I just used Jenna Watson's so called "performance booster" and I'm encountering the ironic CTD problem

The Story:

1. Installed Unique Grasses, use Watson's so called "performance booster" bat file.

2. Downloaded a clean save on Nexus, skipped from escaping Helgen to the death of Mirmulnir.

3. With the above esps and esms loaded, I loaded the save, rushed to Balgruuf, skipped their conversation, and used showracemenu to become a beautiful Redguard girl.

4. Rushed to the tundra of Whiterun hold without hiring Lydia, CTD after a minute.

5. Repeated 3 to 4 for N times.

6. Return to 2, loaded without SFO and its plugins. No CTD this time, but

post-125170-0-60421400-1423136168_thumb.jpg

7. Exited the game, load SFO and its plugins. The trees were normal again.

8. Fight and (another word started by the letter f) with Bishop; found his wolf, learned Ro and Wuld from someone suffered from autism.

9. Returned to Whiterun, killed 2 idiots, slept with Bishop in Bannered Mere.

10. Rush to Whiterun wild, CTD.

11. Disable SFO and its plugins.

12. Rush to Whiterun wild, CTD.

13. Load old saves.

14. CTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTDCTD

I'm sure it's caused by Watson's so called "performance booster", cuz I played with no frequent CTD with most of the above mods installed.

And most importantly, only places with plants can bring me CTD, and the so called "performance booster" removes something about plants.

Is there any way to undo the mess caused by the so called "performance booster" ('s bat file)?

ps. I don't mind if I have to start a new save, but in fact it made no difference.

This belongs to the support forum, but anyway I took a quick look on this jenna mod there without reading much it looks like useless crap that can be done better by simple change 1 line in your .ini files.

You should really care more about what you are actually installing first things first to get rid of whatever this crap is:

This is what it does I can only recommend you to open bat files with the editor before using them so you see what they are exactly doing, anyway now I can only hope for you you have a backup of your skyrim since the only thing this "performance booster" does is deleting some of the gras the game is using.

If you use no mod manager or NMM and you have no backup copy paste your data folder somewhere and redownload skyrim so you have the original files again and just paste your backup in again. If you use MO you should be able to just redownload your skyrim since the data folder is not modified, but since I don't use MO not 100% sure.

In short words you have to get back these files since this booster is doing nothing else then deleting gras.

So the only real way to increase performance is the original good ol enb boost this helps a lot as long as you use a 64bit windows otherwise there is no hope for you

Another way to increase stability (not performance) is shesons memory patch here:

1. Download and install SKSE 1.7.1
2. Go to Steam/steamapps/common/Skyrim/Data and see if you have a SKSE folder with an SKSE.ini file inside. If you do, add these values to SKSE.ini:

[General]
ClearInvalidRegistrations=1
[Display]
iTintTextureResolution=2048
[Memory]
defaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768
scrapHeapSizeMB=256

If you don't have an SKSE.ini file create one using the editor and save it as SKSE.ini

If you want a performance increase and are willing to loose some of the beauty of a modded skyrim you can do what this "booster" aimed to by simply change this line in your skyrim.ini in the documents/mygames/skyrim folder

there should be these lines:

[Grass]
iGrassCellRadius=2.0
bAllowCreateGrass=1
bAllowLoadGrass=0
bGrassPointLighting=1
b30GrassVS=1
iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure=8  <-------- Depending on the gras mod you are using don't mess with this or a lot of the gras may not displayed but depends on the mod you use
iMinGrassSize=25               <----------- this here is the denistiy of the gras the higher the value the less gras you have the more you save in performance so by highering this

                                                            value you do exactly what the "booster" aimed for less gras=better performance or you may use a other gras mod then unique gras since

                                                            this gras mod is performance hungry if you want a performance saving gras mod that is still pretty use gras on steroids

Edit: With the use of this "booster" the installation of any gras mod makes no sense since it gets deleted anyway instead of redownloading whole skyrim for these files you could try to install whatever gras mod you like (for performance saving I again recommend gras on steroids) and see if all the files are there again since as said this bat is removing the modded gras you just installed with unique grasses. Just make sure the files are all there again.

Link to comment

Also indeed this he/she seems to be serious about removing gras as a awesome idea this is from the description

This will involve the removal of most of your grass, but will still leave you with an amazingly beautiful landscape.

Sorry, but how on earth can a modder be that retarded and see the removing of gras as a improvement, well just my opinion to this "super awesome genius contribution to mankind"

You could simply change the gras density as described to an astronomical high value and gain pretty much the same without removing game files he/she should at least but a warning on that game files get removed and you should make a backup of them

Edit: I'm really curious about your hardware maybe we here in the forum can give you some hints what you are able to run your skyrim on.

the bat delete those files

so to undo the patch you just have to put that back in data\mesh\landscape\grass

it's the same as the the remove underwater grass mod, but that one replace the nif with a empty one if i remember right (so the game have something to load, even if there's nothing to load)

if the game don't find the nif, it will put a "!" in game

maybe you can't see it because it's under your feets, but it's there

there's some egrass10B.nif too, look like a more verticle version, if the esp is putting some in game, they will be purple in game (because the textures is no longer there)

there's no reason that could cause a ctd

Link to comment

If this uses a .ini it may fool around with the Exterior Cell Buffer and Grid Loading, which is asking for problems with existing save files. Problems of the CTD kind. People should leave those values alone. I'll download the file to see what it is and does and add a edit.

edit: This .bat seems like a bad joke, it deletes a few .nif and .dds files. Except, those are ordinarily stored in a .bsa in the first place, UNLESS, you use one of several pirated versions of Skyrim - or - unless you (or a tool) unpacked all the .bsa files to reduce loading times. This .bat will probably not help you, but it also won't damage your Skyrim installation, given that those nif's and textures should be safely in a .bsa file (unless you play a pirated copy of Skyrim). Unless it places 0kb empty replacements for these files, which I don't see the .bat doing here.

The loading speed reason has always been a hotbed: many pirated copies (older ones mostly) don't handle .bsa files well. While some people genuinely ask for mesh/texture folders to speed up loading, many others do because their pirated copies won't accept mods otherwise. It's why I refuse to release outside of .bsa format. But that's a different discussion.

Just to try, only for confirmation:

1) Make a whole new game. Check for us if that game remains crash free, that usually says enough about savegame incompatibility, whatever the cause may be.

2) Keep in mind that if you actually need a performance boost, your hardware may already be on the verge of struggling with Skyrim, which always means being a little CTD prone.

3) Quote us your .log files, not your load order. If things worked fine before this mod, it's probably not the load order. Logs tell a lot more about what causes what. To enable logging, please add this to the Skyrim.ini (logs are saved in the Logs folder, inside the same folder where Skyrim.ini is found, by default "C:\Users\<Username>\Documents\My Games\Skyrim\" on a windows system):

Thank you all for solving my problem, gonna dig into it in the next few days.

I'm using 32-bit WinXP. It's old I know, but I don't have money to buy a new one.

the big problem with 32 bit windows is that it can only handle up to 4gb ram and skyrim crashes by default at the usage of 3.1gb ram so if you ctd often keep an eye on your ram/vram usage

Thats just wrong not all mods use bsa files besides I doubt anyone uses a pirated skyrim anymore since steam sales given it out for 5 bucks

Screenshot of my data folder that obviously contains these files I really hope steam did not sold my a pirated copy *sarcastic* and I did not unpack them with whatever tool

post-425879-0-07971900-1423148141_thumb.jpg

Download unique grasses it contains no bsa as a lot of the landscape/gras mods

Don't get me wrong just wanted to clarify this since it just sounds so wrong a lot of mods use loose files instead of a bsa

Oh, I wish you should've seen months how that "guide" tries to "improve" performance at the cost of ripping out your Skyrim installation and recommending mods remotely known for "performance"... I'm sure she probably deleted the negative comments questioning her "methods" for PR points.

That person was weird. I remember posting a semi acerbic, semi informative comment on her mod page, only to find my post soon deleted. Then she closed comments outright then a wave of negative comments arrived. Basically none of her """mods""" are reliable. There's a few valuable pieces of work and advice in them but most of it is erroneous or outright dangerous, and if you don't know how to setup your inis and get performance back (which is of course is precisely the reason you'd find her mods) then you need to find yourself a reputable source, like STEP or the FireFreak guides. She clearly isn't one of them.
