Re: Hard dependencies

So, I found a mod I was interested in giving a try, specifically Wear & Tear.

http://www.loverslab.com/topic/41366-finished-sexlab-wear-and-tear-203-03-jan-15/

Trouble is that it's coded with a hard dependency for Hearthfire - yet the hard dependency exists for the sake of a single potion recipe that can be created in your home(s) in hearthfire. It does nothing else with that DLC.

Trouble is, I never use Hearthfire so I disable that DLC by default. As you can imagine , my save files are all built to this particular parameter i.e. there is no Hearthfire. IF I reenable Hearthfire, install the unofficial patch, and then the mod in question (with the hard dependency), will it break my existing saves vis-a-vis graphical settings.

This also assumes that I, as usual, never use the hearthfire DLC despite it now being hypothetically enabled. I would use the mod in question (without using its single potion feature) but would never make use of the DLC - I won't be buying property, constructing anything, adopting, etc.

My fear is that the existing graphical mods I installed will have a stroke if I accidentally wander into a Hearthfire "area" (assuming those exist anyway).

Cheers

Well you could install the mod then load up TES5EDIT and remove the master from the .esp. I have used this before when having a master that was bad in a .esp so I removed it and the mods that used that master stopped crashing on start up. Not sure how it would be for a DLC but it might be the same.

This is not a good suggestion, if you don't know if the mod uses stuff from Hearthfire.
if it does and you remove it, you'll break (parts of) the mod. Every dependencie that follows Heathfire and that is referenced from scripts will break the scripts as it's index is changed.
TL;DR: Can work, but it's more likely to break (parts of) the mod.

So then the end question is - If I install Hearthfire and the unofficial patch for this mod will my saves break since I'm basically introducing a new master file. Or can I get by in this instance because the file being installed is Hearthfire. To my knowledge, the Hearthfire DLC doesn't modify the game world to any degree. It just introduces some new features/options - if I don't use these features then it shouldn't be an issue, right?

Or will graphical mods (such as ELFX, CoT, SMIM, RLO, etc) still have a stroke?

DLCs are rather save to be installed mid game, as this is what they was made for.

Try to imagine Bethesda had to tell all players to start from scratch after installing an DLC. :D

And just to have it mentioned: Heathfire edits the gamewold in the places where it adds the new player homes.

Nothing really drastic and i know of no mod that conflicts with those edits ... except a few very old ones.

it adds adoption as well and due to this edits spouse dialogues, edits a few towns to add adoptable children and other stuff.

So ya, Hearthfire edits quite a few things.

And for ELFX there are modules to make it work with Hearthfire interiors.

if you don't install the Hf support for ELFX, then Hf interiors will just not have ELFX, that's it.
