Riften Invaded Dawnstar to Save Me

So I just had the weirdest glitch ever in my game.  Not all that stable to begin with, but basically playable, way to many mods and I have not been good about not uninstalling mods in the middle of a game, etc.  Anyways, was in Windspeak Inn, had just completed the Magoda quest for Vilja's mother, spent the night there and as I was getting ready to leave, a Necromancer Adept bursts into the inn and attacks me!  Of course, everyone in the inn loses their shit and collectively smears the queer all over the place, I never even got a shot in.  That was strange enough, but then immediately after the Necromancer's demise, almost every NPC from Riften barged in, weapons and spells ready for a momentous battle!  I mean, Aerin, Mjoll, Madesi, Haelga, Grelka, the beggars, Vulwulf and Shadr were the ones that I saw before they started filing out the door, but I know there was even more than that.  I mean the friggin inn was jam-packed with NPCs.  And, of course, my game immediately crashed, so I couldn't even get outside to see if they were walking back towards Riften or not.  Also had a similar, but totally different, glitch last night, took Vilja out for dinner at the Bannered Mare and the place was completely empty, I mean we were the only two there.  Just wondering if anyone else has had similar glitches and if so, if they were able to figure out the cause of them.

...had me giggling so hard my bf asked what was up. Soooo... I had to read it to him (he's locked in some intense battle on Mechwarrior) and it got him laughing too (it got him killed bwahaha)! In all seriousness I think you should probably run Savegame script cleaner and see if you might clean out a couple of errant scripts x3 I've never heard of that particular conflict but it sure did sound funny.

On my old pc when i ran too many mods, I'd find many of the Companions hanging out in the Temple of Mara in Riften.

 

I also had Atub from Largashbur hanging out in Fallowstone Cave (she was hanging out on the upper walkway thats a shortcut back to the entrance) on my way back from killing the leader of the giants and getting his hammer for the Daedric quest.

I have had before where I had a mod that added a follower I have never seen her yet or even found her she was suppose to be friendly to everyone as you don't want a follower that just starts attacking people willy nilly without your say so. My player was getting married and just as it began a message popped up fail I was WTH reloaded and tried again and got the fail again so I waited a few and here she had came to the wedding and just started going ape shit shooting at everyone (maybe she was jealous or something) she was essential so no one could kill her and knocking her to her knees which resets most followers back to normal not her. I uninstalled her mod and tried again and the wedding proceeded as planned with no fail. So it might being caused by a mod in your load order or left over scripts hard to say.

Check any mod that could change NPCs' AI, most likely comes from here. I have an issue myself with the Companions in one of my games, everytime I enter Jorrvaskr (or however it's spelled) they all stand still at the entrance and then go back to their sandboxing, except the one who gave me a quest, never move from the hall until quest's done. Realized it comes from enhanced skyrim factions, and your issue, although quite different (but funny) in the outcome looks similar.

I don't have a solution for you but if such a thing should happen again try using the console command "tcai" if you have time to do so before the game crashes. This will turn off the game's combat AI: NPCs wil just stand there looking all angry with weapons drawn and/or spells at the ready but they can't actually use them. It won't solve your problem but it may give you a chance to explore it in-game.
