Blushus Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 Hello! My computer's really old and it barely runs Skyrim on the lowest setting. I'm planning on updating some parts as soon as I have the money, but for now I was wondering if anyone could recommend some FPS reducing mods? I'd also love to know if ENB and similar mods can be run on old computers and if not, is there any alternative way to smooth out jagged pixels to some degree? Thank you for reading!
Luna_Natsume Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I have a medium range computer, but I still run into similar problems. I have used enb, but it seems to actually make stuttering worse. I have used the fog interior/exterior mod to help, and completely turned off ALL shadows in my game to eliminate as much stutter as possible... but I still get it, especially in first person view when sneaking. I have tag searched all 'performance enhancers' on nexus to search for SOMETHING to help, but nothing seems to do the trick. I mean I COULD lower my screen resolution... but then the game would look so ugly, it would defeat the purpose!
Quemon Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=11421 (Nice graphs, no FPS lost) http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=5195 (Go to the Misc, and download the Performance thing, place it in the same map as TESV.exe) http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=12525 (Doesn't have FPS drop) http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=8043 (Usefull, VERY) Oh, and do not forget to install SKSE. And my 'options (skyrim launcher option menu)' are: -> Advanced: Texture Quality: High Radial Blur Quality: Low Shadow Quality: Medium Decal Quality: Medium (Do not change the rest since that will cost you many fps)
Blushus Posted March 16, 2012 Author Posted March 16, 2012 Oh, thank you so very much Quemon! The mods you linked me to are downloading as we speak, I really can't thank you enough!
Riceball Posted March 16, 2012 Posted March 16, 2012 I will try and write a list of all the performance increasing mods I use, I'm pretty experienced when it comes to squeezing performance out of my old PC using mods, although I have little knowledge when it comes to actual technical stuff. I'll come back once I fix the list.
Riceball Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 My PC Specs: GPU: Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT 512MB Intel Core 2 duo 2GB ram Onboard sound card OS: Windows 7 32bit My FPS: 32-35FPS about 95% of the time. Skyrim Settings Resolution: 1280 x 720 (Resolution DOES matter) Anti-Aliasing: Off FXAA: On (Use this to sharpen the game and it's better than AA performance wise) Anisotropic filtering: Off or x2 (Forced using Nvidia control panel) ENB - enbseries.ini Bloom Setting: 1 (Higher number = Less FPS hit) SSAO: Off DOF: Off Performance Mods: Install in order. 1. TESV Reduced Texture Pack This will be the first mod you must install. 2. Skyrim Performance PLUS Install everything under the Main files. 3. Better Performance - Snow If you still have problems with snowy areas then replace the above mod with this one, assuming you didn't use the optional file disable snow. - Optimizer Textures This is a new tool and I tried it. It seems to work just fine at the cost of visual quality for textures depending on the level of compression used. I used Medium compression and gave me around 2~3FPS Outside. [WARNING] Only use this right before installing the mods that beautify the game like body textures, clothing, waters mods or anything that you want to keep the textures in perfect quality. 4. Colorful Lights - No Shadows - More FPS This mod does MIRACLES for interiors. I can't believe how this mod solved my extremely low FPS inside houses and changed it to a smooth angel like FPS. 5. Interior and Dungeon Fog Remover I cant really say anything bad or really good about this mod because I have not done enough tests if this does help a lot. 6. Revamped Exterior Fog Same opinion with the above. 7. Skyrim configurator Easiest way to edit your skyrimpref.ini. EDIT: Added my ini tweaks and general Skyrim settings using Skyrim configurator Threaded check boxes: All Checked (uncheck if getting FPS problems) Vsynce: Off Enable Mouse Acceleration: Off Object Fade: 7 Item Fade: 4 Actor Fade: 7 Decals: Medium Max particles: 500 (lower means more FPS = lowest acceptable is 250) - I set the values above with game-play in mind. skyrimpref.ini tweak for older video cards. bFloatPointRenderTarget=0 Set to bFloatPointRenderTarget=1
Blushus Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 Thank you so much, Riceball! I'm definitely installing all of these mods, they're exactly what I was looking for! One more question, if you don't mind? I've looked at some ENB mods but I'm not sure my computer can handle them! I think my specs are similar to yours so I was wondering if you could provide some input?

Since I am not really a capable person when it comes to technical stuff, the best thing I do is try it and see if it works. I'm using this and I edited this to my liking. This is an older version of an ENB in the nexus and mine is no way better than the original since I'm a noob when it comes to these tweaking. The point of this is to see if yours can handle ENB. Download test: Edited ENB Extract to the same location as your TESV.exe. Uninstalling is simply deleting all the ENB files.
Blushus Posted March 17, 2012 Author Posted March 17, 2012 I tested all the mods you recommended and my game's definitely running much smoother. I'm experiencing some amount of stutter from your ENB but I'm more than willing to bear with it - everything looks gorgeous! Thank you so, so much for all your help, Riceball!
nekekami Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 i can't seem to find what I'm looking for but maybe someone else will remember what it's called. the file name is...never mind i found it. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=12801 recompresses all the dds files, worked wonders for load times and just overall performance. I think after it finished it had knocked almost 2 gigs off of my textures folder.

[/quote'] I'm so glad that it worked well for you. I'm always trying and finding new performance mods. It's better if you cap your FPS to 30 or 35, this way you will not notice sudden FPS drops/stutter. i can't seem to find what I'm looking for but maybe someone else will remember what it's called. the file name is...never mind i found it. http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=12801 recompresses all the dds files' date=' worked wonders for load times and just overall performance. Xelthax Posted September 26, 2012 Posted September 26, 2012 Riceball, could you reupload your modified ENB please? I have a similar setup to yours, except I own a stronger GFX (9800)
Nastaspro Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Agreed. Btw this ENB is the most friendly fps saver for my shitty pc, idk why: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/23035
quin666 Posted September 27, 2012 Posted September 27, 2012 Mods and ENB made my Skyrim experience a lot better. Lost 10fps with Reimagined ENB but was worth it compare to all millions ENB made my game unplayable. ENB don't cause long load times and never slow down game? This ENB is perfect! Just need tweak settings for more fps. Thanks for mods.
LaEspada Posted September 29, 2012 Posted September 29, 2012 http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/15123 helped me a ton! It had such a great way to increase fps, I would recommend this to anyone with a low-mid range computer.
Th3_d4rk_4rch0n Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Also i have a low-mid pc for now and the best enb that ate less fps in my skyrim was realike enb (search in nexus).Only takes 1-2 fps and improves the quality of the game. The Texture optimizer is very helpful you gain some fps if you have various textures/armors mods in your game, but if you want to keep the char textures maybe backup the folder with those textures to avoid loss in quality in your character...
Luna_Natsume Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 So I have a medium machine myself, 6 cores/10 GB RAM/1.5 TB HD/Radeon HD 7450. I have tried all the 'performance mods' and some help a bit, especially any that removes/lowers blur/fog. My main problem (I think) is I have a nice HUGE widescreen monitor with a resolution of 1920x1080. I know this is the problem, but I can't seem to find a size with the exact same aspect ratio. Every other resolution I have tried makes everything look distorted, blurry, or just plain terrible. Does anyone know exactly what resolutions would have the exact same aspect ratio of my current 1920x1080? Or at least tell me what I am doing wrong, and how to fix it? I know I need a lower resolution, but I am trying to find a happy medium between performance and quality.
Spell Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 1920 : 1080 = X example: 1600 horizontal resolution= 900 vertical 1600 : X = 900 another example- 1280 horizontal res: 1280 : X = 720
Luna_Natsume Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 1600x900 seems like a better option, but for some reason it squishes my screen. My character looks short and fat. This is odd, because it SHOULD be the right size, in fact I have little black sections at the top and bottom of my screen, and if the game just stretched fully to the top and bottom it would be the right size, I am sure of it. So how do I get it to stretch full-size? *Shrug* Logically it should do it by itself when I set the game resolution to 1600x900 right? So why does it add the unecissary empty black sections at the top and bottom of my screen?
Spell Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 Start your CCC and look for "My Digital Flat Panels", select "Properties (Digital Flat Panel)" then check "Enable GPU scaling" and check "Scale image to full panel size" (just available for analog connections if I remember right) I think "Maintain aspect ratio" is probably also possible(maybe the first choice). Just try it
Luna_Natsume Posted October 3, 2012 Posted October 3, 2012 So this is going to sound weird... I don't HAVE CCC. I went to the AMD site, downloaded the latest drivers and it SAID the package has CCC included... whenever I click on the Catalyst icon, it takes me to "AMD Vision Engine Control Center". It has VERY FEW options, mostly dealing with hydra and manual overclocking. I did a search on my own computer for 'CCC' and 'Catalyst' which turned up a bunch of .dll and .msi files, but nothing that could acess the Control Center. When I went to the AMD website, this was the ONLY way I could find to get CCC, but it doesn't actually seem to be installing ANYWHERE on my computer. Isn't that weird?!?
