sieghart113 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Guys i'm not sure if this's even the right place to post but if you can help i'd be really thankful. So I've decided to do a new life in Skyrim (again) after a long while of not playing the game. The problem is I just reinstall it in another folder, deactive all mods since some were conflicting and gave me troubles, and now I lost track of WHAT TO DO... So basically I need some basic helps on modding all over again. The last time i did it things didn't went smoothly. So I have a few questions : 1/ How do you usually do it ? I've heard about BOSS (is it LOOT now ?) or STEP and having no clue what to do with them after checking out their Nexus page. The last time i was modding i didn't even use any of these loading order programs (or they weren't around back then) 2/ What's the most essential, basic mods that help with installing and keeping track of other mods that you'd recommend, and in what order ? Not restricted to mods, I know this time I have to install BOSS, SKSE NFIS and the Unofficial patches at some point, I'm just not sure when. 3/ What's the best way to use NMM ? What kinds mods should be manually installed instead ? In the past i used to shove all mods i can find into NMM and make it do the work, skipping mods that requires manual install or even try to NMM them lol... Obvious that wasn't wise for me to do so. If this is posted in the wrong thread please let me know and i'll paste it elsewhere and ask the mod to delete this one. Thanks for reading.
gvman3670 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 The best way to use NMM? DO NOT USE NMM! It's a junk program. It really is. It leaves your Skyrim folder a mess. Go to STEP and follow their suggestions. Use LOOT for sorting your load order. Switch to using MOD ORGANIZER (so your Skyrim folder won't ever be a mess again and you'll never need to reinstall). And follow some simple steps to setting up a stable, clean, crash-free game right from the start. Read this thread... http://www.loverslab.com/topic/26468-guide-want-a-ctd-free-and-blistering-fast-skyrim-game-here-you-go/ And go here to get started with Mod Organizer (and to get help if you need it)... http://www.loverslab.com/topic/20492-mod-organizer/
nutluck Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 If you want a really nice beginners guide on modding I always suggest going to youtube and looking up Gopher. He has a great beginners series, by the time you are done watching it you will be ready to mod. Use LOOT for sure instead of BOSS. MO is better than NMM but it has a much stepper learning curve IMHO. I would say watch Gophers beginners guide series then watch the MO video's and then make your decisions as you will be much better informed on where you feel comfortable starting.
Hentai-chan Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 How long have you been away exactly? You may want to run TES5Edit with all mods selected once you're done installing all your desired mods. To make sure you're not missing any masters on load priority.
sieghart113 Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 I've been away for a year and a half or so, but back then i didn't get to use BOSS or STEP anyway. I think i got TES5Edit somewhere butt better be checking again. So... for now I should try out the MO for organizing mods, LOOT to load them correctly, then start to installing core mods like SKSE, FNIS and such... right ? Thanks a lot guy, I'll try this next week and see what happens. Could make this thread into a all-in-one modding guide but I guess most of the members around here have what they need for modding already.
gvman3670 Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 The one thread I linked you to will outline the steps to setting up your Skyrim folder so it's squeaky clean and as free of bugs as possible (by cleaning everything with TES5Edit and installing the newest Unofficial Patches). Then, if you use Mod Organizer, that folder will stay in that pristine condition forever simply because MO doesn't actually put anything in it (it uses a virtual /data/ folder system that runs outside of the Skryim folder). The only things you'll need to add to the Skryim folder will be SKSE, ENBs, some HDT files (if you want breast/butt physics and collision), and things of that sort that go in the root directory and not into the /data/ folder (remember that MO becomes your /data/ folder so anything that would go in there goes into MO instead).
...0... Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 Install through steam skyrim and DLC then read or watch some tutorials how to properly install mods. Unofficial patches are must also. Better use SKYRIM HD TEXTURES more efficient en better looking then bethesda HD textures. Use SKSE 1.7 and don't forget to adjust your skse.ini for memory patch. Use TES5EDIT-LOOT-MO If your going ENB make sure you have read and watch tutorials how its best to install mods. If get problems always show your Loadorder so people can help you better just type %appdata% in search go to local and you find your skyrim map there with the loadorder list. Good luck
