Confused but Satisfatied

About a week ago my poor Radeon 7970 384bit GPU went to the big gamers PC in the sky.  As mundane as it seems I was sad; it was my very first high end GPU.  I usually regulated myself to discount GPU's (wouldn't go over $200 if I could help it) so the Radeon 7970, when I got it, grossed an outrageous $450.  It was a good investment though and served me well for 3 years so when it finally gave out it almost felt like a household pet had died.  I decided of course that it was time to get a new GPU and that's when I was introduced to the GeForce 750 TI.

 

Now the unfortunate truth was I was looking to SLI two of these together.  Sadly I discovered this variant is incapable so I was a little apprehensive when I bought for the bargain price of $120 (came out like a bandit).  When I finally received it I didn't hesitate, uninstalled the old Catalyst drivers (had a backup Radeon a friend loaned me; couldn't play WoW on medium settings poor thing Dx) and was immediately impressed with GeForce driver support and the incredible heat dissipation of the Windforce heatsink on it which even at High settings Skyrim can't even go above 50 Celcius.  Needless to say I was impressed with how it (even sporting an AMD MOBO which Nvidia products notoriously hate) handled ANYTHING I got and practically laughed in my face when I tried WoW and New Vegas.

 

Only one thing actually stopped me, almost made me get a different GPU and it has me completely stumped me.  Upon putting in the GPU, configuring it properly and resetting Skyrims ENB I decided to give it a go.  I immediately noticed a difference although not a good one.  When playing the game, especially in outdoors, it played just fine.  FPS was a little low for my taste but I accepted that however upon going into cities or places with lots of NPCs my FPS would crash down to 2-4.  It was appalling and considering I play Skyrim mostly I was very disappointed.  Thinking it was because the 750 TI was to under-powered I began a new hunt for perhaps the new 512 bit R9 series for a good price.  Surprisingly after defragging the Skyrim folder with Razer Cortex the game wouldn't load at all so I decided to simply go bare bones, only mods I think were essential and, here's the key, COMPLETELY REMOVED ENB.  A complete reinstall in other words using nothing but TES5Edit, SKSE and a few quality of life mods.

 

So I began the process of trying to find the culprit of my FPS issue on the fresh install and much to my surprised I discovered it was completely gone.  At first I thought it was because it was at medium settings but upon checking it was set to high (fixing to experiment with ultra).  None of the other mods I installed did anything so my only solution seems inescapable; the ENB.  It was about the only thing that was enabling settings that could be detrimental.  

 

My question however is simple; what was causing it?

 

Although ENB can be troubling to use sometimes there are occasions where it does make gameplay more enjoyable, especially with high texture mods (consequently I did have a few HD mods installed so that MIGHT have been the culprit as well).  While I was disappointed on the loss of using an ENB I had to say this; this card makes Skyrim run smoother than it did for my so-called high octane 7970 and my guess is because the CUDA Core system does work a little better, all Nvidia use triple buffering and they play extremely low on the temperature (I'm tempted to overclock if possible).  The only problem though is I cannot figure out what it was that caused the FPS loss.  Was it the ENB or the HD Texture packs.  I have also refrained from using the High Res DLCs so that to might be the culprit.

 

I know its a moot point at this rate (seeing Skyrim plays better than it did with the 7970) but this dilemma is about to burst out of me like an alien.  If the culprit is the ENB it might be a good idea to let people know on LoversLab to avoid using ENB's for a GeForce cards.  I'll admit that my system is using old DDR2 (when its specced for DDR3 2400) and might be getting throttled, however with Skyrim playing like its on a $8000 Alienware machine now that's not feasible.

 

Anyone have any ideas?  Should everyone start refraining from using ENB now?

 

UPDATE:  Tried it at Ultra, High Res DLC and even ran a full stress test (stress test via spawning 70 whiterun guards and picking a fight with them xD).  FPS stays at a constant 35-50 which is a far cry from just 3 NPC's in one spot were causing 3-4 FPS before.  Still not sure what I did to fix the problem but its welcome =D

but when i install texture packs on skyrim my fps doesent move at all i use realvision enb i tried differnet onces went from 55-60fps to 40-50 usin more grahpically pleasing ENBs 

but if your using the same enb then its the texture pack probably or that frsh install did something idk

I'm using a full AMD rig and I experience that exact problem with Day Z. Granted, it's not very powerful to begin with.

I'm the exact opposite.  I won't buy ANYTHING from AMD.  Of course the only NVIDA cards I buy are from one manufacturer, EVGA.  Never had a problem with them or their drivers.  I ONLY install drivers from the EVGA website and NEVER from that GeFuck page.

 

Everyone has a different story, in the end, all that matters is that you are happy with what you paid and what you are seeing.

I was an AMD CPU + nVidia loyalist until AMD completely dropped the ball on their processors. Intel now and not a bit sorry. This fancy graphical BIOS shit is for the birds though, I'll say that.

 

Still an nVidia fanboy though, I've been with them since the original TNT and have owned a card of theirs in almost every generation since then. ATI drivers were crap for so long that I'm still holding a grudge.

 

The OEM drivers mostly work fine greg, I've never had an issue with 'em, and I prefer them so I don't end up with all the bullshit the manufacturers pack on.

Perhaps they are now, but several years ago I had an 8800 burn up thanks to GeFuck.com's general drivers.

EVGA swapped out the card with no mess and no fuss, but I was down for two weeks waiting for the replacement card.  

EVGA is one of the few manufacturers that actually test drivers on their own cards.  EVGA also doesn't bundle anything with the package either.

But then I only update my drivers when I absolutely have to due to a game not working.

 

Like you, I tend to hold a grudge.

I have an EVGA right now myself, GTX760. I didn't even look at the CD that came with it. Straight to the bin and downloaded the nV drivers. No problems here.

 

There are others on my shitlist too. Tyan (mobo caught fire), MSI (mobo random lockups due to faulty VRMs), Gigabyte (even flakier mobos than MSI), Rocketfish (cheap asshattery in the simplest things), etc.

 

Get off my lawn.

Yep, the CD's that come with cards make great coasters and little else.

 

I'm still running a 650Ti.  Get's the job done so far.

 

Now that I think about it, I also had shitty luck with MSI.  After that I've stuck with ASUS ever since for MOBO's.

And I won't buy anything from Rocketfish either....I don't care how cheap it is priced.
