Tux Gaming: Skyrim version/mods recommendation for limited hardware resources

Hi there, I started playing on Oldrim and added some mods, but before I commit more time into the game I would like to ask which version is the recommended one for a limited resources computer.

 

Currently I'm on an Steam Deck, but I wanted advice that is also helpful for others with similar hardware restrictions:
CPU: about i7 3770 power
GPU: about GTX 1050 or RX 550 power
RAM: 8-12 GB RAM (It is 16GB shared on the SteamDeck, but I'm not sure how much of it is taken for the GPU, since Comparable GPUs are 4GB VRAM).

 

Steam OS is arch-based, but any tips regarding to Linux setup is welcome (I may move my Aging Desktop to Bazzite or other good-defaults-for-proton-and-gpu-support)

 

So far I managed running MO2 on both LE and SE, although SE is giving several headaches (Starting by the need of Steamdeck=0 parameter to make it detect keyboard/mouse correctly).

I used https://github.com/Furglitch/modorganizer2-linux-installer (6.0.6, which was still bash-based) to install MO2, and it more or less work flawlessly except the nxm:// linking which I still need to decipher how it works exactly so I can check how to fix it.

 

I'm also interested in trying to replicate what I had long long ago in Oblivion with Lovers with PK (Base from the awesome back in the day guide , Summonable Succubus, Succubus Sword, Slaves Alley with the 100% chamaleon mask hidden there, and probably some more I'm forgetting about ^^u) and maybe the thrilling combat Deadly Reflexes Oblivion mod added to Skyrim, but didn't find any mod that improved combat like DR, specially on First Person.

 

 

Last but not least I saw several threads related to the Steam deck issues (eg, https://www.loverslab.com/topic/216192-guide-skyrim-se-on-steam-deck-how-to-and-obscure-fixes/#comment-6849241), but they seem a bit old and didn't want to necro them, as well as I think a broad target audience will enrich everyone who wants to delve into Penguin territory for gaming :), also the mod "Kronos" mentioned by woodsman30 sounds interesting for LE.

TLDR: Advice for choosing Skyrim version on Limited Hardware PC for Linux and recommended fixes/mods, NSFW mods recommended from people that enjoyed LoversWithPK mods and Deadly Reflexes, all config/mods recommendations welcome.

If you say OldRim, do you mean the original release which had no DLCs? I purchased that on CDs. Not Steam.

If so check to see if the original Mod Organizer (not MO2) has a Linux installer, for OldRim and LE it will allow you load archives (BSA) without a corresponding plugin.

Why MO2 ditched this feature never ceases to amaze me.

 

I no longer dabble with Linux, so that's the limits of my advice.

Thanks for the fast answer, sadly I meant the Legendary Version of the game with the DLCs included from Steam, albeit it would be fun to try "rescuing" that OldRim from steam using https://github.com/SteamRE/DepotDownloader or applying a fix to the DVD version (It required Steam as far as I can tell).

 

I knew that someone was trying to migrate MO2 to Linux, they called it Fluorine Manager (Nexus), and there is a more standalone approach for Linux I just found while answering this called Linux Mod Organizer (Nexus), did anyone tried any of these tools?

Last but not least I see you are specialized on FO4 modding, so far it has given the most headaches on Linux, not sure if it is because it is the GOG GOTY pre-NG version, but the game refuses to see the DLL for the Extended Dialogue Interface (Or at least thats the message I get when I try any dialogue in-game) and all Proton versions I tried so far end up giving "green" artifacts when the camera moves, tried some VSync values but to no avail.

The way i understand it, LE is the least resource heavy for your usecase, wich is relevant, as your constraints are quite tight. Vramr is probably a must, unless you're sticking with vanilla visuals. Overall, its not too bad, most adult mods content wise arent too resource heavy, but you will have to be very picky abour followers, armor and visuals, Authors love to pack those 4k textures, and those are a no-go. Vramr them all, hard. And id avoid SMP physics, those are are performance hogs.
