Guest Posted March 17, 2014 Posted March 17, 2014 I've just migrated to Mod Organizer myself having put it off for months because, well, I don't like change I guess. But after 3 months of fairly sedate modding my install had all but shaken itself to pieces, nothing was working as I knew it should, and nothing was ever going to fix what was fundamentally broken. So reinstall time. But I'm sick to my stomach with knowing that NMM, with the very best will in the world, will ultimately fuck your game up, I'm done with it forever. My take on things so far - when it comes to recovering from a reinstall, NMM is like trying to shuffle your way through a maze blindfolded and with your ankles chained to an axe murderer. MO is Glinda the Good Witch lighting the way ahead with cheery trails of glittery fairy dust by comparison, it's so much more flexible and you have so much more visibility on what's going on. You hear these anecdotes from the odd folk who swear they've never had a problem with NMM in all their many years of modding - I can't help but be suspicious that they're the same group of people who were abducted and anally probed by aliens or claim to have seen Big Foot frying eggs in their kitchen....either their pants are on fire or they're the very luckiest people on earth. So I wonder if maybe it's not just good advice to tell new modders to get on the MO train early, just entirely sidestep the whole bitter NMM learning experience. Basically, sticking with NMM is like going back to an abusive husband, he'll say sorry, might even mean it, but eventually he's going crack you one because his beer's not cold enough. /sort of rant

Crack you one! I do love the analogy, though.
B0ss plz Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 Alrighty then, I will now re-install Skyrim making sure that everything is deleted and no trace is left behind! After that then what should I do? Avoid using NMM right, but what else? Oh, and what mods must I avoid, like as in you guys having conflicts with anything or bad experiences, tell me so I know to stay away.

Avoiding NMM means getting to grips with another manager. Mod Organizer is brilliant, but it's going to take some research. Here and here would be a great place to start, and any of Deathneko11's (Mark Hollis on YT) tutorials are helpful. Keep the number of scripted mods you're running as conservatively low as you can would be my advice, they can bring your game to it's knees fast, so it pays to be fussy about which ones you run with. It's sort of intuitive really, generally the bigger and more complex the mod, the more of an impact it will have on an engine that's already infamously fragile. Anything like those big civil war type overhauls, or mods that add a lot of additional NPCs, or fire off a lot of conditional events, that kind of thing you should be at least a little wary of, so do the research before you pull the trigger, read the comments and pay attention to those who are having problems obviously, rather than the ones blowing smoke up authors asses. Migrating to Mod Organizer is a big step in the right direction to avoiding this in future though, it'll make it a ton easier for you to find your way without it causing carnage.
B0ss plz Posted March 17, 2014 Author Posted March 17, 2014 Thanks a ton b3east1e, I'll start using MO from now on. And thanks to everyone else that has helped out, hopefully for the last time.
