Multiple Beginner Questions

I just installed and started playing/modding Oblivion. I'm having several problems off the bat.

1. Water looks bad

Specifically, my water looks neon colored at long distance and disappears all together up close when I enable reflections. With reflections off, it just looks downright ugly. This is the case whether I'm going with vanilla water or some of the more popular water mods. Not sure what the problem is. I did briefly have installed the Oblivion Graphics Enhancer. No idea if that could be the cause. I am using an ENB but the problem doesn't change when if I disable it.

2. Missing voices on NPC's

At least half of the NPC's are missing their voices. I have that OBSE plugin that auto forces subtitles when a missing voice file occurs. Just sort of installed it on a whim knowing that Oblivion is fairly buggy. Had no idea that it was going to be necessary for half the people I talked to in-game. Is this a common issue? Is there any known fix?

3. Texture Loading

With Skyrim, you just drop textures into your data folder and the game draws from that over the original BSA textures. However, it seems like Oblivion requires something else. Something to do with Archive Invalidation? I tried messing about with this in the Utilities section of Oblivion Mod Manager but I have no idea if I'm doing it correctly. Any clear tutorials on this subject?

Look over this link. It should give you many things you need for Oblivion by one of the main members here that has a great expereince with Oblivion.

I have had issues as well with Oblivion so I know your situation. The above link has massive amounts of good info that might have some useful tips if not to solve your current problem at least possibly other future problems. :). .Good luck

One source from that page

archive invalidate:

Now you need to use either Wrye or OBMM to archive invalidate via Bsa Redirection, or you have Problems with replacers (clothes, armors or Body textures)
You must set "archive invalidate" in the Oblivion modmanager only one time and never again, see http://www.loverslab...ndpost&p=496940
Or you can use Wrye Bash ( I don't use it) http://cs.elderscrol...BSA-redirection

Check your Oblivion.ini if the archive invalidate changes are inside

The Oblivion.ini is in My documents\my games\Oblivion (german: Eigene Dokumente\My Games\Oblivion)  ! NOT the Oblivion_default.ini in your Oblivion game Folder !

This is the guide I've been using. I've followed his suggestions from start to finish, and my Oblivion is so far stable and gorgeous. :D

Just thought I'd pass along what made my experience the best.

Note: I'm an experienced modder. I like to experiment with some mods. I replaced Robert's Female Body in the guide with DMRA, and it's changed a few things around quite a bit.

Ah, I knew there had to be a page like this somewhere. Much thanks. I figured with my extensive modding of Skyrim that Oblivion would be a piece of cake but it's already throwing me off. :0

Also extremely helpful. I haven't really touched much my ini yet. Now I can get cracking on it. I barely have anything beyond unofficial patches installed so my load order is tame at the moment. But it will soon be expanding.

Oh, sweet. It's by the same people who did STEP? This will be quite handy.

OBGE is now called Oblivion Reloaded. http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/45749/?

I like it, fairly simple if you read the read me.

Ah! I see now! I forgot that I had installed the old OBGE! I just went and deleted its plug-ins/shaders/textures and now my water is working properly. Good call. I never would have remembered this had you not just corrected me. Cheers!

EDIT:

I figured out my missing voice files problem. I believe it was just an installation problem. I reinstalled the game in a different folder and then dropped both voice bsa's into my current game and everyone seems to be talking now. Hurray.

Yeah! I've been modding Skyrim for years, and just recently bought the anthology, and both Fallout games for a little bit of nothing. I found good guides for Fallout 3 and New Vegas from the guys at STEP if you're interested, too

Oblivion is a completly different beast. Some of the body mods and names of mods might be similar but the basic game and addons are different. It is an older engine and has been around for a very looooonnnnnngggggg time. So people have been able to mod the "fuck" out of the game.. :D. As a result you might find way more choices and options but at a price of a bit of more work to get some of them working properly. One thing if I remember correctly it has a proper and functional pregnancy option (with real offspring) unlike Skyrim. The children (at least last time I tried) actually looked unique as well unlike Skyrim or even Fallout NV..;). The customization of the bodies is just amazing.

I too have to get back to Oblivion and get a basic setup so I am also watching this thread and adding a few more tidbits to my own Oblivion discovery thread (and sig).

http://www.loverslab.com/topic/47266-oblivion-setup-files/There might be something there as well that you might want to look at. Please feedback on the added info given to you on this tread :).. Info is always useful. Some I might even take and put into my very weak Oblivion section in my Sig.. :)
