A dark day for a better, faster Skyrim!

Today, I came across this video that featured a memory patch and guide to integrated to Skyrim. The video is about how this patch can be integrated into Skyrim for better performance. I followed every bit of instruction in the video and when I went to run Skyrim, it crashed loading the menu. It was NOT crash on startup, it was a crash loading the menu. I was convinced that the problem was caused by SKSE.  So I noticed there was a discussion page that was linked to Nexus. So I went to the site to if I did anything wrong. It mentioned that need to compile a new "skse_steam_loader.dll". I followed the guide to see an skse_steam_loader.dll was not compiled or it was compiled and I couldn't see it.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is there more that I need? Or is .NET Framework being a total bitch? 'Cause I am having problems with that, too.

Note: I also have the alpha build as recommended by Gopher.

EDIT: My rig falls fairly in line with the recommendations. 8GB RAM, 512MB VRAM (NVIDIA 310M), 64-bit Win7 and I have ENBoost to top it all off.

Use SKSE Beta 1.07, and make an SKSE.ini file with,

[General]

ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

[Memory]

DefaultHeapInitiailAllocMB=756

ScrapHeapSizeMB=256

Place the ini in Skyrim\Data\SKSE.

Using ENBoost (part of the ENB download) can separate V-Ram from the 3.1Gb Skyrim has.

You may want to try this version of the patch.  It is less complication.  No need to re-compile SKSE.

There's mention of the SSME in Gopher's video. (And since I said I followed everything the video to the letter) I already have SSME.

EDIT: Nope. It still doesn't budge. Maybe if I give everything I have it'll be more helpful, yeah?

The Latest ENB (Wrapper Edition)

Use SKSE Beta 1.07, and make an SKSE.ini file with,

[General]

ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

[Memory]

DefaultHeapInitiailAllocMB=756

ScrapHeapSizeMB=256

Tried it with antialiasing and anistropic filtering turned off. Still doesn't budge. Bitch. (Skyrim, not the reader or the commentator)

EDIT3: Correction on the VRAM. Changed it 1GB to 512MB on the OP. Not my fault if NVIDIA gives false info on their product.

SKSE 1.7a with enabled memory fix and SSME do the same. Choose only one.
Safety load does someting similar, so you should choose again. it's only SKSE 1.7, SSME or Safety Load.

You can speed up Skyrim by optimizing your textures and limiting their size (like 2048px), use ENB with or w/o graphic modifications, clean your plugins and DLCs and last but not least: Get rid of loose files and use BSAs.

Posted

By packing up all files (except animations, as else the FNiS generator might throw errors at you) with BSAopt or any other tool that can create BSAs.
Choose max (forced) compession to speed up load times and reduce micro stutter.

Edit: The BSA must have the same name as the plugin file of the mod or it won't be loaded (unless you use MO).

I was looking through my documents when I heard mention of a papyrus log. And I found this error.

Cannot open store for class "_sltns_update", missing file?

[04/08/2014 - 02:32:53PM] Error: Unable to bind script _SL_ChangehornSCRIPT to SuccubusChangeHornsQUEST (63021C79) because their base types do not match

Is it related to problem I'm having?

I am not an expert, but because ssme allocates memory for loading, and I think that should be less than your total 512MB VRAM. Anyway, it is not much effort to try.

I read that ssme checks if another program does the memory allocation, that means that if you use skse 1.6.16 stable ssme will be active and if you use the alpha, the alpha will be active.

I use ssme (d3dx9_42.dll and ssme.ini in skyrim folder) and skse 1.6.16. I have ENB boost. I do not use safety load, I do not need it with ssme.

I removed the memoryblockslog after a short test, but it is probably ok.

As I recall, the memory patch increases the total memory of the first block to 512MB. The first block is the equivalent of my VRAM. Hmmm... I doesn't make much sense but is it possible Skyrim just "cancels out" because it sees there's isn't enough memory for the 2nd block?

Posted

First and second memory blocks have nothing to do with VRAM because they don't contain any models or textures or other resources. It's more like a database that holds descriptions on the objects currently in use in the game process. For ex, if you spawn a bunch of NPC's, you second block usage will grow.

So, do you still crash before the main menu appears? Post your logs from "Documents\My Games\Skyrim\SKSE\" please.

Another cause for this error can be seen as bug report on german forums, where people who pirated the game use the launcher of another language.

if your game is not pirated, check if the string files for your language (Data\Strings) and the translation file (Data\Interface\Translate_{YOUR_LABGUAGE}.txt) is present.

if not, let Steam verify your game files.

As i'm on wits end, this is the only other error i could google up as for me this error only comes up when a plugin misses a dependency.

If you use Windows XP (like I still do... only for gaming, I use linux for everything else), the largest block size you can allocate with SSME (or the other memory block fixes) is 640MB. If you try to set it to 768MB or bigger, it WILL CTD. I keep SSME set for 640MB/256MB for the primary/secondary blocks.

If you have 64-bit Windows, be sure to turn on x64 memory handling in enblocal.ini. The [memory] section should look like this

[MEMORY]

ExpandSystemMemoryX64=true

ReduceSystemMemoryUsage=true

DisableDriverMemoryManager=false

DisablePreloadToVRAM=false

EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks=false

ReservedMemorySizeMb=64

VideoMemorySizeMb=0

EnableCompression=true

AutodetectVideoMemorySize=true

The VideoMemorySizeMb should be 0 with autodetect turned on for card with less than 1GB of ram. If you have more video ram than that, set the (approximate) size and turn off autodetect.

If you use 32-bit Windows, ExpandSystemMemoryX64 should be false.

You don't need SafetyLoad if you're going to use memory block patch.

Otherwise looks good, except the fact that SKSE log ends at reading translation files. Next step would be a save loading.

wait, what's SKSE.log0?

I heard that memory block patch and Safety load both do the same thing but address different problems. Do you think its removal would help somehow?

From what i know, SL and Sheson's do different things to adress the same problem. And Sheson's is better.

I doubt this will help, it's just an apparent things i found in your logs.

Memory management is kindof "interesting" to say with Skyrim. I usually have a QASmoke testcell save game that loads without any issues, and IF i get CTDs when trying to load the actual save, i load the testcell one first(works 99% of the time), and from that the actual savegame.

Worth a try ...

cheers

I was saying in an indirect way that hadn't taken anyone up on their advices just yet until I got a Steam copy. So I posted because I was having a problem. Then my interest shifted to other games. I left Skyrim alone for quite some time. I tested it just a few minutes ago and it still crashes.

I reverted SKSE from 1.7 to 1.06. I have SSME and Memory blocks Log. I removed 3 mods whose .dlls were incompatible with current build of SKSE. And I still get the crash. I am starting to think of uninstalling all my mods and trying to run Memory blocks and SSME with vanilla Skyrim. Then, reinstall all mods. Unless there is another way that is.

*right brow starts twiching, then in enormous frustration he says* I CAN'T EVEN LOAD THE MAIN MENU!!!! *breathes heavily*

EDIT: Tried reducing DefaultHeap size to 512 crashed sooner than before. I guess one might call that progress. Only reverse.  :lol:  Next up increase ScrapHeapSize.

EDIT2: Crashed at the same time as before. Not making any "reverse" progress here.

If you're not misiing any master files, your Skyrim will go at least to main menu. Otherwise, it's something not related to mods.

I am not talking about the load order or missing masters. I bulletproofed the both of that. No, what I am saying is: One the mods I have has some bad blood with the Memory patch and therefore doesn't allow Skyrim to fully load. If it relly were a missing master issue, then it wouldn't even load the logo but that's where it stops. It goes through that BGS thing and tries to load the menu where you can clearly see the Skyrim logo. Then it crashes tryng to load the menu.

My hope is if SSME and Memory patch can run on the Vanilla, then a mod I have is causing problem. If not, SSME or Memory patch doesn't work for me. It's not the first time a mod has worked for a majority of people but not for a single person for any number of reasons.

EDIT: My rig falls fairly in line with the recommendations. 8GB RAM, 512MB VRAM (NVIDIA 310M), 64-bit Win7 and I have ENBoost to top it all off.

Looks like you're playing on a laptop. Mobile graphics are notoriously half the speed and quality of their discrete PCI-E counterparts; they also require that the drivers need to be updated.

If you're using SSME, you don't need Safetyload (can't load both because it'll cause a CTD in any way).

Here's what I used to update an in-law's laptop: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

they also require that the drivers need to be updated.

I assume that means not just the graphics driver. *sighs* It just means more work, doesn't it?

EDIT: No need all the hardware I need to keep games running is updated.

EDIT2: Come to think ot it, I did change master of one of the plugins. It was "TERA Boots HDT". It originally used both .esm and .esp of TERA Armors as master. Seeing it would be a problem, I changed the master to just .esm using TESVEdit. Any off-chance that might have been the problem?

Posted

Fixed it. Turns out the missing piece was getting the all files for SKSE 1.6 build. I'll walk you through what exactly I did since the problem occured.

1) Remove SafetyLoad and other probable unrelated yet still potentially bothersome plugins

2) Revert SKSE 1.7 to 1.6 build (and remember to transfer all files not just ones included in Data :D )

3) Re-integrate both SSME and ENB

And it worked like a charm. Well, perhaps not quite like a charm exactly, but, meh, close enough.  :P  Thanks to everyone for their support and help.
