Jack of All Trades Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 Well I finished Final Fantasy IV, I finished replaying Chrono Trigger (Jeezus I forgot how easy it is to grind in that game, took me 20 minutes to get from level 34 to level 50) And Now I finally gave in to my 2D only rule and now I'm finally playing Final Fantasy VII, it's going great so far. Though it is kinda weird going from normal knights, forests, castles, Airships and beauty, and such in the previous Final Fantasy Games to a Dark and Gritty futuristic setting, it's kinda charming though and its a change of scenery, I like it.
Jack of All Trades Posted August 5, 2015 Author Posted August 5, 2015 Wow Final Fantasy IX even has the Original Black Mage on it, I'll definitely check it out when I get the chance Though where Final Fantasy VII I hear nothing but good things about it and how it's one of the best games of all times, I have heard some bad things about VIII I don't know if anything is wrong with the game since I haven't played it yet but I'll try that out as well when I get the chance
afa Posted August 6, 2015 Posted August 6, 2015 You should wait a few years and see if the FF7 remake ever becomes reality...
Jack of All Trades Posted August 6, 2015 Author Posted August 6, 2015 That was actually one of the things that was prohibiting me from even playing Final Fantasy VII but I don't really mind the graphics and the weird character models (Though to be honest the Battle character models actually look pretty nice, I don't know why they didn't just use those XD)
Jack of All Trades Posted August 6, 2015 Author Posted August 6, 2015 lol Yes true, Its not that bad though you get petty used to them after a couple of hours EDIT: Well I beat it, and I'm honestly speechless. The Ending was amazing and the final boss was VERY Intimidating, I didn't have to much problems with him because I was level 66 but still, Anyone who has played this game and has witnessed his Super Nova attack can agree that its terrifying.
ds64 Posted August 9, 2015 Posted August 9, 2015 Oh how can I forgot about this... one of the best RPG of all time, Suikoden 2, right now it's already on PSN.You don't need to play Suikoden 1, but it's better if you play it first, because of the side stories and you can use Suikoden 1 Hero in Suikoden 2.
Jack of All Trades Posted August 10, 2015 Author Posted August 10, 2015 Yeah I might check it out, I have never heard of it before so when I get the chance to play it I might just give it a try By the way, quick update on Final Fantasy 7. The First time I fought the Final Boss it took me about 15 minutes (he cast Super Nova twice lol) and I just barely defeated him, I decided to do it again but this time with the Ultima Blade, At Level 73, Better Materia, and Omnislash and I absolutely destroyed him in under 1 minute, I don't think I've ever defeated a Final Boss that easily before in my life XD That's just the Final Boss though, Emerald Weapon and Ruby Weapon are so much stronger then him that its scary. Honestly the only way I'd be able to defeat him without too much trouble is to get the Knight of the Round Summon Materia, Master it, and then Get one of my characters to 7777 Health so I can do that one thing (Its kinda hard to explain, look it up if you don't know about it) But to do that we are talking at least a 3-4 hours. There are tons of other strategies out there to like the one that involves mime and such, but I'm not too sure about those.
The DarkSlayer Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Don't know on what platform these days it's released but one greatest Turnbased Rpg's released on Sega Dreamcast was Skies of Arcadia rating 10/10. "Console game no thanks." ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Anywho surprised nobody mentioned Golden Sun and Fire Emblem.
Yami X Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 One game that comes to mind that is 2d,Romance and Turn based is Ar tonelico melody of elemia
Loopy06 Posted August 10, 2015 Posted August 10, 2015 Baldur's gate II has plenty of npc mods including romances (some are childish or badly written but there's some pearls if you dig well) and even some erotic/descriptive content. The story is great but the game looks old though. If a good story is enough to meet your needs, Planescape torment has for me the best story I have ever seen in a rpg.
Youwish1 Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Lost odyssey, granted it's not 2D but it is definitely worth playing. Excellent RPG made by mistwalkers. The game is just downright pure RPG, the story is fantastic and the characters are cool. It's what final fantasy 13 should have been in my opinion. It has a fantastic soundtrack composed by Nobuo Uematsu himself loads of action and level variety and a keen sense of wonder. I think it has 4 discs if that's any consolation on what and how much content you can expect. You could probably pick the game up nowadays for around 20 USD. I won't spoil much but this RPG can make you very emotional at times as the narrative is really well done. If you do end up playing it make sure to really watch and immerse yourself in the dream sequences you won't regret it i promise
Killing Joke Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 If we can into WRPG territory then I also recommend Arcanum: of steamworks and magick obscura from Troika, my favorite CRPG studio. It's available for cheap on GOG, great roleplay potential, nicely written.
NickNozownik Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 Maybe Temple of Elemental Evil? It's rather old but I remember that it was quite fun. I never really finished even half of this game so I can't guarantee that it is good.
Killing Joke Posted August 11, 2015 Posted August 11, 2015 It's from Troika too. Great if you're into D&D because it incorporates 3.5 ruleset (I believe it was the first one back then). But it is totally combat oriented, no real story and the like, it's a dungeon crawling game. In a way, it's the antithesis of Arcanum.
Thickthighsmallfeet Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Lunar: Silver Star Harmony - 2D, romance, turn based. I think this hits all the criteria OP and it is even available on PSP. Oh wait, it isn't free. It is pretty cheap though Legend of Heroes: Trails in The Sky - 3D, romance, turn based. One of my favourites. It is a slow burn, it takes a while to setup characters but it has a great "hook" and will leave you wanting the localisation of the 2nd chapter to hurry and finish. PSP/PC Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time - 2D, strategy based combat, romance with many waifu/ending options. Fun fact: The artist's style is very distinct... If you're at all familiar with hentai you may have come across one titled Another Lady Innocence... PSP I'm sure if I think harder I could find some more but right now you have over 100hr of RPG goodness.
