My Horrible Interaction with Steam Support

For those of you that don't know me, I've been a Fallout 3 mod author off and on since shortly after its release.

My computer was compromised last Saturday via a remote desktop app known as Teamviewer. I had been using it for years, but someone hacked in to my online account somehow.  I am a computer science major that focused in security.  I left a hole in my security, but blaming me for this offense would be akin to blaming a home owner who had a front door with a window in it that a burglar smashed in.  I never installed any suspicious programs, gave out my passwords, I use 2 factor authentication where possible, etc.  I hope I'm conveying the precautions I've taken.

They remotely connected to my desktop computer from Bulgaria, then made $4,500 in fraudulent purchases using my PayPal account.

To add insult to injury, they accessed my Steam account and traded all of my collected cards and a few extra copies of games I had. Their value was minuscule compared to what I could have lost, but it's the principle.

Steam refuses to get these items returned to me. The attached image is the long version. Had my bank and PayPal taken this attitude, my wife and I would be $4,500 in the hole.

That's Steam's official policy. If you get hacked, sucks to be you.

That's one of the major reasons why I never have purchased any digital games, yet. I probably will with GOG. With Cyberpunk 2077 when that comes out. But it's not for sure.

I never ever make any purchases through my PC because of those risks. If I do any online transactions, it will be on a laptop that is specific only for paypal accounts and any other type of online transactions. Though,  no matter, no one is remotely safe with the internet and even making online payments. All it takes is your credit card information in the wrong hands through that person's company branch and you're just another victim.

Sorry about what happened. I hope you can recover what you lost.

Heard a lot of bad stuff about steam recently...

For them its about convienience, if it costs em money then they will try everything they can to avoid it...

Would have been different if it was Gabens account...

You should have taken more precautions dude, something like this would have avoided this situation;

- Delete your cookies once a day.  use something like the free version of CCleaner

no cookies, no dodgy paypal stuff :)

- Make sure you don't leave your computer online unattended.  If they'd done this while you were watching, you could have just turned off your PC, or Router.

- If your not using teamviewer... close the process, via task manager.

I don't mean to sound judgy dude, but being a computer scientist myself... well you should know better!!!

If you'd had something like this happen to you at work, you'd have been screwed dude, probably liable... you can never be too careful on the tint-webss :)

You're absolutely right.  I got cocky.  I've taken such precautions now.

But, just to be clear, there is still some responsibility here that is no fault of my own.  I mostly know what I am doing.  Most people do not.  What chance do they have?  My point is, ultimately, Valve's policies need to change.

Of course its not your fault dude, someone tried robbing you :P

I was only pointing out you should be more careful. (Might of came off a little harsh though  )

Lol if you think steams customer support is bad, try microsoft's, most of the time you won't even get a response.

I mean the amount of times I bought games on steam, and they just don't work is silly, and like you show in your particular case getting them to provide any kind of support, for any kind of issue is like sqeezing water from a stone.

So yeah their policies need to change... will they, probably not.

I got also pay pal not directly linked to my bank and its always empty when i wanne purchase something then i put money i need on my pay pal. This way they hack what they want but i have never money for longer then maybe 5-10min on my account.

Limit everything on internet dont fucking register everywhere don't store any personal info on your PC or clouds. I can go on like this what you not should do but i think your old enough and now hopefully wise enough to know be CAREFUL with what you do on internet and all your damn devices hehe. Dont use google facebook or any other social media don't use any clouds.

I'll predict this problem and many more will in near future even getting worse and then to know many have there whole life on internet lol identity theft will be one of those, people get in trouble for.

Fuck steam its not only DRM they dont give fuck about there customers they as so many other company's only want your money.

Glad im slowly abandon steam.

I use zero protection programs only what MS provide in win 8.1 thats all ive in 15years i use windows never been hacked.

But i know what im doing. Even if they hack me there si almost nothing they can get or find and sure no money(back in hiding under my rock ;) )

Go step by step what you have done in past year, you will see somehow you made mistake and they hacked you. They can only hack you if you leave something importend behind for them to hack you, somewhere on the internet. Remote have to be activated through some program that is installed on your computer so you have downloading something that was malware from ssite that was not secure.

Best wishes!

Square Enix costumer service is horrible too. And I'm glad I stopped supporting them years ago.

I doubt Valve will change. Once a company sets their rules, they follow that shit to the core.

all the game companies treat customers like shit : blizzard , uplay ... heh bethesda got their first strike from me for ESO

steam is rly heartless almost as much as blizzard .

i noticed u kinda lost ur temper there in ur conversation with steam ...

[i asked nicely for money beck for a game i bought and they gave me money beck (and i said i didnt like the game ...)]

im not saying u were in the wrong just saying those corporations go out of their way to be asholes to you if u loose it.
