Carabosse Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 Apologies if this question is rather strange but I was looking to find out more about the ranks in the Imperial Legion. I came across this:Auxilliary (Regular Legionnaire)Quaestor (Corporal)Praefect (Sergeant)Tribune (Lieutenant)Legate (Colonel)General (General?)The problem is I have absolutely zero clue when it comes to armed forces ranks, past and present.Say I have an Imperial expeditionary force consisting of five personnel. One in charge, a second in command and three regulars (not sure what else to call them). Would it be realistic to make the leader a Praefect, second in command a Quaestor and then the remainder being Auxilliaries?About the task, it is considered routine by all involved but a particular nuisance to the commander. As if being used to run an errand for clerical elements of the Legion. Combat isn't expected but of course they would always be prepared for such an eventuality. Please let me know if the equivalent ranks are wrong or am I assigning unrealistic roles to the real life equivalents. Or if you have any other insights into the structure of the Imperial Legion I'd love to hear.
Kendo 2 Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 http://www.tribunesandtriumphs.org/roman-army/roman-army-ranks.htm From the duties you're describing they would be classed as immunes; Romano esercito who are part of the legion but exempt from things like digging trenches, guard duty, cleaning latrines, etc. Your group could qualify as a contubernium (8-10 man squad) lead by a Decanus (sergeant). 10 contubernium would be a centuria lead by a Centurian (captain). There was no Roman equivalent to a corporal and Decanus was the first promotion rank a regular soldier could get. Note that Legion is a Roman military type meant for a specific purpose. Archers, cavalry, and artillery had their own units that might be attached to provide support for a legion, though not always. No matter the size of a legion, they usually had about 300 horsemen as part of that legion. Who knew my days of lead minatures and war games would pay off?
