Hoppings Posted May 19, 2014 Posted May 19, 2014 As the title says. I'm thinking of making an Assassin/Rogue armor. The softwares I can work with: Maya 2014 Photoshop Nifskope (kind of, will figure it out anyways) I'm just wondering if there is anything I should know before I start creating the mesh. Like, "Start with the femalebody_0!" or "If you use Maya, you will need to lay down the mesh before exporting it." Some guidance on weightpaintin' would be nice, or maybe there is someone out there that maybe can give me a hand. Basically, I can create the mesh and textures for the mesh, but I still need someone to help me with the rest. This kind of topic must have been posted a gazillion times. (Sorry!)

Bushvv00kie Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 I`d suggest you to watch tutorials from this channel: http://www.youtube.com/channel/UCc1uR5cVeo9oQHYnIJDk7fw Some helpful info about nifscoping and weightpainting there. Bad part is that the guy is using 3ds max.
gvman3670 Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 I am JUST starting to use Blender myself. So far I am just going over the basics of meshes and creating simple objects, like sword handles and such. You know, learning all the tools the program has to use. I haven't tried texturing them yet, but I have a bit of learning to do first anyway. I've pretty much figured out Nifskope so that's out of the way. I can import Skyrim meshes/nifs into Blender at this point. And I've managed to find my way around GIMP. Another plus. So it seems that any info you can gather here should be pretty useful to me, too. I hope you can get the answers you need.
blabba Posted May 20, 2014 Posted May 20, 2014 Grab a copy of 3dsMax 2014 because you'll need it to export/import nifs. You can do the manual trick and import .objs into nifskope if you want to directly export from Maya, but then skinning will become hell. Probably easier to just use the Autodesk switcher thing to transfer your work from 3dsMax to Maya and vice versa if needed. Also, when you have specific questions try posting in the tech help forum, you'll get a lot more better and faster responses

You could just go with Blender if you aren't a student, otherwise 3DS Max is going to cost thousands of dollars.

Maya does have its own nif scripts, but they're crude (worse than 3ds max's) and I don't think they're actively being worked on anymore. They tend to be very buggy and cause the program to crash frequently when exporting, iirc. 3ds max 2014 won't cost you a dime, given that you use the student version which is available at Autodesk's website.

Well, I better get 3DS Max then So sad that the UI is completely different. I have studied with Maya now for 6 months and I belive I know most of it.
Bushvv00kie Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 I think you`ll get used to 3ds interface pretty fast, it`s not that complicated. Also check this site: http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/tutorials/category/39-graphic-artistry/ Some helpful info about texture levels.
