I have Windows 7, 64 bit professional and want to upgrade it to Windows 8.1. Can someone tell me if it will affect Skyrim and would I have to reinstall the game if I do that? Thank you.

For all Windows 7, 8, 8.1 users, you can download for Free, the upgrade to the new Windows 10, it's free if you download it within a year from now

Go with Windows 10 for free. It's better than 8.1 and Skyrim (and everything else I've tried for that matter) works flawlessy, just as they did on 7 64 bit.

Thanks for the answer guys. Now, I only need to know do I have to reinstall Skyrim and all/some programs after upgrade? I'm not talking about clean installation, but upgrading present Win7. If I have to reinstall programs and Skyrim, I will rather wait with upgrade :)

Nope, it keeps all your files when you upgrade

I didn't reinstall anything. Although I did remove some afterward because there were newer/better apps built in for a few things.

I did have to run Mod Organizer as administrator one time after the reinstall, figure out the new changes to my touchpad, and run a 10-15 second fix on the Windows Store, but other than that it's been smooth and easy to switch.

I am just waiting for my turn to download Windows 10. They do not allow everyone download it at the same time so it could be any day now. We got it installed that way on a work computer last week. For Skyrim and other games I hope for the best. I am a bit worried for my older games like Neverwinter Nights 1&2.

Check (and anyone else still waiting) windows update history. Mine (and many others) have many failed Windows 10 updates. I waited a while to find out I was one of the first to be able to upgrade, but windows failed to update properly

Do this if that is the case:

I had to download the media program thing and never had an issue downloading/updating. I recommend disabling automatic driver updates once windows 10 is installed (don't do the other things)

Its step 2, skip the rest of the steps

Then update Nvidia drivers manually. Windows 10 doesn't update Nvidia drivers properly.

If you have AMD, they don't tend to be as much of an issue with Windows 10 for most people.

Thanks for this tip. Good to know since I have Nvidia Gforce GPU. :)

No problem. :)

Overall, its like I had Windows 10 the entire time. I have all the same programs, same settings...everything. Even my mod order/list for Skyrim (most important folder on the PC :P) is exactly the same. The update didn't take long either (at least with the media program)...took about an hour...not bad at all. And after that, my PC was as good as it was before.

As far performance on games. I haven't played any games today, so can't say anything about that. But most people say they get a big performance increase.

Vendayn - Tanks again. I heard that new games runs good (great?) on Win 10 but some older ones causing troubles. Well, I'm only playing Skyrim so far, and that's all I need for now. :)

the day after i did my upgrade, i re-installed Fallout 3, a game which has a bad history of OS issues (just check its Steam page and you can see) and it has worked flawlessly so far. i have not seen any issues at all with any of the games i have installed.

Since I was lazy to wait for Win 10, I upgraded my Win 7 t Win 8.1 and guess what.....I have to reinstall all programs and Skyrim :) Well, here we go again... :D

Oh man, that's rough.  Well, at least when you upgrade from 8.1 to 10, you shouldn't have any problems.  That sounds like the problem I had a few months ago; it all started with a new processor and through a series of misfortunes, became a new PC built from scratch.

Forgotten - Thank you. I don't know how this proverb goes in English but I will translate it literally from my language: "Every bad thing produce something good." :) That happened to me when upgrading Win 7 to Win 8.1. At least my Skyrim runs like a charm although none old save is playable. When copied them from backup Save folder, although they are visible in Skyrim /save folder, the game doesn't show them up. Anyhow, 4 hours of lost time gave me very stable Skyrim and much faster and stable Windows :)
