... Have you tried using injector version? (you need to read the instalation process since i think is slightly different)

Yes I'm able to open the menu just fine, Just to make sure i made some screenshots so you can check of my skyrim folder with poupouri 1st seed installed. I tryed also to disable antivirus and using the injector version, nothing worked unfortunately
