Save Bloat?

How large should my save files be on average. At the beginning the save file is around 6mb later it got to 8mb.

 

If there is save bloat how should I go about preventing it?

8Mbs on a heavily modded game is normal, I'm playing one of the same size...just don't throw garbage into your game because don't care if your saves are 1mb or 10mbs long, then you're screwed.

hmm... Okay, but of the mods in my boss log are there any mods I should probably not have because it can cause too much bloat too fast?

I suspected maybe save bloat was causing my world map CTD but maybe it is a different mod that is causing my world map CTD.

 

I tried to narrow it down but doing so revealed other CTD issues like mod order.

Maybe I am doing it wrong?

 

Am I supposed to uncheck the mod in MO or uncheck the esp plugin? when trying to narrow down the problem.

 

Maybe I missed an .ini setting? so many possibilities...

Do not use the Save cleaner on heavily modded saves. Gives unexpected behavior if you don't know what you are doing.

 

There is a simpler way. Go to your skse folder inside Data and create an skse.ini if not already there.

Then add the following lines:

 

[General]

ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

 

Do not use the default launcher after this. Use the skse loader(which you obviously already do)

 

SKSE will run a cleaner internally and reduce your save size slowly. Just wait in-game, or screw around or whatever. you will see that your save file size keeps decreasing progressively. This method is far more safe and has little to no side-effects. The save cleaner on nexus on the other hand can , for example, resurrect dead NPCs, often as essential (unkillable) enemies. I had a case of a resurrected immortal Sauron from the Isilmeriel collection chasing me all around Blackreach because I ran the save cleaner and somehow resurrected him. Also, the save cleaner is a brutal one time action, and needs to be repeated again and again. The skse method works continuously and keeps the size small.

 

I had a bug that caused my save file to bloat to 100MB+ . This brought to down to 7MB after some hours of gameplay. With this running, my lvl 80+ saves are a little over 15MB. 

 

And for the record this is with 350+ mods running thanks to the magic of WryeBash and TESVEdit.

Impressive.

 

I have the clear invalid registrations enabled. Have for about two months now. Do you know what priority the cleaning runs? I mean does it run on a low priority background thread? I haven't run the cleaner yet, thanks for the warning.

If your save is more than 15 MB, then you got a save bloat. That's what modders told me here when I told them my saves were 125 MB. (a record ? :lol: )

 

How many minutes does it take to save? :)

It was more or less 30 min. and I do believe it was because of an old version of SL_Defeat (it was the only available version at that time but Goubo quickly released a new one I didn't know about) and SL_Random and maybe some others joining the party.

 

Now I check my saves once a week at least.
