ChancellorKremlin Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Read a really interesting article on the beeb this morning: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-26260978 It's a little long, but what really got to me was the guy's attitude, from wealth, to education (or his lack thereof) and his unshakable resilience and determination in the face of mounting adversity. His life is a mix of failure, hilarity and success in equal measure, but its his attitude throughout that shines in doing something so vital for so many people. Please try and keep this discussion strictly off politics. I think what he's doing is remarkable because it is frankly shaming as a species that hundreds of millions of women face problems, develop diseases and die each year because of such a basic human need being improperly attended to, or not at all in some cases. While this is often the case due to poverty, ignorance and certain social norms, even in culturally and religiously conservative states he seems to be making progress. But again, its his attitude that shines. "Nobody dies because of poverty. They die because of ignorance." I really loved his comments about his education and big businesses. If you read that far, you'll get what I mean. Here's a guy whose hand I'd really like to shake. We need more people on this planet like him. Anyway, just thought I'd share.
Guest xthejester Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Just one more reason I'm thankful I wasn't born a woman.
Vancien Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 That was a good read. What an inspirational man. That can teach a lot of people in the world to follow their dreams and not to give up despite all adversity they may face. I like how he never set out to strike riches and his terms of business were very unique. "A butterfly can suck honey from a flower without damaging it." "If you become rich you own an apartment with an extra bedroom - and then you die." There is more to life than material possessions or status quo. I agree, the world certainly needs more people such as this.
Snazzishoez Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 I don't what got you to read it, and I can't believe I did. I have a very sensitive stomach about such things. You're right though. That is an amazing story. Very seldom do you hear of people who will go through so much to just be helpful. Even rarer will you hear of someone brought up with so little and be offered so much and still remain humble. I have to say, that's not an easy thing to do by any means. The amount of difficulty this man faced is more than anyone I personally know has gone through for anything. Seriously, the guy sounds like an angel. We definitely do need a lot more people like him on this planet. I have to admit though, it must be an amazing feeling to do something that means so much for people who can't get such important things done on their own. It shocks me that any part of the world has to deal with such things in these modern times. It's sad really. I wish the very best for this guy and his workers. Hopefully his work will continue successfully for the long run.
Pkatt Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 thank you for sharing, I also agree that the world needs more people with attitudes like this. good article.
Lusty Housecarl Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 The world truly does need more men/women like him. They are a rare kind these days.
Sweatington Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 The world truly does need more men/women like him. They are a rare kind these days. Sorry, don't take this personal or anything, but that qoute is dumb as hell If the world were so full of "people like this" in the old days... Shouldn't we be flying hover cars and taking our daily AIDS/Flu/Cancer pills by now?
Lusty Housecarl Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 Sorry, don't take this personal or anything, but that qoute is dumb as hell If the world were so full of "people like this" in the old days... Shouldn't we be flying hover cars and taking our daily AIDS/Flu/Cancer pills by now? I would imagine the world is the same as always, you have good people and bad people. But then you have the majority that is just normal people. Like you and me. There is always a shortage of good people no matter the age we live in. I for one would consider the man a saint if i lived under the conditions many of the females he helped did.

Sorry, don't take this personal or anything, but that qoute is dumb as hell If the world were so full of "people like this" in the old days... Shouldn't we be flying hover cars and taking our daily AIDS/Flu/Cancer pills by now? Don't take this personal but your quote of her quote is dumb as hell. Did she not make any sense to you by what she stated or did you even bother reading the article? The world "needs more men/women like him" clearly states something it "has not" or "does not" have. So your statement of the condition we would live in should more people like the gentleman in the article exist, is completely ridiculous. In other words. The world needs "nicer", "less rude" people who care about "helping" one another rather than "judging" one another. Rather than quoting them and stating their opinion was stupid instead of actually trying to understand the meaning is a good example of this. The world will always have problems. There will always be bad people in it. We may not have it all figured out, but at least if we try to treat each other better, it will be far less intolerable.
ChancellorKremlin Posted March 4, 2014 Author Posted March 4, 2014 Indeed, the point is if we had more people like him, maybe we would have flying cars, a cure to HIV and cancer and no human poverty. But we don't, which is exactly why we need more people like him, as Lusty Housecarl said.
Guest xthejester Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 We will always have human poverty, disease, and suffering. We'll also eventually get flying cars though too. Only the poor people will have to look up from their diseased hovels to see them scooting by overhead.
Nonsense667 Posted March 4, 2014 Posted March 4, 2014 "Nobody dies because of poverty. They die because of ignorance." Heh. I clicked the link and read it before reading the rest of your post. It turns out, I was going to quote the same thing. "I know no human being died because of poverty - everything happens because of ignorance." :'| And if anything, the article shows that both genders suffer from ignorance. As it always is.

I like what he said in this sentence. ================================================================================================================== He believes that big business is parasitic, like a mosquito, whereas he prefers the lighter touch, like that of a butterfly. "A butterfly can suck honey from the flower without damaging it," he says. ================================================================================================================== Good there stil people like this on the planet all tho effect is minimal im affraid. Capitalism is destroying this planet.
