Pkatt Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Ol' Polekatt here askin' for advice/suggestions/opinions again! A while back I had a thread where we were talking about what upgrade path I should take. If you want to know all the info, exact system specs, here is that thread- http://www.loverslab.com/topic/28303-advice-what-to-upgrade-next-new-info-new-question-post-37/ So the time is finally here, I'm ready to buy a motherboard / cpu / memory I'm pretty much set on the Intel Core i5-4570 for the processor. I think it is around $199 everywhere I've seen it. What I would like to know is if anyone has any suggestions or opinions on a motherboard to pair with it, and why. Things to consider - I'm not an overclocker. While it sounds nice, and I may try it someday, I normally just put the components in and let them go. But overclocking is not a priority. - priority for me would be reliabilty and stability - Budget would be no more than $200 unless there is a VERY good reason. Prefer much lower, though. But still want a good, reliable board. - leaning heavily toward getting the Z87 chipset. - have seen references to a Z97 chipset coming out this month. Not sure what the difference is, or if I should wait? Soooo, a friend of mine just got an ASUS Maximus Hero, and loves it. But its $199, and I wonder if it is a good reliable buy for me, or is it too much, got stuff I won't really use, and is there something else, better, cheaper, or both, out there? I've muddled through a TON of reviews, but folks here have great opinions so I thought I would ask and see what they are. Other things- - I currently have this cpu cooler, on an AMD chip. But it has adaptors for intel...somewhere. Will it fit the socket 1150? or do I need to buy a new cooler? EDIT: Rereading, I just realize I didn't actually put the link to which cooler I was talking about. (was posting while watching the NFL draft!) Anyway, I have this one http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835118019 bought it years ago, been happy with it, and of course the box says nothing about the latest sockets because they had not been invented yet. But its still being sold I see, and it says it will fit 1155 now, so just wondering if it will still work, even with 1150. - and what about memory? any opinions on that would be welcome too. I'm thinking 2 4G sticks to start with, that would give me 8Gig, and room to grow with the other two slots. thanks!!
...0... Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 Z97 with the new intel refresh haswell processors have better cooling the the ones last your. Intel Devils Canyon and Pentium K launch are going to launch in the week of Computex, June 2nd 2014. The K-Series Haswell Refresh processors in specific are codenamed Devil’s Canyon which have an improved packaging and improved TIM (Thermal Interface). The processors are specifically re-engineered for enhanced performance and overclocking. The Core i7-4790K will be the flagship processor of the Haswell Refresh lineup and the first 22nm consumer CPU to obtain clock frequency of up-to 4 GHz. So the 4790(k OC version) series is alot better then 4770(k oc version) 3770k 3.6ghz standard 4770k 3.5ghz standard 4790k 4.0ghz standard easly OC now with the much improved bios asus and MSI have for example. The Gaming series from ASUS are good motherboards. MSI is also very good but they cost less then ASUS. Socket will be 1150. z97 also support next negeration processors so good investment there. It improves in SDD now get fully support on PCIE M2 slot which give a posible 10gb bandwith and no longer stuck with sata 3 6gb. z97 still don't support ddr4 thats for next generation. Bottem line is if your planning on new motherboard i suggest buy the new generation soon be released its a guarenteed investment for next couple of years. 8gb for RAM is enough for now you can always stick 2 others in there and go 16gb but 16gb is a little bit more on safe side if your modding and future games which will be more and more DX11 and bigger. hope this helps.
Pkatt Posted May 9, 2014 Author Posted May 9, 2014 well just got my new egg morning email and this is in it for $159 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131979&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL050914&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL050914-_-EMC-050914-Index-_-IntelMotherboards-_-13131979-L06D seems like a good price...thoughts? also can get the i5 4670K for $219 but....if I don't overclock, is it worth the extra $20? also several 2x4G memory combos, GSkill Ripjaws and Corsair for $70. A couple of 2x8G deals for $130 and $144 but it is companies I've not heard of. (Adata and Team) I like brands I have heard of. everything above is weekend deals and includes free shipping.
...0... Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 K is only if you wanne OC so extra 20 bucks if you don't OC it's pure waste. Btw my reply about new MB was just suggestion. If you look at what you can spent and what you wanne do i say go for this motherboard it does all what you need to play games in full ultra np. Only if you want cutting edge and extreme plus OC i advice wait for new gen. Your choice and what is cost is verygood. Most of these brands are not bad these days some are little better then others stick with what you know and you can't go wrong GSkill is good brand. If buy this weekend deal you have decent RIG can't go wrong.
Pkatt Posted May 10, 2014 Author Posted May 10, 2014 Thank you, your advice is very appreciated! Working on ordering right now.
nutluck Posted May 11, 2014 Posted May 11, 2014 If you don't want to go with the latest one coming out soon. Then I would personally recommend the MSI Z87 series of board. They tend to be some of the best for the price. I have a ASUS myself and I like it but if I was going to do another build as things stand now I would go MSI Z87 series if I wouldn't wait for the new series to get out for a few months and prices to come down a little.
prideslayer Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 I'm happy with my Intel Z87 board (DZ87KLT75K w/ Xeon E3-1270 v3), other than this newfangled BIOS nonsense. Cheap, fast enough, supports a good amount of memory. Rumor is, it's the last consumer grade motherboard they're going to make. The Xeon is basically an i7-4770 without the onboard video stuff, though the Xeon draws less power and has ECC memory support. It's a bit more expensive than the i7 these days, they were the same price when I bought mine.
...0... Posted May 12, 2014 Posted May 12, 2014 Well new i7 4790k will be standard 4.0ghz-4.4ghz boost. Ordered my new PSU corsair 1200i, so im ready for the new upgrade. Im soon ordering z97 MSI xpower motherboard with 4790k and with the new M.2 express SSD up to 10gb AND MY 2 290X CARDS man i gonne OC the living daylights out of my system. This motherboard also support next 22nm genration unfortunately not the new DDR4 thats for next generation mother boards end of the year. This upgrade normally would not have happen if my current MB not had a broken PCIE 16x slot for my second videocard other wise i would have sticked with my current system. Using one videocard 290x at moment so i need to upgrade or wasted 500euro's for my other card.
