Floods - The Continuation

The floods in Carlisle (UK) have finally abated at last although the ground is totally waterlogged so there could be more to come.

I was evacuated on Saturday night and was not able to return to my flat until Tuesday from the Community Centre. The place was a mess though as I live on the first floor (I think that's the second floor in the US as we have a ground floor here) the damage was not too extensive.

We got electricity back on Friday and broadband was finally reconnected today.

Here's a link to some pictures of what it was like:

The clean up is now underway though parts of the city still look like a third world shanty town until the Council can dispose of everyone's possessions.

This gives some idea what it's like at present. It was much worse yesterday but the Council were working through the night to clear the pavements.

It was certainly an experience and one I'll not forget. I was quite amazing to see how everyone pulled together and helped each other. I'm am rather left with the question as why does it need a disaster to bring out the best in people though.

It's the blitz spirit in us :D

We had the same shit happen in Croatia a few years back. The flood went through farmlands and minefields leaving behind floating landmines and animal corpses. I still remember the sight of about half a city worth of civilians lined up at the riverfronts to sandbag the hell out of them the moment the alarm was raised, so yeah, the comradery feels pretty amazing. Bask in it while you can, you'll be back to "normal" real soon.

Ah, good you survived with no ark!
Carlisle should be now renamed New Venice.

I know that is no joking matter, so have a Honningbrew Mead on me, because as a Reveler would often say "Ha, nothing like fine spirits to help raise your... well, your spirits!" :P

(glug glug glug hic...) thank you Inte :)

TBH I got off very lightly. Walking around and you see all the poor buggers who have lost absolutely everything, it's really heart-rending. Still, we'll get back to normal in time with a bit of hard work.

I'm glad to hear you are ok :) Flooding seems to be getting worse across the UK.

Yes it is unfortunately. We flooded here back in 2005 and it was supposed to be a once in a 200 year event and on that basis they built the flood defences. 10 years later and it was even worse :(

We got flooded out in Hull a few year ago and then again last winter due to big tidal surge. Were told the same thing now the council are saying we may need a new flood barrier.

The problem with flood defences is that although they do work (ours did) there's so much water it just comes over the top. Maybe we just have to accept that it's going to happen and just live with it

That's true. There may be nothing that can be done about larger floods. Apart from maybe buy a house boat

How have you been? Were you affected by the new flooding?

Many thanks for asking. We're okay in Carlisle at the moment, it was Appleby that really copped it again this time.

Thursday night through to Saturday are the real danger times now. The Met Office has already issued an Amber warning and from the forecast it looks like a similar pattern as before with a long horizontal belt of rain that passes slowly over us from end to end, so come the weekend I may be living back at the Community Centre again.

Fingers crossed it'll be okay, but Appleby is almost certain to be under water for the fourth time this month as will a number of other places like Keswick.

Looking bad up there again :(

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you to

Are you okay so far, as it looks like it's hitting your part of the country as well?

36 flood warnings and 106 alerts so far and it's set to rain heavily all night and all day tomorrow, looks like we're in for it again :(

Jeez will the rain ever stop? :(

I'm ok here, had rain but not excessive where I am luckily.

Just holding our breath now as two rivers here are coming to their peak, next hour we'll know. Next storms are due on Wednesday so we're not out of the woods yet in any case.

Manchester, York and Leeds have got flooded badly this time around as well

EDIT: Looks like we made it, though flood warnings are still in place.

Sigh, back on flood alert yet again, storm is heading our way tonight and tomorrow. This is becoming exceedingly tiresome now.

Sorry to hear that :( I hope you are all ok.

Hi Slorm,

I popped into this thread hoping to be read good news from you - glad to hear you got off relatively lightly, but  sorry to hear that the flood danger hasn't abated - hope there isn't a repeat in the new year.

All the best.

We still have 5 alerts but it's subsiding now so we should be okay here for now. The poor buggers in in Scotland got it real bad though, Dumfries was well under water and there's a couple of red alerts as well. Cumbria is on the Scottish border so it's pretty close to us.

Hopefully the worst is over for now though, the next few days aren't looking too bad. I'm away for the new year in (would you believe) Scotland, hopefully a dry bit though.
